I'm really sorry to hear that Prof. I've had multiple sinus infection until I got one that never went away and I needed surgery so I know the hell that it can be. Get some rest and get better soon! :tup

Thanks, man. Yeah, sinus infections and me have a long, sordid history. I know that once I confirm what the issue is, to get antibiotics asap or it will cascade out of control.

I used to average 2 per Fall/Winter season and then got a break for a few years. Last few that has not been the case.

Well, I got a double whammy. I have the sinus infection like I figured. Turns out, I also have Covid. Now I'm stuck in my room for the next 5 days.

So I didn't see Starset yesterday.  Ticket prices weren't dropping to below $30.00 like I hoped they would (face value was $35.00 on Ticketmaster, raised up to $39.00 the day of).  Plus, I wasn't feeling too great, so I have to draw a line somewhere.

You know what's funny...I got into Starset and found out they just played an acoustic show here at a local bar called The Dirty Bourbon with a nice stage (The Aristocrats played at the same venue) about a week before. I wanted to see if they ever played here before and found two dates, both acoustic, at The Dirty Bourbon and another bar (can't remember the name). If I only listened to them more a few weeks before, as I had liked Echo on my Spotify, but I forgot about it until it came up again, which led to me wanting to hear more from them.

I don't know how they can be so proud of winning with them odds. - Little Big Man

Sooo I kind of got behind on doing my updates here, I won't go into too much detail on the ones I missed...

I saw AFI a month ago, they were awesome.  Davey's voice is a bit weak these days on any of the screams, but he sounds great on some of the newer stuff that doesn't require screams.  Band was energetic and the setlist included stuff from basically every album which was a nice treat to get such diversity and some rare songs.

AFI LIVE @ Terminal 5 New York City NY 11/9/2022

Then the weekend before Thanksgiving were back to back concerts with my gf.  That Friday we saw Tower of Power and we found tickets online for front row resale for only 20 bucks each.  Hell yeah! Awesome show.  They have a new singer who sounded amazing. They asked not to be filmed so no video from me, but the staff wasn't enforcing it so I did snap some pics.  Also, we got a setlist at the end of the show!

The following night was the local ballroom's "Skanksgiving" as they call it.  Their annual ska concert with this year featuring Goldfinger and Catch 22 as the main acts. We also got there in time to see Mustard Plug and The Planet Smashers.  Fun concert, but it was sold out and VERY packed.  Like uncomfortably packed.  I used to love Catch 22 but they clearly are a shell of themselves now.  Their set was fun, but not very good overall. Goldfinger was pretty solid, my first time seeing them, but I've mostly never been much of a fan.  Their family was there and I thought that was kind of cool.  Sadly, I'm almost 100% certain I caught the flu at this show and that's why I basically got behind on doing these reviews or basically much of anything.

Skanksgiving 2022 Goldfinger Catch 22 Mustard Plug Starland Ballroom NJ

And after finally recovering from the flu, it was back to concerts last weekend.  Our highly anticipated Atlantic City trip to see Greta Van Fleet since the postponement last winter.  I've never been to the Hard Rock before so I was curious about the venue and casino especially since I'll be back in a few months for another concert.  I thought it was mostly awesome. I love the casino vibe of the show, where you can just go outside and come back in. Between bands we gambled for example and had a smoke before coming back into the venue.  Plus the main lobby area is really nice.

Show was sold out so it was packed and most people were already there by the time we got in to see Rival Sons.  I didn't realize until earlier that day there was actually another band, The Velveteers, opening, but we missed them because we decided to go to the buffet and gamble instead.  Rival Sons were pretty good.  Definitely a good opener for Greta being a classic rock sounding band.  The singer was pretty good.  I didn't love them, but definitely enjoyable.

Greta Van Fleet were absolutely phenomenal.  This was my 4th time seeing them and definitely the best of the four.  Maybe because they had some time off from the injury, but the singer's voice was great and the band was really great. You could just feel it in your chest when he belts out those notes with that voice.  It's quite impressive and reminds me a lot of Anneke Van Giersbergen in just how you physically feel their voice.  A lot of their songs had extended intros/outros/instrumentals so while it was a 12 song set list, the show was close to a full 2 hours long.  This was the 2nd of 2 nights and they actually rotated two songs so our show had 2 songs that were played much less so that excited me quite a bit.

Greta Van Fleet & Rival Sons LIVE @ Hard Rock Atlantic City NJ 12/10/22

I got back home from AC the next afternoon, made my youtube edit, packed my bags (since I was heading to LA the next morning) and went right back out to New York City for another concert.  This is likely my band of the year.  I discovered them as an opener in March, got their new album right after (my 2022 album of the year), and then saw them again in the summer as an opener on another tour.  Then they announced their first headline tour and it completely sold out across the board! I'm so proud of this band and while I may be a new fan, this band KILLED it this year.

Anyway, before they came on, I caught two other bands (there was a 4th that I missed).  Make Them Suffer and Dayseeker were both metalcore bands not too different than the headliner they were supporting.  I thought both were solid bands.  I may have to check them out further.

Bad Omens came on and the sold out venue was singing along to every song.  The show was also live streamed.  Sadly the youtube video someone put up of it is already taken down otherwise I'd share it (I watched it Monday night).  Got to see more songs from their new album live that they didn't do on the previous two tours.  I thought the singer sounded amazing.  My only issue was I had a shit view stuck in the back.  I found this show very interesting because it was sold out, but the merch booths were empty, the bathrooms were empty, the bars were empty, and the smoking section was empty.  Why?  EVERYONE was up close on the GA floor to keep their spot. Yeah, I couldn't move up more than 8 feet from the back bar. Oh well, show was really good.

Bad Omens LIVE in the Concrete Jungle Irving Plaza New York 12/11/2022

Now that I'm in LA... I was able to score a late release ticket for the sold out special Metallica benefit concert on Friday night, also with guess who opening.... Greta Van Fleet!!!! Oh man I'm so excited for this.  Saturday is also a metal show at the forum I may attend. So next up:

December 16th - Metallica & Greta Van Fleet @ Microsoft Theater, Los Angeles CA
December 17th - Amon Amarth, Carcass & Obituary @ Kia Forum, Los Angeles CA

I was also at Saturday's show, but I felt differently, as I was actually disappointed in BOTH Rival Sons AND Greta. As far as RS goes, this was my 3rd or 4th time seeing them (all as openers) and this was BY FAR the least enjoyable performance of theirs I've seen. I think they may have missed their opportunity and have regressed. As far as Greta goes, it was definitely an enjoyable performance, but much more subdued than when I saw them in '19! I do love watching the guitarist though as he is in my opinion, the second coming of Jimmy Page! Looking forward to seeing them continue to evolve. They are the best young band in rock, imo, even if this show wasn't as up to par. Then again, I only have one other show to compare it to,

What was so wrong with Rival Sons this time?  I will say this, playing in mostly the dark did feel like a missed opportunity IMO they were hard to see. I do think GVF was a bit off from being a perfect show, I noticed quite a few mess ups, but overall I kind of like those small things because it shows how live and real they are, but otherwise didn't get the feeling of being subdued.  Can't believe 6 days later I'm about to see them again on the opposite side of the country.

Dude, that Skanksgiving lineup is great. Give me Streetlight Manifesto over Catch 22, but love it either way

Funny enough, at the same venue is Streetlight last night and tonight. I would have been there if I were home.

Maybe the last concerts of 2022 for me....

Last Friday I was fortunate enough to scoop up a late release face value ticket to the sold out All Within My Hands benefit concert by Metallica with Greta Van Fleet opening and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

What an epic show this was. I've never been to the Microsoft Theater in LA.  Reminded me of Radio City in NYC.  Pretty nice and big theater, but not designed for a metal concert in terms of concessions.  Just terribly long lines if you wanted a beer.  But that may be my only complaint.... OK and the crowd was LAME, but this concert was awesome.

It started early, at 6pm with a Jimmy Kimmel intro.  It was fairly clear at this moment that whenever Jimmy had the mic it was going to be bad jokes and trying to get donations.  Understood, it's a benefit concert, but man, I thought Jimmy Kimmel was not funny at all.  Metallica toured with Jim Breuer before who was light years funnier with the Metallica jokes.  I still thought it was cool for him to be there though.  He introduced Greta Van Fleet as they had been Metallica's chosen opener for most of their headline shows the last year or so (I even saw them together in November 2021 in Atlanta).

Greta were awesome as usual.  I had just seen them 6 days earlier in NJ so going coast to coast with the band was pretty cool.  They started with a "Cold Wind" intro tease which confused the heck out of me because they hadn't done that at the last show.  Cool new twist to starting their set.  They ended up only doing 6 songs which was unfortunate.  It looks like they got cut short too.  The timeline I had said they had 5 more minutes when their set ended and being that they ended with Broken Bells, it seemed they probably wanted to do Highway Tune next.  Sucks, but they also did Caravel which they didn't do the previous week so I got to see a pretty different, albeit short, show.  Crowd was not into them at all though, the guy next to me was making fun of them, people were still just filling into the seats, and no surprise, it was 6:55 when they ended.  Sucks it was so early and short, but man, I love this band!

After more Jimmy Kimmel, Metallica came out for their acoustic set opening with an acoustic version of Blackened! So cool! Then The Unforgiven which is a song I really enjoy so seeing it acoustic really was incredible.  They then did two cover songs that they've never performed before and ended the acoustic set with Whiskey in the Jar which FINALLY got the crowd waking up.

After another break with Jimmy and Tony Hawk, Metallica came back out for their electric set.  Starting with Call of Ktulu which was an amazing way to start the set! People were finally standing. I wasn't crazy about the next two choices, Harvester of Sorrow which was pretty awesome live and Holier Than Thou which somehow happens to be the one random song they play everytime I see them  :lol Then they did a brand new version of the song All Within My Hands (the name of the benefit).  They took their acoustic version of the St. Anger song and then electrified it a bit.  You can see the full song here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vr4PYGWV-pA as lots of people commented thinking it was a load/reload era sounding version of a St. Anger song.  For me, the next song was the highlihgt of the night.  Creeping Death.  For whatever reason, for me, that song just felt amazing in the moment. People were reacting strongly to it (unlike the indifference in the room to the previous song). After Enter Sandman, they live debuted their new single!  Of course Lars has a little mishap with his cymbal causing a false start  :rollin so fucking funny if you ask me. The night still had one more special moment, they did Nothing Else Matters with singer/guitaris St. Vincent.  I'm not familiar with her at all, so it didn't really WOW me per say, but it was still really cool to see someone else sing and perform with Metallica live.  They ended wtih Seek and Destroy as the concert ended exactly at 9pm on the dot.  I thought it was kind of lame to be such a short show, but like my first two complaints, it's hard to complain when this concert was really incredible.

Also, they gave out these programs! On the way out, the ushers were handing more out, so I grabbed a few of them figuring they were cool memorabilia and maybe worth something one day, who knows.

Here's my full video of the night, lots of footage covering everything I talked about! Metallica & Greta Van Fleet All Within My Hands @ SOLD OUT Microsoft Theater Los Angeles 12/16/2022

then the following day....

I went to the Kia Forum for the final show of the Great Heathen Army Tour! With Amon Amarth, Carcass, Obituary (and Cattle Decapitation who I missed)

This is my second time at the Forum, which I consider a fairly iconic music venue.

Big venue for this show, so the seating area was pretty empty and I scooped up a cheap ticket in the back center, literally the last row they were selling (full arena seating was blocked off).  I was not familiar with Obituary or Carcass before as generally, this is not my style of metal I listen to.  I thought both bands were pretty decent.  Crowd on the floor was pretty wild for both bands.

Amon Amarth put on one hell of a show.  I don't think I realized how big of a stage show they were going to put on until right before they came on and I walked around the venue to the side of the stage and saw the massive statues and stage they had prepped for the show.  They played Run to the Hills on the PA before coming out.  Perfect.  I'd compare their stage shows to Iron Maiden in some ways, and Rammstein in others. Lots and lots of pyro which I love.  A sword fighting battle during on song.  A huge ship set.  Oh and let's not forget what the singer said was likely the biggest row pit of the entire tour! This show from a visual standpoint was just incredible from start to finish, also, with the crowd being pretty wild on the floor.  I really enjoyed my view.  As for the music, I really enjoyed it as well.  These songs are very catchy and I very much enjoyed the guitar playing.  Great headlining set.  If this is the last show for 2022 for me, I will be happy. (there's a show on Wednesday that is sold out, but if I can get a fair value ticket I'd go)

Yeah, Microsoft Theater isn't really set up for big metal shows, in my opinion, due to the all seats layout.  Still, you get a lot of known bands like DT and Judas Priest playing there when they are too big to play the all-GA Hollywood Palladium, but not quite big enough to play arenas like The Forum or Staples, and it's not seasonal enough to play in amphitheaters.

That's said, I've been to a few shows there and it's a good venue, but then again, I like all three venues (Staples, Microsoft Theater, and The NoVo) in LA Live.  When I was in the area last Monday for a women's hockey game, there was a small ad for a Dragon Ball Symphony show in January at the theater and I checked AXS and it turned out that it was cancelled which sorta bums me out.

Also, while I was in Staples, there were plenty of plugs for a Bush show at the Yaamava Casino in Highland next Friday.  I may consider going to that if the right pieces fall into place.  Probably get a feel for the venue before seeing Alter Bridge there in April (the day before Wrestlemania is in Inglewood......)

Did a final tally recently for my concerts in 2022...

64 total concerts (beating my previous record of 59 in 2019).  I saw a concert in 8 different states (New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Nevada, California, and Georgia).  Also in two foreign countries (Netherlands and Germany).  Over 80 bands I saw for the first time ever.  Out of those 64 concerts, I made a youtube video for all but 3 of them (Dream Theater in Red Bank because I was front row, Porcupine Tree at Radio City because of a strict no phone rule, and Tower of Power in NJ because I was front row and they requested no video)  Quite an incredible year for me.

I understand the year is over so this thread is basically dead and could be locked, but I've been working on my "top 10 concert moments of 2022" video and would love to share it here when I finish (hopefully by this weekend). I already have my top 10 points listed and videos all compiled together. I just need to add my commentary and edit it all together.

I think that's awesome.  :)

I think the most I've done in 1 year is in the 50s.  But I don't think I'd ever come close to 80 new bands in one year unless I did a few big festivals, which has never really seemed like my thing.  Usually I see a lot of shows when I see multiple shows from one of my favorite bands.

This year was 18 separate dates, which I'm quite pleased with considering my COVID nervousness.  (Of course Katatonia was more than half of the 18. :))  9 states (Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania), plus DC, and Canada. 11 bands I'd never seen before (most of those from ProgPower).

Damn Marc, that's crazy. The most I ever saw in one year was 21, in 1987 and 1991.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

Yeah, 19 of mine were from ProgPower alone.  But I did a lot of full shows this year, I really tried to make it to see all the openers so lots of the shows had 1 or 2 new bands. But it'll be tough to keep that number high, got too many check marks this year.

Sometimes I try to avoid opening bands, but I liked some of them this time and made sure to see them.

I don't really have a large list of bands I want to see that I haven't.  There are some, but I don't think most would be likely to tour the US anyway.

The way I've been seeing it lately, I paid the price of the ticket and already plan on going.  If I can get there for the full show (coming after work makes seeing the opening band tough depending on the venue), I'm getting the full value of my experience and maybe the opening band impresses me.

I guess it all depends for me.  If I can get there in time without any stress and there aren't that many opening bands, I'll do it.  I once saw Evergrey with like 6 opening bands, and even though some of them only played for like 20 minutes, it was torture.

I will say, I don't have much interest in seeing the paying opening local band.  For example, there's a local concert this weekend I may go to.  The headliner is a legit known band from the area (God Forbid), I think there's then 4 local openers.  I don't really have the desire to see them all. It's just too many bands I don't know, so I totally agree with you on these situations.  Most concerts that I attend aren't like this though.

I like to check out the artists I dont recognize on Spotify before a show. Then decide if I wanna check them out or not.

Yeah, I try to do that too, but I usually don't get around to doing it for all the bands.  I also don't mind going in completely blind.  Sometimes that's good too to just have a fresh head for a band and get to see their show to influence you vs. opinions and music videos or whatever else you may find from a google search.

Here's my full video Top 10 Concert Moments of 2022 *cramx3 style*

It's 25 minutes long (and yes, I have ads running on it, sorry!) I put the chapters in to make it easy to skip around. Hope people enjoy, I really love making these as some sort of culmination of the year of live music I got to experience. I plan on doing the same thing in 2023.

This was great dude, really good stuff! My three biggest takeaways from the video.

1. That 311 bass solo looked cool as fuck, I definitely would've loved seeing that live.

2. Holy shit, Amon Amarth's stage set up is fucking amazing!

3. What the hell was that instrument that the Nightwish guy was playing?

Thanks for watching!

311 day was awesome, as a big 311 fan it makes me mad I missed these events all those years.

Amon Amarth stage show was massive. I would put it up there with some of the best I've seen. No one gets to Rammstein level but a few are a notch below such as Amon Amarth.

Troy plays Uilleann pipes which are basically bag pipes that don't require using your mouth so he can sing while he plays.

Yea it was a good watch dude. Are you doing more 2022 best of videos then?

You can't hope to match Rammstein levels of stage show, without a crazy budget, but the Viking ships looked really professional and made it an epic back drop.

My first thought was bagpipes, but was really confused as he wasn't  playing with his mouth. Never even heard of that instrument, but it makes sense.

Wasn't planning on it. Do you have ideas for another one?

I just watched the video.  What did James say when Lars had to stop the song?  I couldn't quite make it out.

Always nice seeing Kahn. :) Alice in Chains was very cool as well.

Though an ad popped up right in the middle of it - I don't mind them being there but I wish it happened at predetermined time stamps.

It's just in the video you made it clear it wasn't your top 10 shows of the year, which made me think a top 10 shows of 22 video was coming. So yea, that  :lol

I think he said "That's the radio edit".

Yeah, he said that's the radio edit and then asked if "all better?" right before starting the song again.

As for top concerts, I don't know.  I thought about it, but I don't know if I have that much to say about it to make an interesting video.  That or my favorite live songs.  I guess, historically, my top moments videos (ive done one every year since 2018) have gotten little to no views and while I really enjoy doing it, it seems there's no traction there to me to go further.  I do have a listing of both though, for my own tracking.
