BUDDYHUNTER | Debut Demo Out Now!

BANDCAMP | SOUNDCLOUD | YOUTUBE

Hey folks, I just publicly released my first music under the name Buddyhunter! This is a musical project of mine (currently consisting of nobody but myself) that I would describe as video game music-inspired electronic progressive rock. If you've heard the band Anamanaguchi, this features a similar blend of 8-bit chiptune and rock instrumentation, but I've also drawn influence from all across my musical tastes and the end result is pretty different from their music. It's incredibly nerdy and pretty niche, but I'm sure you'd be able to pick up some influences (either intentional or accidental) from an assortment of DTF-favorite artists. :)

Some background...

I had written some music in my late high school years and during college, but nothing was ever developed very far. The only instrument I can play is guitar, and I'm still not very good at it in all honesty. Writing and recording music always interested me far more than actually playing an instrument, but I figured I had to at least know how to play guitar in order to create the kind of music I was interested in. After graduating from college, several years passed where I didn't work on any music and never even touched my guitar. I had an ambitious idea for a concept album and a few melodies floating around in my head, but I never got around to realizing them. It wasn't until 2019 when I decided that I needed to start making music again (I was inspired by a small project David Maxim Micic put out around that time where he showed how he was able to get decent-sounding music produced using only stock Cubase plugins), so I started playing guitar again, bought a license for Cubase, and began working on that concept album...

The concept album

I know that it's best to start small for your first project. It's good advice; it means you're more likely to actually finish it. It would be pretty foolish for your first project to be an hour-long concept album with recurring motifs and a seamless flow from start to finish... but that was the only idea I had at the time. I knew having a macro framework that interested me, even if overly-ambitious, would make it easier to write songs than not having any prompt to work with. My idea was to have one song for each stereotypical video game "world": Grass, Desert, Sky, Ice, Water, Fire, etc. The music for each of those songs would be stylistically different in order to reflect the tropes and aesthetics for those worlds, built up by countless video game soundtracks over the years. I would then arrange those songs to mirror a "hero's journey" narrative, with a hopeful beginning, a low point in the middle, and a climactic final act which would include a song representing the "Final Boss" of this journey / nonexistent video game that the album is the soundtrack to.

As of this writing, this album is fully-written, and demos of varying levels of quality exist for all 10 of the songs, totaling 62 minutes of music. The biggest missing element is currently vocals; while I was able to record my own guitar tracks and use MIDI instruments to fill out the rest of the production, I can't sing, and no plugin would be able to substitute an actual voice (this ain't no Porter Robinson). This is an album that needed vocals and lyrics, so I plan on looking for a vocalist in the near-future (along with some guest guitarists to do a couple solos). But before that, I figured I should release the demos for a couple instrumental songs from the album. Which, finally, brings us to...

THE DEMOS

1. 1-1 (4:17)
2. Primer (4:41)

These two demos spotlight the more energetic and upbeat sections of the album, being taken from the very beginning (1-1) and right before the final act (Primer). Sound-wise there's a lot more to the full album that isn't covered by these two songs, but hey, gotta save some stuff for later! These are still very much demos / works in progress, but I think I did a pretty decent job with the mixing and production.

I'll use this thread to post more updates about my music, up to the release of the full album, and hopefully beyond! If you check the songs out, I hope you enjoy them. :)

I've only listened to these once, but both of these songs sound really good! I think these are very professional and well-done, though that might be partially comparing these to some demos I've been making. Regardless, well done, and I really liked what I heard and I will be anticipating any future songs you release.

Buddy, about a month ago or so, I finally noticed the links in your sig, and I actually checked out the Bandcamp link.

What I can say is....it's better than Machine Girl. :lol

Props to you for putting it together though.

Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

:rollin I knew it wouldn't be your thing. I at least hope you liked it more than the other Q*bert music you've dropped the needle on. :neverusethis:

There will be some more straightforward-metal cuts on the full album I might force you to listen to. ;)
