It's my #1 movie of all time and I adore both actors.

Top Gun, the original.   I started calling it "gay porn" by the end.  I was never really that big a fan of the movie, and it didn't really hold up for me on rewatching it.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

Wow, I'm a sucker for bonkers movies and this thing was completely bonkers. Probably need a few more watches to fully absorb and get past all of the bonkers-ness.

So, yeah, I absolutely loved it.

Watched the Netflix re-make of 'All is Quiet on the Western Front' last night with my middle son. What a depressing F'n movie   :(   I get that it's a war movie and all and those types of movies aren't sunshine and rainbows but man....very depressing. It was 'good' and well done but jeez.....

Violent Night.

It's a bit like Die Hard, if the bunch of bandits would take hostage a rich family in their big mansion, and if Bruce Willis was the literal Santa Claus who goes yippie kippie kay on the entire squad of bad guys.

It's a stupid movie of course, but it's the kind of stupid that is done right. Once you accept the silly premise (a Bad Santa-esque Santa Claus, played by David Harbor, finds himself in a mansion being stormed by a commando taking hostage the rich family), the internal logic of the movie holds and you get to see Santa going berserk on a bunch of bad guys  :metal

My wife and I watched the Glass Onion last night. It was OK. I still really enjoy Daniel Craig in this role but I think Ana De Armas really made the last movie pop. It's definitely a fun ride and worth watching though.

Where Eagles Dare (1963)

Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood embark on one of those lost cause suicide missions that make for great movies. It certainly wasn't Guns of Navarone, but very good nonetheless. Some of the action sequences were a bit too over-the-top for a 60s war movie, and in all honesty the mission itself was pretty silly in a Mission Impossible sort of way. An over complicated way of accomplishing something where the tried and true rubber hose approach probably would have sufficed.

It had two things going for it, though, which really elevated it. First, it did a wonderful job of concealing what the real mission actually was, as well as whose side the mission commander was truly on. He spent time on both sides and the movie made sure to keep you guessing. Nice twist in what would have been an otherwise straight ahead movie. The other thing was the score. It was incredibly British with its wonderfully overstated heroism. Wonderful for the film. It had me captivated before the opening credits were even finished. Overall it was a good flick.  :tup

I used to watch a lot of war movies with my dad.  He was into history and especially war for some reason.  When we watched Where Eagles Dare, I said it felt like an Alistair MacLean story, and it turns out I was right.  Alistair MacLean also wrote The Guns of Navarone and Force 10 from Navarone (among others).

Anyway, I pretty much agree.  It was overly complicated seemingly just to be overly complicated, but it was fun to watch.

I didn't realize the connection with the writer. Same sort of story as Navarone, but very different movie.

I didn't think the movie was overly complicated. I thought it was just enough so to not be straight-forward (like Navarone). In GoN there was never any question what was going on. In WED there's a suspense aspect as you're just not sure what Burton was really up to. Even when the big reveal comes you can't be sure he's being truthful (he wasn't). I like that. What was overly complicated was the actual mission. It was a tremendously dangerous for five good people to get some information they surely could have obtained elsewhere. Nobody in their right mind would try something like that.

Nope, Piece of Mind is from 1983.

The other thing was the score. It was incredibly British with its wonderfully overstated heroism.

It occurred to me last night that Harris probably wrote the thing not because of the story or the film but rather because of the music. It's the score that really inspires you. There's a reason it was their intro music for the World Piece Tour.

Saw that last week as well Tim.

We 1st watched Banshees of Inisherin.  My God, what a gut punch to the stomach kind of movie.  So well written but so damn dark.

Now into Bullet Train. So far, it's a blast.

Silent Night Deadly Night 4: Initiation (1990) - The fourth entry in the killer Santa series decides to get rid of the killer Santa. In it's place is a pretty generic story about witchcraft that doesn't really tie into Christmas at all. It's a step up from the dull part 3 and it has some Screaming Mad George FX near the end but still wasn't a fan of this one.

Silent Night Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker (1991) - The oddest adaptation of Pinocchio I've ever seen. Not a spoiler by the way as one of the characters names is literally Joe Petto. It's a movie that comes alive in the 3rd act. The last 20-30 minutes are so insane that if the first two acts were like that I would totally recommend the movie. Instead you have to watch 2/3s of a pretty bland movie before you get to the "good" stuff. Also has several actors from part 4 playing characters with the same name but they are not the same characters. Which is an odd and confusing decision.

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) - The only normal Christmas movie I watched this year....and I watched it on the 30th. Not much to say here its a really good version of A Christmas Carol with the Muppets and Michael Caine acting his ass off. I've just seen so many versions of the story that even the really good ones don't really excite me all that much anymore.

The Great Muppet Caper (1981) - The last movie got me in a Muppet mood. Really my only complaints is that the movie leans a bit too much on breaking the fourth wall and the 3rd act is a bit wobbly from a plot standpoint. The movie has enough laughs to cover any flaws it may have though.

Nope

Pretty good, though like most monster movies it's better when you only catch small glimpses of the monster. The mystery of what it is is way more scary and interesting than the reality of it.

I liked ‘Nope’ but don’t think it earned the level of revere it garnered. The unique nature of the UFO aspect was creative but outside of that the rest of the elements of thr movie were just average IMO

Re-watched Rambo the other night. Only the second time I'd seen it. I noticed something that went under most people's radar that significantly changes the tenor of the film. I certainly didn't catch it the first time. We all know that Sheriff Teasel was a general asshole who started the sequence of events. His motivations were probably alright, nobody really wants drifters in their town, but he was frankly a dick about it. He was never a sadist, though. That was his deputy Galt, who died a deservingly gruesome death. He just didn't like Rambo. Something about him pissed him off. After the escape he certainly wanted to recapture him for professional reasons, and avenging Galt was also a motivation, but there was something deeper than that going on. His resentment towards Trautman made that clear. Then I noticed something in the background that sheds a whole lot more light into what's going on in Teasel's noggin.

This is the only time you see this angle, and it only lasts a second, but behind him is an Army distinguished service cross, a purple heart (with I think an oak leaf cluster device), and a silver star. Silver stars don't grow on trees, you really have to earn the things, and the distinguished service cross is second only to the congressional medal of honor in recognizing badassery. Teasel is a war hero by pretty much any definition.

I noticed but it didn't really click that Teasel gets pissed off every time somebody mentions Rambo's war record. He picked up his hardware in Korea, which is called the forgotten war for a reason. Everybody loves a WWII vet or a Vietnam vet, the latter for being particularly dumped on, but nobody really thinks about the Korean vets. I think this is the root of Teasel's problems all along. He's resentful as all get-out of the recognition Rambo gets in contrast to the general disregard for his own highly distinguished service. Knowing this makes the film a whole lot more meaningful, I think. If Teasel is just a general asshole cop the whole movie's rather 1 dimensional. Providing him some motivation adds another layer to it.

Better movie than I recalled.

I think that's a great analysis, and certainly adds some dimension to the character.  I guess I'm wondering why they chose to downplay it.  This is literally blink-and-you'll-miss-it level of obscurity, even though obviously it's a detail that was intentionally included.

I'd rather have an antagonist with real motivations, not just a bad guy "because he's an asshole".  Sure, a lot of people just want clear good guys and bad guys, but why not give something to people who'd like a little more?

Two questions before I comment:  Why assume these are Teasle's medals (as opposed to his father, grandfather, uncle, etc.)?  Why assume that the medals were earned in Korea?  We obviously don't know Teasle's age, but the actor who played him, Brian Dennehy, was just shy of his 12th birthday when the Korean War started and just shy of 15 when it ended.  Dennehy was a Marine from 1958-63 and famously lied about having served in Vietnam (a lie which he finally admitted in 1999).

I think it's reasonable to figure Teasel might have been 5-7 years older than Dennehy, which would have made him old enough to accomplish some exploits. I suppose it's possible he was in the early days of Vietnam, though. Also, if the medals belonged to somebody else you'd think there'd be a name on the frame or a picture or something.

However, there's a simpler explanation to all of this, which is because the book said so. Most people watched the movie and never read Morrel's book, but apparently the point was made. In the novel Teasel's actually more sympathetic, though still fairly bitter about it.

I watched Rambo a few months ago after a very long time and really enjoyed it and it worked on the PTSD level story that it was told. Regards to the Sheriff I vaguely remember that it was actually a subplot to show his history of being in the army and whatnot to give some background of his assholeness. The movie apart for a few dated stunts and scenes holds up pretty well.

Top Gun - 3/10. Awful film, was really surprised how bad I found it to be. Almost nothing works and the action scenes sucked as well, I got no real sense of positioning or tactics during any of it. Nor did any of the film have any sense of urgency or suspense. Stuff just happens. And there was zero chemistry between Maverick and that lady.

Top Gun Maverick - 8,5/10. Visually the film is just fantastic and the action is top notch. Plot/characterwise it is that typical action film plot, but just executed flawlessly with great pacing. Probably one of the best of it's kind, it has to be one of the biggest sequel upgrades and one of the best nostalgia "remember the 80's?" films.

Seeing Maverick and Avatar made me realise how bad the action and cgi has been for some of the latest Disney blockbusters. Maverick by doing it mostly practically and filming it very well, Avatar by taking real care to make the cgi as convincing as possible and polishing it to great extents.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy me some MCU films, but man are these two recent blockbusters on another level in certain aspects.

Wow……never noticed that at all. Nice catch and I’d say your hypothesis is pretty sound. That’s good stuff there EB  :tup

Rambo is one of those R-rated movies from the 80s that I didn't see in real time because my parents wouldn't let me at home, and I never got a chance to at a friend's house. Then as I aged the ship had already left the harbor and I never got around to it.

ErHaO, was that your first viewing of Top Gun (1986)?
