Going by some of my recent loved tracks on Last.fm:

The Parchment - Iron Maiden
Lumerian - Soen
Fortune - Soen
Martyrs - Soen
Jurassic|Cretaceous - The Ocean
Zarah - Maybeshewill
A View From the Top of the World - Dream Theater
At Day's End - Redemption

Then a couple of 'classical music' pieces to complete the top 10:
Symphony #11: Movement 4 - Shostakovich
Symphony #10: Movement 2 - Shostakovich
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

Currently receiving heavy rotation:

1. Yes - Awaken
2. Yes - Endless Dream
3. Meshuggah - Broken Cog
4. Northlane - Echo Chamber
5. Blanket - White Noise
6. Frost* - Terrestrial
7. The Mercury Program - Chez Viking
8. Iron Maiden - Isle of Avalon
9. Shy, Low - Where the Light Bends
10. Stabbing Westward - Control Z

Just finishing up listening to these. I'd already heard 1, 3, 6, 8 & 10.

The Yes songs aren't my faves but they're pretty decent. I'm quite liking the new Meshuggah and Broken Cog is solid. I'll be honest, I don't remember much about the Northlane song but the Blanket song was pretty cool, might check them out further. I didn't think the latest Frost* was the best but this is one of the better songs. As someone who isn't an Iron Maiden fan I like the more modern, longer, proggy songs. Shy, Low was probably the nicest surprise here, I'd definitely check out more. Stabbing Westward is OK but not quite my thing.

Total score 6.5/10, you can send for round two now.

Currently, I guess that would be:

1. Volbeat - Shotgun Blues
2. Volbeat - Temple of Ekur
3. Mastodon - The Crux
4. Mastodon Blue Walsh
5. Coheed and Cambria - Shoulders
6. Leprous - Not Even a Name
7. Foo Fighters - Rope
8. Arch Enemy - Handshake with Hell
9. The Contortionist - Language I: Intuition
10. Mastodon - Skeleton of Splendor

Great list here. So glad to see someone else loving Coheed's singles from the new album. Can't wait until Friday!

Shoulders is actually the only one I've been listening to. The others I played once and haven't again, just waiting for the album  :corn

Then you're a better man than me. That's what I normally do with singles proceeding an album I'm looking forward to. I can't seem to do that with my favourite band though apparently.

All four singles are great and although I've already played all of them, other than Comatose, a shit load, I haven't burnt out on them. It's some top tier Coheed sing a long fodder.

At this moment...

Ross Jennings - Grounded
Justin Bieber - Ghost
Ballyhoo - Rollercoaster
Eiffel 65 - La Mia Lente/The Filter
The Dead South - Diamond Ring
Hybrid - Sky Full of Diamonds (album version)
Imagine Dragons - Every Night
Neverending White Lights - Starlight
White Moth Black Butterfly - Spirits
Devin Townsend - Spirits Will Collide (Order of Magnitude version)

These songs are the ones I have been playing a lot recently. I have my reasons for each song, and they all have also helped me with my moods recently.

In no particular order, the ones dominating my airtime...

Band Maid- Domination
Nemophila- Life
Allegaeon- Called Home
Daydream XI- Collector of Souls
Orphaned Land- Ocean Land
Senri Kawaguchi Triangle- Wupatki
Band Maid- Warning!
Nemophila- Oiran
Nemophila- Change the World
Nemophila- Rollin' Rollin'

(Very heavy on the Nemophila in preparation for their concert in two weeks)

Nearly finished this batch. All I can say is, listen to the new Dir en Grey if you haven't already. The only bands I knew here were Orphaned Land, Allegaeon and Daydream XI (so the non Japanese ones?  :lol ). The ones I know are solid enough and the ones I don't were pretty good. Nemophila was the highlight for me. I might check out more  :tup

5. Black Map - Madness

Melodoria has grown on me a ton. Really good album. I don't think it'll top In Droves, but I've enjoyed it a bit more with every spin...

I found out about Black Map when they toured here. I do not remember who they were on tour with though. I think it was Pop Evil, but could be way off. I enjoyed their stuff live enough for me to buy In Droves at their merch.

Bat For Lashes - Moon and Moon
Bat For Lashes - Daniel

Great album, although it's "Two Planets" that I was obsessed with when it came out.

Quote
Emma Ruth Rundle - Shadows of My Name

Had a revival of this song a few months ago, and it would have topped my list back then.  Such a powerful performance.

I've been wanting to check out Abstract Void...is this the album I should start with?

Back To Reality is my favorite, with Wishdream closing in on it.  I'm not sure if Into The Blue isn't as good or I just haven't spent enough time with it yet, but it's on a lower tier for me right now.  Listened to the initial track selection of "Wind of Reminiscence" again and I think I've been underrating this song, it might be my second or third favorite on Back To Reality now.

Jurassic|Cretaceous - The Ocean
I'm picky about my sludge metal, but this one really does the trick.  Having Jonas on it certainly helps.

White Moth Black Butterfly - Spirits
I can't figure out why this album has such mediocre ratings from aggregators.  I love almost every song on it.

Just to see how fast this changes, it's been a little over 2.5 weeks, and a few of my first set are still in strong rotation, but some others from the same artists and others have become more salient as well.

Same artists:

Above The Earth - All Our Dreams
Djelmash - Made For Love

+

Ashes of Ares/Ripper Owens - Monster's Lament
Black Sites - The Worst of Us
Carpenter Brut/Sylvaine - Stabat Mater
Giant Walker - Coda
Joe Cocker - You Are So Beautiful
Lights - Rent
Red Handed Denial - Father Said
Shedfromthebody - Shrines
Vince Gill - Pretty Little Adriana
Zola Jesus - Undertow

Black Sites - The Worst of Us

Love Black Sites! All three albums are great. Cool mix of "new" and "old". They had a bit more of a Voivod influence here and there on the first two records, less so in this last one. But I've enjoyed it a ton, last year.

Black Sites - The Worst of Us

Love Black Sites! All three albums are great. Cool mix of "new" and "old".

Yeah, I have a far higher tolerance for (and a lot of times arguably even a preference for) glossy, pristine modern productions than most similar people, but it's kind of refreshing to hear a more vintage-style job, yet still with the super-low-tuned guitars.  It's not a combination that happens very often.  And when it does it's usually stoner bands, which I'm highly selective about.

3. Deepen this wound- Clouds
7. Western Skies- Mostly Autumn
8. Ghosting- Daylight dies

Killer picks there.

Love Corina's violin parts on "Deepen This Wound", though "See the Sky With Blind Eyes" is probably my favorite track on the album.

On "Western Skies", I still miss Heather Findlay, but Olivia Sparnenn has been growing on me lately.

"Ghosting" is my favorite or second favorite on that album along with "Sunset".  I wish they'd release a new album, it's been over a decade since the last one.

Emma Ruth Rundle & Thou - The Valley
Amenra - A Solitary Reign
Amenra - De Evenmens
Brutus - War
Mastodon - Gobblers of Dregs
Cult of Luna - In Awe Of
Terzij de Horde - Geryon: See Extinguished the Sight of Everything but the Monster
Orbit Culture - At the Front
Rivers of Nihil - The Void from Which no Sound Escapes
Mastodon - More Than I Could Chew

Probably some songs you're already familiar with but I'm curious if you know bands like Amenra and Brutus.
Enjoy!

I had sort of missed your mention of Clouds in the Insomnium thread...I checked out the album and, wow, it is one of the "saddest" I've heard in a while. Beautiful, though. And I'd agree See the Sky with Blind Eyes is a great song, and perfect to close the album. I see they've released a few records - I guess another band to add to the list  ;D

Glad to know you enjoyed them:). I haven’t heard the other albums yet neither but I will definitely check them out. And I totally agree, this music is sooo sad. I’m a huge fan of Insomnium , pain of salvation, Blackfield, PT etc so I can safely say that I’m used to sad music but Clouds is next level of sadness. It’s like getting into this abyss of darkness, but the melodies are still haunting and yet so beautiful. In all cases, that is one of the rare band that I can’t listen to too much otherwise I really get depressed (for information, Insomnium actually makes me happy).

These kinds of questions are simply impossible for me.

Yeah, same :lol

Here's 10 random tunes I've been listening to a lot for some reason:

The Cardigans - Lovefool
Anthrax - Only
Sixpence None the Richer - Kiss Me
Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane - Freight Trane
John Scofield - The Low Road
Iron Maiden - the song that I have at #1 in the countdown
Wilderun - the entire Epigone album
Toadies - Possum Kingdom
Weather Report - Birdland
Rudresh Mahanthappa - Overjoyed

Listened to this batch but forgot to post Lovefool and Kiss Me were all over the radio in the late 90s and these songs take me right back to being a kid. Out of the ones that I didn't know nothing particularly stood out but good stuff generally and music I am not surprised you are into.

Except for Anthrax actually, wouldn't have pegged you as a fan. Outside of a very small selection of songs, I am not into Anthrax.

Onto this batch now...

Lets see, off the top of my head in no specific order:

1. Kings Of Convenience - Summer On The West Hill
2. Animals As Leaders - Gordian Naught
3. Tool - Opiate2
4. Plaid - Zamami
5. Black Map - Madness
6. The National - 90-Mile Water Wall
7. He Is Legend - Time To Stain
8. Meniscus - Overhang
9. Jakub Zytecki - Sunflower
10. ASG - Good Enough To Eat

1. Daniel Tompkins feat. Plini - Wounded Wings
7. Daniel Tompkins - The Abyss

His solo album from '20 is phenomenal, and that's one of the better cuts ("Stains of Betrayal" is my favorite).  Haven't heard the new track, but so far it sounds like a mix of his other work with his ZETA electronic project, which was supposed to have a new album out soon.  I'm thankful he's been so productive personally, because TesseracT has just really been taking their time.

I love how "Wounded Wings" keeps building all the way through. When the final scream kicks in I am -so- close to screaming my lungs out myself, haha

He has released two tracks from the upcoming album. I thought "The Abyss" was really cool, but the other one ("Frenzy") was a bit too aggressive for my taste. Excited about the album either way, I'm sure it'll be great.

I'm just going to post my 10 most listened to songs from the last 12 months from Last.fm:

1. Spiritbox - Eternal Blue
2. LeBrock - In Time
3. Falcom Sound Team JDK - Sunshine Coastline
4. Heart Healer - Awake
5. BT - If I Can Love You Right
6. Abstract Void - Wind of Reminiscence
7. Chvrches - California
8. Earthside - Crater
9. BT - If Memory Serves
10. Falcom Sound Team JDK - Gens D'Armes

I like this. A good excuse to list and talk about some tunes  :)

Um, let's see...if I'm thinking about songs that I've enjoyed lately in my random listening...mixing newer and older in no order whatsoever:

Khirki - Deadpan
Khirki - Raging Bull
Khirki - Medea
Iris Divine - Thirteen
Ghost - Kaisarion
Iron Maiden - Starblind
Bat For Lashes - Moon and Moon
Bat For Lashes - Daniel
Mastodon - Teardrinker
Emma Ruth Rundle - Shadows of My Name

Khirki are a Greek band, they released an album last year (Κτηνωδία) - I keep going back to it. Super-cool mix of modern and classic rock, folk-y melodies and lots of energy (almost punkish urgency at times, especially the first two songs above). There are moodier, slow-burn songs too (like Medea). Highly recommended.

Kaisarion is still one of my favorite songs of the year so far. Insanely catchy and SO well constructed.

I've rediscovered Bat For Lashes' Two Suns after a while...Moon and Moon is such a haunting song, and Daniel is probably the best Cure single The Cure never wrote  ;) Speaking of haunting, the chorus in the Emma Ruth Rundle song is goosebumps all the way.

I've listened through both of these 10s today. Bolsters, I can safely say this selection is exactly the sort of stuff I expect from you. I found most of ot pleasant enough but nothing that really excited me (except for Earthside, which I already knew).

Nick, your list was more up my street but not exactly what I was expecting from you. I already know and love Kaisarion and Teardrinker, two of my favorite songs from two of my favourite albums in the last 12 months.

I was aware of all the other artists except Iris Divine and Khirki. They were both pretty good but Khirki slightly more so. I've added the album to one of my playlists so I'll get to it sometime in the next few years and have no clue where the recommendation came from  :lol

I'm fairly familiar with both Bat For Lashes and Emma Ruth Rundle, and was surprised to see them on your list.

All in all some good stuff  :tup

I'll chuck out another 10 whilst I'm here...

1. Coheed and Cambria - Beautiful Losers
2. My Chemical Romance - Ambulance
3. The Flatliners - Performative Hours
4. Ghost - Twenties
5. The Flatliners - Fireball
6. Megadeth - Night Stalkers
7. Diablo Swing Orchestra - Justice for Saint Mary
8. NOFX - The Shortest Pier
9. Mother's Cake - Hit on Your Girl
10. The Lazy Eyes - Where's My Brain???

Yeah, the singer-songwriter stuff is not my usual go-to, but I go in phases, and around the time you had started the thread it so happened I had rediscovered some of it...that particular Bat for Lashes album I really, really enjoyed when it came out. Emma Ruth Rundle is a more recent discovery, and I'm still exploring. Same with Chelsea Wolfe (not in this list) - I know LithoJazzoSphere is a big fan of both.

Khirki was one of my favorite late-year discoveries of 2021. Such a cool album, it scratched an itch I didn't even know I had. It's not even like they are trying hard to do something particularly new, and yet they sound very unique, with that mixture of heavy rock and folk-y melodies.

It’s gonna be a while before I have the appetite to host another.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

Ten songs I've been enjoying a lot lately, in no particular order other than that which I think of them.

Speed - Nicolo Bardoni
The Apologist - Ross Jennings
Remember Where You Are - Jessie Ware
The Winners - Francis Monkman
Dark Ambition - Nicolo Bardoni
Care - Marillion
We Close Our Eyes - Oingo Boingo
Melody - Kenjiro Sakiya
Shannon - Bend Sinister
Osaka Fall Season Nights - Jesse Cassettes

Just catching up on some more of these.

Just finished this 10, and for the most part they weren't for me. I did, however, quite like the Marillion and Bend Sinister songs  :tup

Currently, I guess that would be:

1. Volbeat - Shotgun Blues
2. Volbeat - Temple of Ekur
3. Mastodon - The Crux
4. Mastodon Blue Walsh
5. Coheed and Cambria - Shoulders
6. Leprous - Not Even a Name
7. Foo Fighters - Rope
8. Arch Enemy - Handshake with Hell
9. The Contortionist - Language I: Intuition
10. Mastodon - Skeleton of Splendor

Just listening to these at the gym  :metal

I already knew all of these songs before listening, they truly are a great batch. The end of Handshake with Hell is particularly :metal
