Hear The Colors (Music, Story and Alternative Music Theory)
« on: October 30, 2022, 07:33:00 AM »
Few months ago I released my first album in public on Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music. It is instrumental music, but with dreamy, autobiographic and also kind of philosophical story in form of accompanying text or even "movie" on YouTube that puts all these aspects together for complete experience.

I had no idea how to call the genre so I called it Cinematic as all songs have certain different character and are created to tell the emotional story.

You can find everything and check it out if you are interested on my site: https://hearthecolors.com/story

There is also one more layer to it all which may be interesting for those of you who are interested in music theory and/or composing music (There are quiet a few here I guess  :) ). For a few years I was developing my alternative music theory in terms of harmony based on harmonic frequencies and their mathematical relationships and came up with alternative relationships between harmonic changes of chords mostly major and minor triads, but to a certain degree it works nicely also for diminished and suspended triads.

I assigned six colors to the six possible distances the base harmonic note of the chord can move relatively and created every song on the album without any thinking about scales, keys or functional harmony, but relying only on the chord changes based on two out of six colors (mostly, sometimes I broke the rule, when the music really called for it). As there are fifteen combinations of two out of six colors this process created the fifteen songs on the album and its bonus tracks.

I created the web app where you can experiment with this alternative theory (alternative in terms of complementing standard theories, not trying to replace them) and even record the harmonic idea, export the result to MIDI and use it in your DAW right away as a seed for a song. If any of this interests you, you can find the app and more description here:

Enjoy, and have a nice day! :)

I'm at work, so I''m going to apologize in advance for what might be a bit scattershot.

First and foremost: massive kudos to you. Releasing a record is no small feat!

That said, I think the ambition of your project is downright impressive. The music 'sounds' great, and the visual narrative is a clever touch.

As for the app—I'm a traditionally schooled musician who just so happens to love all sorts of adventurous, ambient music, so (once again) your mindset definitely struck a chord (pun intended!)

I've toyed with the idea of doing something similar to your release, albeit, way less adventurous. I'm a big 'book-on-tape' guy, and I love when there's a soundtrack underneath the narration.

I make my bread in the freelance world, but I've long dreamt of releasing a novel/book/collection. Publishing is not for the faint of heart, so the idea of an audio-book format is way more appealing to me. I've settled on recording some ambient, jazz-adjacent stuff and using it as a bed for some narrated prose.

And, that brings us to the feedback portion of my post...I wonder if it would be worth having an alternate version of your release where you have a narrator reciting over the music. I suppose the music is way more 'busy' than anything I record, so it may not work, but it'd be worth a try.

Otherwise, the odds of me 'watching' an hour long release are about nil. If I can't listen to it while I'm driving, then I can't listen to it.

TL;DR —beyond impressed, my friend.

Thank you!

I totally get not having time watching the whole movie with full concentration so I guess the best format for you while driving is just the album itself. In case you would like mp3s it's also available for free in full with the bonus tracks on my site here: https://hearthecolors.com/music

I was thinking about the narration version, but as you said in many tracks it's way too busy to make sense. However maybe I could try making some shortened narrated version of what is about to happen or what just happened in between tracks and maybe sometimes even within tracks when it is less busy. Thanks for inspiration for that, I will think about it.

Good luck with your audio-book project and thanks once again for your time and feedback I appreciate it very much!

Hi, I've recently released some initial live videos. Maybe these would be more digestable as they are smaller pieces  ;D

This is the most recent one:

I guess this one might be very interesting for you as half of it is improvisation that flows into the song with very intense cinematic atmosphere:

This one is joyful and full of energy:

And here is a short reflective and relaxing piece:

And then in case you would enjoy them, there are some more on my YouTube channel.

Once again thank you very much for any kind of feedback and have a nice day!
