yeah i think that there was one set of the songsi sent i had to swap out for a shorter song to be under the cutoff but all my submissions ended up being three songs ranging from like 10-14 minute or so which is some nice symmetry

15 is plenty tho, with 18 people in that's like... up to four and a half hours of music  :lol

Let's see how 15 goes. I know it can be kind of a funny number to hit, but I wanted to have a set up for multiple songs while not getting too excessive, for reasons Cyril stated pretty well. I do want to hear feedback on how people are finding it, though.

For what it's worth, I don't think it's worth thinking about it as "wasted minutes" if you send 12 or 13 minutes of music rather than, like 14:50. I can't imagine the the difference in length would even begin to be a factor until you get to the point of submissions that are under 9-10 minutes. I'd definitely rather you send 12 minutes of your best material than 14:50 of second-tier stuff.

Yeah, it's not so much about material that's "second-tier', just that there's an argument that people perceive quality so very differently, that 14:50 of material I'd rate a 95 might have a better chance of someone else liking it than 13:10 of material I'd rate a 99, just by sheer chance and volume.  Most of the bands I'm considering for me have so much strong material that I could easily send many different sets, and it's agonizing leaving things off, for the same reasons any top 10 list or such is painful.  It all sort of depends upon the vibe of a band and the qualities you say you like in music, and somewhat tailoring recommendations based on that.  Songs tend to have a particular unique feel to them, so sometimes to a point more can be better for a diversification strategy, but then you may be spreading things too thin, particularly since I don't recall if you've mentioned how many times you'll play each set of selections (that may be unplanned or might vary for you).  As may be evident in this thread alone, or if you haven't noticed from other posts I've made in other threads in the past, I'm prone to overthinking things.  But I'll just play it by ear and see how the early rounds go.

I think this might be a case of overthinking, yeah, but I do understand where you're coming from. But part of the challenge of roulettes is precisely that you don't know what the host will like. I think that's even true for the people here who know each other's tastes pretty well—they can have a pretty good idea, but still be surprised sometimes. My approach when I'm a participant is to think of it as sending something I want them to hear from the artist in question, without putting the pressure of "is this the best possible selection" on it.

To answer your procedural question, I plan to listen to every submission three times, but I may do a fourth if I have a hard time choosing between two in a particular case.

(sorry, Pools A and C)

Now hang on a minute

Was it mean of me to write that? Yes. Do I currently have 17 of 18 submissions for round 1? Also yes.

My approach with the 15 minute time limit is to try to send songs that cover the different sounds a band may have. For my first submission that was super hard.

I think 15 mins is fine. There were a few combination of songs I wanted to send but it went over by a few seconds. I ended up sending 2 songs worth 11 minutes of music I think.

Maybe allow people to send more than 15 mins, but penalize it  :) -1 point for every 30 seconds over 15 mins.

Well, theoretically we each know our own tastes far better than anyone else (not to say we sometimes don't have blind spots that others might notice better than we do), but I imagine everyone is at least somewhat regularly disappointed by things they think they might enjoy, or serendipitously surprised by things they didn't expect to like.

Sometimes,  the host is open for something different. But you have to figure that out.
