I've mentioned this a few times before but train covered led zep ii a few years back, the album is on Spotify. I got to see them cover it front to back live and it was awesome. The lead singer from train was in a led zeppelin cover band before starting train.

And then what happened?  “Sweet Soul Sister”?!?  GTFO

Drops of Jupiter makes me cry every time I hear it though.

Impressions time is over!

Battle of Evermore
I actually kinda prefer the vocals in this version

The Boys of Summer
This version actually perfectly captures a nostalgic feeling behind these lyrics.

Sea of Madness
This works way better for me than I thought it would.

Hurt
So iconic that the original feels like the cover instead

21st Century Schizoid Man
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. I’m partial to a bit of horn!

Ramble On
This is way better than I’m willing to give this band credit for

Wicked Game
Very different way of singing this one. Respect!

House of the Rising Sun
Ballsy move to reinterpret such a well-known song this way

Of a Lifetime
I’m loving this one already

I Will Remember
I do love the melodic metal approach taken with this one! Might be an early contender

Little Wing
Kinda miss the vocals, but gotta love the playing!

Time Stand Still
Possibly the most hauntingly beautiful version of this song you could ever hear.

The Show Must Go On
Nothing will ever compare to the original, but this does a mighty admirable job!

The Only Way
I always love it when a band plays a cover song so well you’d think they wrote it themselves

Kashmir
A fresh take on a classic. Beautiful.

Yellow Submarine
I think I like this more than the original already

Judas Be My Guide
I really like the use of the alternate vocal style here.

Absolunote
Quite eclectic. This will require a fair few listens

The US Army Band - Time Stand Still
Sent by jingle.boy

Neil Peart's death was probably the first time a celebrity death really messed me up. Like, I don't know how to really say much more than that. I woke up on the morning of my band's EP launch thinking it was going to be one of the best days of my life and instead I roll over and Neil's gone. It was horrible.

Following that, a myriad of tributes started flowing in. I remember there were a lot of great videos about "here's the best drum grooves and fills that Neil ever did" type videos. But they weren't the same, no matter how well executed they were. But there was this one, a month or so after the fact, that really nailed the tribute aspect of it all for me

The idea of using this particular song as a tribute was already a great idea. But the execution of it, not going for the rocking version of the song we were already so familiar with, but going for a much more simple and sensitive version of the track with a piano and string ensemble backing. The vocals, nothing like Geddy's but so right for the song at the same time. This felt like the perfect tribute at the time. These lyrics about getting older suddenly resonated so much louder for me as being a response to a fallen hero.

This is actually one of my most favourite covers of any Rush song and it definitely sets the bar real high for everything we're going to cover today.

I had toyed with the idea of splitting the bonus point into a .5 for just being a cover and a full point for doing something original with the source material. I'm not going to do that, but you would definitely receive and deserve every point.

black.midi - 21st Century Schizoid Man
Sent by Buddyhunter1

King Crimson has never really been a top of the list band for me. This song, however, I am familiar enough with the riff of at the very least. Just such a classic vibe to it, the guitar tones and horn interplay are great.

This cover version is evidently based upon the better known radio edit (since the original by KC is over 10 minutes long). In that time, black.midi offer a fairly well played version of the abridged version. While I feel the first solo section is maybe a little long, it's pretty much what was in the original and to be totally fair, Dream Theater with Tony Levin couldn't save that section from being a bit meh for me. I love those really tight stops in the next. section though.

What holds this version back for me is that I feel he goes way too fair with the vocals in a few places. Yeah, again, parts of that were there in the original but I feel it just sticks out a little too much for me here, especially so in the second verse.

While it's very well performed, I also don't know that this cover does too much different to the original to really feel new. I appreciate the extra emphasis on the saxophone in the "main" riff, but I think that's all that really gets me to come to this one more than the original.

Solid effort.but not my favourite thing I've ever heard.

Don't go too far TAC, you're up next!

Tommy Johansson - The Show Must Go On
Sent by TAC

The final song Freddie released before he died (not recorded, but released). The original is a whirlwind of emotion and really is a perfect closer to Queen's main studio albums (I don't really count Made In Heaven personally, though there are a few good tracks on it). Even on death's door, the man delivered a powerhouse of a performance, as did the rest of the band. This is one of my favourite Queen songs. That's why my first impression of this song was what it was. I feel that nothing really meets up with that original recording as a by-product of what the band were going through. Yet, here came Tommy Johansson offering a massive challenge to that perspective.

Let's start beneath the vocal. His guitar tone is exceptional! The drum production is a bit snappier too, which I like. Everything here sounds very well produced and man can he shred a solo while still suiting the track!

Ok, now we can talk about the vocal. He's got a great voice, one that reminds me of Jeff Scott Soto's performance of this song with Sons of Apollo in a way. The high notes are great, the chest range is powerful, it's all there! But for as good as it is, this doesn't hit me the way that Freddie's performance did. With a song like this, I really need to be captivated by the vocals beyond all else and for as much as I like the man's voice, this just doesn't hit me right. Maybe it's a problem of me knowing the song so well, maybe it's just me being a picky bugger, maybe I'm just too demanding". But this one, for as admirable of a job as it does with the original song, still doesn't stack up with it at the end of the day.

For what it is though, taking it away from the cover context. I like it!
