I saw that the Lord of the Rings movies are on Netflix and decided to re-watch them.  I don't think I've watched them in 10-15 years.

If you get the director's cuts, it might TAKE you 10-15 years to watch them (and that's not a critique; I loved those movies and thought them to be a magnificent piece of art).

I used to have The Two Towers and Return of the King box sets, but I think I sold them off years ago, since I didn't think I'd care to watch the deleted scenes or a 4 hour movie again.  They are definitely cool though.

I didn't get to finish all of the Best Picture nominees before Oscars Night, but I did finally see Everything Everywhere All At Once yesterday morning, and I'm glad that I did.  What an incredible film, and very deserving of all the awards it won last night.

I also caught Luther: The Fallen Sun over the weekend.  Idris Elba delivers.  Obviously, if you're not a fan of the show, there is not much reason to watch the film, but it you are, this is probably bleaker than any of the individual seasons (which is saying something), and Andy Serkis is pretty great as the villain.  Great continuation of the show, and the end definitely leaves room for an interesting continuation of the story.

Have you seen the trash that’s put on the streaming platforms?

I mean, it’s 2023, I can literally buy “Tammy and the T-Rex” on 4K Ultra High Def

A Paramount Harrison Ford/Liam Neeson title out of print AND unavailable to stream on ANY platform in the US? Highly sus.
Not sure what you want me to say.  There's a bigger audience for Tammy and the T-Rex than there is for K-19.

I don't usually care about when celebrities when awards, or how moved they are, but damn look at Ke Huy Qwan greet Harrison Ford on stage last night after Best Picture is announced. And then when Ford offers him the Oscar, he says "Nope, it goes to that guy..." I am all smiles watching that.

Also saw EEAAO at the weekend. Just great. Tempted to watch it again soon.

I've loved all the Luther stuff so will def watch that.

Top Gun: Maverick

Wow, it was as good as people said!  Not just a good sequel, but a good movie in its own right.  I was impressed.

Old, directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Mr. Shyamalan gets a bad rap, and after watching this movie, I’d say he deserves it. Awful. Poorly acted, incomprehensible plot, and the most unnatural dialogue I’ve ever heard. It reminded me of Birdemic but with a bigger budget.

Triangle of Sadness is nuts. I think this is a film that would give Stadler an aneurism. I've read some criticism of it as strictly being anti 1% but I think that misses the point considerably. It doesn't make a lot of subtle points but it explores class, power dynamics, and human nature quite effectively. It's directed really well and the characters are interesting and engaging. I really dug this movie.

Ok, so I'm 80% into this movie and I had to shut it off when the guy tried to kill the donkey.

Up until then, I was like WTF is happening in this movie??  It is very disturbing.  I don't think I can finish it.

Yea, that was a rough scene. It's not what I would consider very disturbing, but I'm a Lars Von Trier fan. It is a weird movie though, for sure. Not for everyone.

Disturbing may not be the right word.  But I think a lot of people wouldn't enjoy the thought of rolling around in a lake of shit and vomit to be very much fun.

It kind of reminded me of the cherries scenes from The Witches of Eastwick.  LoL

It also makes the case for the adage, "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

Oh it totally makes that case. Which is cool since it shift the blame away from a certain class of people to the power itself and shows that it's all about the position, not the person.

I actually found myself laughing a lot during the scene you're talking about haha. It was just so absurd and over the top, and the mixture of it happening with the staff remaining 100% calm and professional was hilarious.

Wind River (2017) Lizzie & Jeremy Renner

Based on a true story; the rape/murder of a Native American girl on a reservation is investigated and leads to ugliness. Renner is the central figure and is great. Movie concludes with some depressing stats about how these girls are often victims of uninvestigated crimes.

We watched Wind River a couple of years ago and we really enjoyed it. I thought it inspired Longmire but maybe I am thinking of something else.

We just got done with You People with Jonah Hill and Eddie Murphy.  It's similar to Look's who's coming for dinner. Very thought provoking.

Went to a theater for the first time in many months.  Saw a "sneak peak" of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.  It was just ok.  It was 2:14, and I kinda think it could have been a really good 1:45 movie.  WAY too much back story told in flashback at the beginning, and a couple places where things just ground to a stop as part of an unnecessary narrative.  Definitely worth seeing when it comes to a streaming service (or if you REALLY want to go to a theater).

Wind River is a nice little movie, but Longmire definitely predates it.

Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River are three movies treated as a somewhat unofficial trilogy. All written by Taylor Sheridan with the last one also directed by him. They are 3 different but great movies which I love watching and rewatching.

I agree - not great but we had a lot of fun with it. There was a lot of subtle dialog that we thought was hilarious. But I think the movie was made with other intent in mind.

My wife watched it, and I was in and out doing other things.  Nothing I saw on the screen made me want to stop and keep watching (and I like Eddie Murphy).  Some of it - granted, probably out of context - made me want to keep doing the other things I was doing (then again, I don't really care for Jonah Hill).

Now, Neighbors; I walked in on my wife watching that, and couldn't leave the room.  But that's Zac Efron (and Dave Franco), so what can you do?

Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. I wanted it to be AT LEAST entertaining, but nope, bad and boring. A shame, the concept is nuts.
Been rewatching some Spielberg too, Close Encounters is a masterpiece imo, but The Adventures of TinTin is really under-appreciated!

Money Shot: The PornHub Story

An interesting documentary on Netflix on the rise and non-fall of PornHub.  Lots of interesting stuff, some of which I knew about, lots that I didn't.  If you don't mind the subject matter, I recommend it.  No explicit sex is shown, if that worries you, but there is a decent amount of nudity.

Last year I got a membership to the local art house cinema; they show a nice mixture of foreign films and documentaries, but also many of the more popular films which do well in the major awards. My favorites since I got the membership: The Eternal Daughter, Tar, Memoria, The Banshees of Inisherin, Living, Official Competition, Crimes of the Future, and Decision to Leave. Most recently, I really enjoyed The Quiet Girl, which is the only movie I've ever seen in Gaelic. I'm usually wary of films about children, but this was really well done.

Yeah. This movie was unbelievably bad.

I think I'm going to rewatch Murder Mystery and then the sequel (not that I recall the first was as being particularly profound such that I really NEED to rewatch the first one).
