What are your favorite albums of the 20s so far
« on: July 01, 2022, 06:19:25 PM »
With June 2022 now over, the 20s are now 1/4 of the way over, so I thought it was good time to see what everyone's favorite albums of the 20s look like so far.

It is hard to me to put a specific order, so I will go with tiers.  Going with new studio albums only, no live albums or re-recorded albums, and I am talking the proper studio albums, meaning I do not take into account bonus tracks or anything like that.

Top tier
Neal Morse Band - Innocence and Danger
Styx - Crash of the Crown
Taylor Swift - Folklore

Rounding out most of the top 10
Porcupine Tree - Closure/Continuation (it has only been out for a week, but I am comfortable putting it in this 2nd tier already)
Transatlantic - The Absolute Universe: The Ultimate Edition
Taylor Swift - Evermore
Dream Theater - A View from the Top of the World
Alanis Morissette - Such Pretty Forks in the Road
Tears for Fears - The Tipping Point

Others I like that are somewhat notable
Steven Wilson - The Future Bites
Liquid Tension Experiment - Volume 3
The Flower Kings - Islands
John Petrucci - Terminal Velocity
Neal Morse - Sola Gratia
Anneke van Giersbergen - The Darkest Skies are the Brightest
Olivia Rodrigo - Sour
Arcade Fire - WE
D'Virgilio, Morse & Jennings - Troika

Albums I still need to get to know more
Iron Maiden - Senjutsu
Fleet Foxes - Shore
The Flower Kings - By Royal Decree
Lana Del Ray - Blue Banisters

Nice to see Wet Leg make an appearance. Would be in my top ten, too. Together with Van Weezer

An Olivia Rodrigo track came up on my Qobuz discovery list earlier. Very much enjoyed it so shall check out the album two of you have mentioned.

Favourite:
Wilderun - Epigone

Other pretty cool ones:
Pain of Salvation - Panther
Mr. Bungle - The Raging Wrath of the Easter Bunny
Devin Townsend - The Puzzle
VOLA - Witness

—-

And then it occurred to me that the past 2,5 years I have discovered so much more old music than newly released stuff and that I’ve been way more busy playing music than listened those years.
Hey dude slow the fuck down so we can finish together at the same time.

The "edit" button is there if you still want to add some Taylor Swift.  :hat :hat

It's a fun little pop rock record with catchy melodies all over the place.  I like it.

There's a lot of good music out there, but there are only two that need no thought whatsoever:

Iron Maiden - Senjutsu
Neal Morse Band - Innocence and Danger

I could put the two Taylor Swift records on here too, for real, but these are the two that really impact me day-to-day.

'22 is going to get shafted because there aren't that many albums I've spent the necessary additional plays to get a better feeling for them.  That usually happens later in the year.  So I could easily see a number of the '22 releases going up a tier or two.  And given that I've listened to more new music in the past 2-3 years than probably any period ever, the gradations are pretty granular between them as it is.  I could probably get a dozen tiers of good albums going, but I have to cut it off somewhere.  This is something like a top 100, I didn't count exactly.  Tons of good albums I had to leave for this not to be a novel.

I need to give that PRR album some more spins. I think I listened to it twice when it came out and kind of forgot about it.

I'm not usually much of a neo prog guy, but that album and Phideaux's Doomsday Afternoon are two of my favorite progressive rock albums ever.

This year's PRR was pretty good too, but largely felt like a less-excellent version of Eupnea to me.

You have a lot of overlap with me (Swallow The Sun, Draconian, Emma Ruth Rundle/Thou, White Ward, Emma Ruth Rundle, Light Field Reverie, Wheel).  If I went to 150, maybe 200, I'd also have those Evergrey, Mastodon, Plini, The Ocean, Cult of Luna, Witherfall, Animals As Leaders, Rivers of Nihil, Haken, Orbit Culture, and maybe Porcupine Tree albums (haven't gotten to that one yet).  Light Field Reverie and Wheel are especially under the radar.  I should have included A.A. Williams as well, I was conflating the date with her self-titled album in '19.  She'll have another one later this year that I'm ecstatic for.

This is a real struggle for me as I've been suffering from crippling anxiety ever since this pandemic thing began, and I've not been able to relax and enjoy music. Most of what I can listen to now is a far cry from what I used to listen to before. The following I can recognise as good, even if I've not enjoyed them as much as I should have.

Marillion - An Hour Before its Dark
iron Maiden - Senjutsu
The Pretty Reckless - Death by Rock and Roll
Ebony Buckle - Disco Lasers
Tears for Fears - The Tipping Point
Big Big Train - Common Ground & Welcome to the Planet
Pure Reason Revolution - Above Cirrus

Note that neither DT not TA made that list, nor did Nightwish. The new PT album is very good, but I'm not that familiar with it yet.

We will pay the price, but we will not count the cost..."

I'm sure I'm forgetting several, but off the top of my head:

Emma Ruth Rundle — Engine of Hell
Transatlantic — The Absolute Universe
Julien Baker — Little Oblivions
The Killers — Pressure Machine
Need — Norchestrion...
Godspeed You! Black Emperor — G_d’s Pee AT STATE’S END!
Kauan — Ice Fleet
Manchester Orchestra — The Million Masks of God
Panopticon — ...And Again Into the Light
David Gray — Skellig
Pain of Salvation — Panther
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit — Reunions
Dream Theater — A View From the Top of the World

And it's too early for me to count them, but I'm really enjoying the new Coheed and Cambria, Seventh Wonder, and Porcupine Tree.

I should have included Marissa Nadler, Oceans of Slumber, VOLA and Shape of Despair as well. I'm going to check out some of the names on your list.
A lot of names I'm not familiar with yet. Started today with Messa which is really good.

Especially looking for stuff like Emma Ruth Rundle and Marissa Nadler. Some recommendations are appreciated ;)

Yeah, I've been on a periodic hunt for more like them in the last few years.  There are other side projects from both of them if you haven't already heard them yet, such as Emma's other collaborations Marriages, The Nocturnes, or even Red Sparrowes to an extent.  Marissa also has Mountain Home and Droneflower.  Depending upon what it is you like about them, certain artists may appeal more or less, but I'd look into Agnes Obel, Anna von Hausswolff, Aythis, Darkher, Chelsea Wolfe, Daughter, Emily Jane White, FVNERALS, ISON, Lethian Dreams, Louise Lemon, Noeta, Shedfromthebody, Thayer Sarrano, and The Eden House to start.

Coldplay - Music Of The Spheres

Cool to see I'm not the only one to put them on my list. I think people are being pretty harsh with Coldplay. They are really good at what they do and I enjoy all of their albums even though I still prefer their old style to the more "pop" sound they have now. Anyway, Coloratura is one of my best songs of 2021. If Coldplay could always play prog music like that, it would be amazing.

Yeah I've been listening to them since the beginning but I think I prefer the poppier and newer side of Coldplay.

I saw them on tour and it was amazing. I had no idea they took Coloratura out of setlist rotation. It's become my favorite of the album, this performance fills at least some of that void. So amazing live, really wished they had kept it in rotation. I'm assuming if they have a 2nd leg they'll put it back in.
