Big, epic songs under 5 minutes.
« on: October 17, 2022, 10:55:49 AM »
Songs that cover a lot of ground in a short time without feeling rushed.  Here are a few that have given me this impression:

Umphrey's McGee- Glory
Marillion- Slainte Mhath
Dream Theater- Eve (ok, so 5:10 for the pedants)

I could prob think more about this over the next day or so, but this is off the top of my head right now.  Those of you with deeper catalogs can do better, I'm sure!

There's no question as to the answer to this:

The Beatles, A Day In The Life.  Yes, the CD track is 5:33 or something, but the final chord strikes at 4:21 and the fade goes for about 45 seconds or so, then there's the "runout band".

The Beach Boys, Good Vibrations.   3:40 of big, epic, prog goodness.

Dream Theater- Eve (ok, so 5:10 for the pedants)

I'm always struck by stuff like this.  Are you looking for songs "under 5 minutes" or not and, if not, how far over is ok?

If you're just going for close:

- Fates Warning - Fata Morgana
- Fates Warning - Static Acts
- Fates Warning - Outside Looking In
- Fates Warning - Into the Black
- Rush - No One at the Bridge
- Rush - Cinderella Man
- Rush - Tom Sawyer
- Rush - Limelight

That's enough for now.

I second the Neue Regal nomination.

Considering it’s only an intro, I feel like Premonition by Haken feels very epic at only 4:10

If you allow me 7 seconds too much, at 5:07 Kill Devil Hill by Bruce Dickinson feels very grandiose and epic even without the endless repetitions his main band accustomed us to.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

I'll add Rush - Witch Hunt to the other Rush songs already mentioned.

And if op grants me 4 extra seconds, i'll say Symphony X - Eve of Seduction!

There is a lot of choices outside prog music too!

Breathe, The Great Gig In The Sky and Hey You, all by Pink Floyd. Could also throw in Any Colour You Like, Brain Damage and Eclipse (Eclipse would be my vote for the most epic song ever written with the shortest run time, clocking in at 2:12).

Queen - Who Wants To Live Forever (depending on which version, it's 5:10, 4:55 or 4:00)
CSNY - Country Girl (5:12)
Genesis - Cul-de Sac (5:05)

Dream Theater- Eve (ok, so 5:10 for the pedants)

I'm always struck by stuff like this.  Are you looking for songs "under 5 minutes" or not and, if not, how far over is ok?

The title was cut off.  It should read "Big, epic songs under 5 minutes and 11 seconds".

So my example Country Girl by CSNY still doesn't count?  :'(

I was worried it would be over, but serendipity prevails and it's just 7 seconds under.  When you finish it feels like it was several minutes longer, in a great way.  From the opening keyboard chords, the slow buildup, to the cascading walls of noise by the end, it's a pocket-sized epic.
