Thank you! I shall listen.

Tell you what, though. The Sinner Get Ready album artwork might be one of my favourites ever. Kinda thing vinyl was made for.

Yeah it’s a great artwork.

Lingua Ignota is actually one of my favorite female artists. I love dark music and music doesn’t really get much darker than her music.

This one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1ZweG__q-w gets very intense!

A lot of these super-heavy bands aren't actually that heavy, they're just noisy. Strip away the noise production and there's not that much there.

Oh, I agree. ‘Heavy’ is only heavy when there’s something else to contrast it. Making something uneasy on the ears doesn’t neveassarily constitute ‘heavy’ if you ask me.

I once heard a film director say, that if you have a horror film that is pure horror and nothing else, it will not grab the viewers. But if you lighten the mood, contrast the fear inducing scenes with something else, than the horror hits way harder. And imo this applies to heavy music as well. A full frontal assault gets tiresome for me after some time, add some contrasts and the heavy parts seem that more heavy.

The "heaviest" ones I enjoy are:

Meshuggah - Catch 33

Dagoba - What Hell Is About

Septicflesh - Communion
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

Lingua Ignota - Sinner Get Ready

And I never want to hear it again.

Come on! You don’t like feeling like you’re in hell from time to time?
No.  And that's exactly what it felt like when I listened the first time.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Yeah, very tough to listen to and reading the lyrics along with the music, damn.

If we're going with albums that are emotionally heavy (while musically "soft"), then these come to mind:

The first 3 are all about the death of a closed person to the artists (mother, wife, and son respectively). The last one is The Caretaker Everywhere at the End of Time, 6 discs about each stage of dementia. I love it, but a friend of mine can't listen to it because it sends them on an emotional wreckage, an existential despair.

Whatever your definition of "heavy" is...that's cool with me.

I've never been a huge fan of Testament - some good songs here and there - with one exception: Titans Of Creation is chock full of brutal, amazing riffs and insane drumming. Bludgeoning but exceptionally good from beginning to end and the sonic values enhance the experience. I'm not sure anything I've heard is heavier.

Good stuff!  I've been a Testament fan for 35 years and they have never disappointed.  A lot of their older stuff is classic and pretty damn heavy as well.  :tup

Speaking of heavy but not crushingly heavy.
I always thought that Anthrax' Stomp 442 was surprisingly heavy and aggressive. And I'm one of the few that think this is among their best output.

I was doing a bit. :neverusethis:
I've never sat through the whole thing front to back (and I probably never will) but I listened to the first three stages and parts of Stage 6 today. Stage 3 is easily my favorite - it hits the sweet spot for me between dark and relaxing.

At first it seems like this would be an easy question but actually I have no idea what the heaviest album I've ever heard is.  Maybe whatever Meshuggah album I listened to at some point. I listened to a Death album a long time ago that seemed really heavy (and I hated it).

Testament is one of the most consistent Metal bands out there! They've changed their sounds here and there but the quality is always present. I love The New Order, The Ritual, Demonic and Brotherhood of the Snake all the same even if they're different between them. I'd consider the albums I like the less somewhat weak, but I can't recall them having released an album I've actively disliked. And they know how to play heavy, too

I think I'll go with the "heaviest album I enjoy" approach.

Septic Flesh - Sumerian Demons. The combination of heavy riffing, deep growl vocals and choir, it's simply mesmerising.

Instantly thought of these:

Sepultura - Beneath the Remains
Slayer - Reign in Blood
Electric Wizard - Come My Fanatics
Exhorder - Slaughter in the Vatican
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
