I will go to my grave thinking the opening to The A-Team is the greatest television opening theme/sequence ever. You get the synopsis of the show in 68 words, words every boy who grew up in the 80s should have memorized. Then a bombastic theme plays over clips from the show, setting you up for the quintessential 80s action you are about to experience. I also love what they did with the theme in Season 5, with the drum intro and clips from the trial episodes, before the new version of the theme kicks in.
IMO the opener is easily 100 times better than any of the individual episodes.  Or, indeed, all of them.

What is your favorite TV show theme song, and why is it the WKRP in Cincinnati opener?

The WKRP in Cincinnati opening theme is indeed good. Not the subject of the thread, but the ending theme is the greatest song played over closing credits in the history of television.
Agreed!

I honestly think a lot of people wouldn’t believe this is a tv theme song, it sounds like a single.

This is a good one. My brother used to watch this show. Sounds like Robert Plant's "In the Mood."

I'm glad there was at least one mention of Airwolf.  The lack of Magnum P.I. or Simon & Simon disturbs me though.

Also, from the 80s
Miami Vice
The Greatest American Hero
The Facts of Life
Hill Street Blues
LA Law
The Fall Guy
Family Ties

70s:
The Love Boat
Hart to Hart
Six Million Dollar Man
Starskey & Hutch
S.W.A.T.

And to hit the way-back machine
Batman
Beverly Hillbillies
Bonanza
The Lone Ranger
The Twilight Zone
Get Smart
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Definite nostalgia kicking in here, but the intro to Star Blazers had to have been the best intro to an animated show I saw as a kid.

Honestly, I could go the rest of my life without hearing the Batman TV theme song again.  *shudders*

Any fans of Ultraman?

How about The Munsters?

south park's theme song takes the cake. that groove, it just hits the sweet spot. honestly, it's the finest thing les claypool's cooked up to me, not too big on primus. and i gotta admit, when i finally got what kenny was saying, i cried laughing. i dare you to look it up. i'd share, but i can't say it here – i'd get the ban hammer! :rollin

If we’re including cartoons, the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a banger. Also the Animaniacs theme song still cracks me up.

I went and listened to The Munsters because I watched that on Nick at Nite as a kid (I think). What a classic theme song.

The Munsters IS a good one!  As far as the actual show goes, I've always enjoyed The Addams Family over The Munsters.  But The Munsters do have the better theme AND cars.  The Munster Koach and Dragula were smokin'!

I never really watched South Park, and never really got Kenny, so never gave half a second to what he may or may not ever be saying. Just looked up the lyrics and, yeah... I did not expect that.

Two pages and no mention of The Simpsons? Shame on you.

Also this.

The lack of Magnum P.I. or Simon & Simon disturbs me though.

and this:

It’d be a long list of Mike Post themes from the 80’s.
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

Not the best, or my favorite by any means, but in terms of a song setting up the atmosphere of a show, there wasn't much better than the intro to Twin Peaks.
