I’m adaptable, too.😉  And I enjoyed my ‘escape’ to the pond!😀  Enjoyed yet another ‘Jazz’ listen, with a double of ‘Dreamer’s Ball’. Always been one of my favorites.

It was part of their upcoming acoustic set on tour (to be posted in days). ‘Jealousy’ was not played in concert. In fact, the era of just Freddie and piano ended with the last tour.

Side 2 of Zipper Catches Skin is one of my favorite album sides in his catalog.

And if anyone cares, the opening of If You Can't Beat Them reminded me of this:

Tim has enjoyed toying and testing me throughout this thread both here and via PMs (and I with him 😉).  With the thousand things going on right now, I could only guess a Sweet song here, but I wrote him about ITCBThem personally, and flung ‘School’s Out’ as my second guess.

At least I had the correct artist👍  As soon as I heard the first four notes of ‘Escape’, the light went on!

Always joked that Alice influenced Queen more than any other artist. Just look at some of the similar titles. ‘Under My Wheels’-> ‘Under Pressure’, ‘Killer’-> ‘Killer Queen’, ‘Crazy Little Child’->’Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ etc

If only I still had that spreadsheet.

life willing, I'll get to the next album in a few days....

JAZZ North American Tour, Part 1 Oct 28 - Nov 14th

Once again, Queen tour the States during the cold of late fall/early winter.

Many changes take place:  the ‘Crown Jewel’ lighting rig is gone (on to E.L.O.), replaced by ‘the Pizza Oven’, a hovering monolith that covers the stage. It would rise and lower and change angles throughout.  It was the ‘fifth’ star of the show (or the ‘special guest’ listed in the ads).

For the singalong acoustic set (‘Dreamer’s Ball’, ‘Love Of My Life’, and ’39), a small stage would be lowered from the ceiling to in front of the main stage during the end of ‘Spread Your Wings’.

Five new songs from ‘Jazz’ are part of the setlist, with no old songs added.  The complete versions of ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We Are The Champions’ are now the final encores. Dropped are two long standing fan favorites, ‘Liar’ and ‘Stone Cold Crazy’, along with ‘The Millionaire Waltz’, ‘Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy’, ‘White Man’, ‘The Prophet’s Song’, and ‘My Melancholy Blues.  And though each would be played on rare occasions, the forever encores ‘Big Spender’ and ‘Jailhouse Rock’ have finally been retired.

The showcases of just Freddie and piano are a thing of the past as well.

It is a harder edged set list.  The one remaining piano ballad, ‘Love of My Life’, is changed to what is now the familiar duet of Freddie with Brian on acoustic guitar.
Freddie’s leotards are mostly a thing of the past, and are replaced with his all black leather outfit.  And, John's hair is much shorter  ;)

Dallas Convention Center Dallas, Texas, October 28th, 1978   Attendance: 10,000  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNlIWoZdEEU&t=147s  Quality: B+

The first show, with quite a few flubs.  The videos for 'Bicycle Race' and 'Fat Bottomed Girls' are filmed this day.
We Will Rock You (fast)/ Let Me Entertain You/ If You Can't Beat Them/ Somebody To Love Medley: Death On Two Legs- Killer Queen- Bicycle Race- I'm In Love With My Car- Get Down Make Love- You're My Best Friend /Now I'm Here/ Spread Your Wings/ Dreamer's Ball/ Love Of My Life/ '39/ It's Late/ Brighton Rock/ Fat Bottomed Girls/ Sheer Heart Attack/ Keep Yourself Alive/ Bohemian Rhapsody

Encore 1:   Tie Your Mother Down  Encore 2: We Will Rock You/ We Are The Champions/ God Save The Queen
Complete versions of WWRY and WATC are now played.

‘Sheer Heart Attack’ would soon be moved to the encore.  A rarity this night, as ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ closes the concert proper, and ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ does not.

MARCH 26, 2023 EDIT

Thanks to TAC for the info of part of this concert being made available just a couple of days ago

Cobo Hall, Detroit November 9th or 10th  Attendance: 11,000 +  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXNtDBxAdwo  Grade: A to A+ (other than a slightly harsh cut after TYMD to SHA)

Tie Your Mother Down  Encores:  Sheer Heart Attack / We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions / God Save The Queen

The second release this year of a Detroit show (SHA Tour '75 being the first).  Freddie's voice is a bit off at times (read the review below), but 'so what!'  (plus, he's incorrect in stating that only two songs were performed on the mini drop down stage).   This has the first complete playing of 'Sheer Heart Attack, as a shortened version was always performed during the NOTW tour and prior 'Jazz' shows.

"Thank you.  Goodnight.    See you soon, Detroit."    This gave me goosebumps, as I would see them in Detroit less than two years later! :tup

These shows took place on Thursday and Friday nights. On Saturday, they'd perform at Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, ...my favorite concert of all time.  So this tape is extra extra special.

(Original Detroit comments on page 44)
**************

The following night, and Queen make their second appearance in Kalamazoo.

article in queenlive.ca provided by yours truly

I'm going to bore you with some details first.  We arrived that Saturday at 5pm or so for that 8pm show.  Both entrances on the north and south sides already had thousands in line, since it was General Admission.  We grabbed a six pack, went up near the front of one line, about fifteen feet from the doors, and stood on the curb and chatted with people on the sidewalk.  At 7pm, everyone was ordered off the grass, so we were pushed right into the line.  Lucky for us, we thought.

When the doors opened, there was a frightening surge forward.  I remember having my arms pinned against my chest and shuffling my feet forward as little as I could as I was pushed ahead, with my friend next to me.  About a minute later, all doors at that entrance were opened, and we finally had some space.

Cincinnati, Riverfront Coliseum, with eleven deaths at The Who concert taking place a year later due to a similar type of 'stampede'.  That  could have been us in Kalamazoo.
******
Moving on to more cheerful notes.....first, thank goodness for WLAV-FM in Grand Rapids.  Almost every Friday night at 11pm the station would play albums just released, or sneak previews of those still not on the shelves.  In August, one week before its release, they spun  ‘Pieces of Eight’ by Styx on the night before I would see them perform.

The same held true for ‘Jazz’, as it would not be released until the 14th.  Once again, I had a blank 8 track at the ready.  Listened to it again that night, and on the way down to Kzoo with my best friend.  Hearing it certainly helped eliminate a lot of confusion of what at times could be a confusing show right from the start.  Having missed the NOTW the prior year, and with the playbilll having ‘With Special Guest’, when the ‘thunderbolts and lightning’ tape started, followed by the first chords of the fast version of ‘We Will Rock You’, it took a few seconds to realize it WAS Queen on stage!

From the songs, the band, their front man, the lighting, etc..... this remains the #1 concert of my life.

Some have come close, but nothing will ever top it.

*************
Providence Civic Center, Providence, Rhode Island, November 14th     Attendance: 14,000   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkNJeZrHriA&t=219s   Quality: A+++

We Will Rock You (fast) / Let Me Entertain You / Somebody To Love / If You Can't Beat Them Medley: Death On Two Legs - Killer Queen - Bicycle Race - I'm In Love With My Car - Get Down Make Love  - You're My Best Friend / Now I'm Here / Spread Your Wings / Dreamer's Ball / Love Of My Life / '39 / It's Late / Brighton Rock / Fat Bottomed Girls / Keep Yourself Alive / The March Of The Black Queen (intro) / Bohemian Rhapsody / Tie Your Mother Down

Encore 1: Sheer Heart Attack     Encore 2: We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions / God Save The Queen

(this was provided by the family of Dan Lampanski, in spite of the different name now listed by Ryan Newton)

Three days after Kalamazoo, and barely topping the Detroit ’77 News of the World show, this became my favorite bootleg of all time when made available in 2017.

Problems with the lighting rig are commented on by Freddie after YMBF  as being ‘f*cked’.

Unlike the album version, Freddie plays piano during both instrumentals in ‘If You Can’t Beat Them’.  This would be a surprisingly good rockin' concert song, along with the two opening ones, ‘Now I’m Here’, ‘It’s Late’, ‘Keep Yourself Alive’, ‘Tie Your Mother Down’, and ‘Sheer Heart Attack’.

‘Jazz’ was released this day in the States. This is the band’s fifth show in six days (two shows in the tropics of Detroit, Kalamazoo, and Boston preceding this night). The lead singer's voice is not as strong as it would be in the upcoming NYC shows, but Freddie on a somewhat off night is better than what most had to offer on their best.

the remaining '78 shows will be posted tomorrow...

Love the concert experience story Joe!

Man, how astute!  :tup  Short story long....it was white with the black 'outline' of the crest on through the ANATO tour, black with white outline during the ADATR tour, and Frank was on the drum head up through the Jazz North American tour.  The LP cover would replace him during the European segment.

Concert experience:  as I typed it, I felt like I was reliving that panic.  Of course, once we made it in, we kind of laughed, ran to the restroom, then rushed to grab (since this is a hockey arena) 'blue line' seats closest to the stage on Brian's side, about three rows back.  Entering the arena was nothing like that two years earlier, or two weeks earlier for Jethro Tull.

Or years later for Alice Cooper, Yes, Van Halen for the F*CK tour, or Queensryche on 'Promised Land' at the still standing 'stadium'.

Enjoying the Judas Priest parking lot so far ...

JAZZ No. American Tour '78 Part 2

the slumbering Pizza Oven before a show

Plenty of Jazz tour tapes were made available over the past decade.  Depending on preferences regarding performance, the crowd, the quality of the recording, or your location, there's a lot to choose from.  And pictures throughout on queenlive.ca

Madison Square Garden New York City, November 17th   Attendance: 20,000   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1Hm5rTddG0&t=3212s  Quality: A/A-/B  Raucous crowds both nights, with plenty of scantily clad women on stage riding bicycles during one song.

this was the best Jazz tour bootleg available to me in the 90s until a handful of years ago in such good quality..  .  The taper somewhat ruins (or enhances) the experience by clapping against his body where the recorder is at times.  😀
****************
Maple Leaf Gardens Toronto, December 3rd   Attendance: 16,500  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArI2VLdQuCY&t=2764s  Quality: A-

Chicago Stadium, Chicago, Illinois, December 7th     Attendance: 18,000   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9tcWyiHLfQ&t=3875s    Quality: A
Yet another high quality tape with a high energy Windy City crowd.
**************
Pacific Coliseum Vancouver, December 14th   Attendance: 17,500   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40ZRhFmdHTc     Quality: A
If only Freddie could have hit some of the same high notes that some of the females near the taper reached this night. ;)
**************
Alameda County Coliseum Arena, Oakland, California, December 16th    Attendance: 15,000    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BMIR2iFRNY   Quality: B
The reviewer describes this as the best show on the tour.  It is one of the most enthusiastic crowds.

Inglewood, California at the LA Forum for three nights, the final night adding 'Big Spender' and 'Jailhouse Rock' on as a third encore before heading home for the holidays (and a chance for Freddie to rest his voice).

Former Alice Cooper guitarist Keri Kelli's first concert as a 10-year-old was seeing Queen at one of these shows, and recalled it to be what inspired him to play guitar. queenlive.ca

Also appeared in the movie, ‘Shaun Of The Dead’

Bobby Olivier of Billboard attributes the initial rebirth of Queen's "Don't Stop Me Now" to its appearance in the film, which "introduced it to a new generation of listeners", saying: "Perhaps the most famous scene from Shaun of the Dead features "Don't Stop Me Now" which blares from a pub jukebox while stars Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Kate Ashfield bash a zombie with pool cues to the song's hurtling beat".[37] The moment had been Wright's idea, as he loves Queen and "had the idea of playing Don't Stop Me Now – one of the most positive, exciting, happy tunes ever – over a scene of extreme violence".[7] Pegg explained that the fight in the pub was choreographed to the song even before it had been cleared to be used in the film, so they wrote to Brian May and begged to use it.[7]

For a bit of a different listen, …minus drums   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4_kqs0M-wI

minus guitar    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jFGNiO2pI4

Certainly a late bloomer, and the amount of views and listens were more than surprising.  Understatement.

JAZZ EUROPEAN TOUR ‘79 (or sometimes called the 'Live Killers Tour')

The setlist is almost the same as in the States.  ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ would be added, while ‘If You Can’t Beat Them’ and ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’ would often alternate. 'Big Spender' and 'Jailhouse Rock' would make occasional appearances.

Westfalenhalle Dortmund, West Germany, January 21st  Attendance: 16,000    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWO3A176OLU   Quality: B+/B-
The fourth overall, and first available tape of the European tour.  Even with the three weeks off after the States, Freddie’s voice is mostly shot.

Deutschlandhalle, Berlin, January 24th   Attendance: 11,000    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwBeciInX3M    Quality: A-
Freddie’s voice is still off, but better than the prior show. And it is a high quality recording.

Sporthalle Cologne, West Germany February 1st, Attendance: 8,000   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yP4Qb4uNN48   Quality: A-/B+

Slovenia, February 7th

MUNICH February 11th  German documentary  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQ-Qzby13XA
17:38 begins the concert footage. At 21:14 begins some bantering by Freddie with the crowd, some good live footage of ‘Now I’m Here’ (with the back and forth between Freddie and the crowd)

29:20, with the German translation during the operatic part of BoRhap 😊 but it has one of the best film footages of when the band reappears during the song.
The ending of this video includes complete versions of ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ ‘We Will Rock You’, and ‘We Are The Champions’ (check out from the 40 minute mark til the end, especially the last 20 seconds of Freddie in front of the drum kit as the final notes of WATC are played, and the Pizza Oven descends).  And an almost a complete GSTQ…..combine this after the upcoming Paris video, and one gets to experience visually of most of what a Queen concert was like during this tour.

That’s why I hold Kalamazoo ’78 on a pedestal.

Three nights in Paris conclude the tour.

The longest Queen concert ever at 2 1/2 hours.  There are three encores, with ‘Big Spender’ / ‘Jailhouse Rock’ played second.  ‘Dead On Time’ is included in the ‘Brighton Rock’ solo.  Freddie’s voice is still in rough shape, but it’s still a good show for many reasons.

The PARIS video   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjL3hHVDONc
Though incomplete, it is the most video footage available of any ‘Jazz’ tour show.
INTRO / We Will Rock You (Fast) / Let Me Entertain You / Somebody To Love / Fat Bottomed Girl / You're My Best Friend / Now I'm Here / Don't Stop Me Now / If You Can Beat Him / Spread Your Wings / Dreamer Ball / Bohemian Rhapsody / Tie Your Mother Down / Sheer Heart Attack

The only video of the start of a ‘Jazz’ tour show (Remember….’Never miss the beginning of a Queen concert!’  :tup)

Pretty good visuals throughout, especially of 'Bohemian Rhapsody' during the operatic and rock parts.  'Tie Your Mother Down' is good because it shows how the lights were panning the audience at various times. It also shows Freddie going completely bonkers and tipping over a speaker at the end of ‘Sheer Heart Attack’.

I remember a friend sending this to me two decades ago.  The Berlin ending I watched for the first time a few weeks ago.

Enjoy!

during the final chords of 'We Are The Champions', Lyon France.  Six songs from this concert would appear on their next album.

Joe, The Paris footage is nice. I was hoping to catch a glimpse of the small stage that is mentioned earlier that is lowered from the ceiling. I didn't see it.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

All I can do is assume that it was not used in Europe, or only at select shows.

The December 3rd, 1978 show in Toronto has two pictures of it being lowered (a friend Tracy is even mentioned).  I noticed some side views from Rotterdam from January 29 that shows them at the front of the stage, with the cat walk visible.  The lowered 'B' stage would cover it had it been used.

I also noticed in the video, that Freddie is leaning against his piano at times during 'Dreamer's Ball'. Trust me, no piano was on the B stage ;)

(for those not familiar, go to   'queenlive.ca' , then 'Select A Year' , then scroll down to your show choice)

Thanks, Tim.  I had thought of putting up the pics....

That stage was just one of the many things that made it such a unique show.  First, with the lighting rig covering the stage (not knowing it was the rig), one didn't know it was Queen playing for the first few seconds as the rig tilted up (remember that the playbills clearly stated ‘And Special Guest’).  Hell, 'Get Down Make Love' was interesting visually, as the rig lowered over an almost dark stage during the instrumental while Brian and John bent over motionless during that time.  Then the rig rose up and just before the whistle and final chorus was played, all of the white lights shined onto the stage. And it stayed that way for‘You’re My Best Friend’…which seemed to be played as a polite afterthought.

And, who in the hell else played timpanis during their drum solos?!?

QUEEN JAZZ TOUR ‘79 Japan

The setlist remains basically the same as the European tour.  Oddly, it would not be until April 20th that ‘Teo Torriate’ would be added (‘Spread Your Wings’ being dropped).  It is obviously enjoyed by all the crowds who sing along to it each night.

Nippon Budokan Tokyo, April 4th, Attendance: 4,000    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSLFD-byTHU&t=5734s      Quality: A
Another off night for Freddie, but a top quality recording by ‘Mr. Peach’.
******************
Festival Hall Osaka, April 20th,    Attendance: 3,000  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3kkH_zJsy0   Quality: A
Since they did not play in Japan for the NOTW tour, they decide to start the show with the WWRY slow segment for thirty seconds, with Freddie and Brian at opposite sides of the stage. This would continue on for the rest of the tour.  Nice touch.
*******************
Nippon Budokan Tokyo, April 23rd, Attendance: 14,000  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nr9AMh4EfTM&t=6s  Quality: A
****************************
Nippon Budokan Tokyo, Japan April 24th, Attendance: 14,000    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irHnn9_urBk      Quality: A
Another high quality Mr. Peach recording, another night of subpar vocals from Freddie.  The picture(s) for what would become the cover of ‘Live Killers’ are taken this night
*****************
Makomanai Ice Arena, Sapporo, May 6th, Attendance: 11,000  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLfgB3jzAX0&t=6405s  Quality: B+
A singalong of ‘Liar’ is added as part of ‘Now I’m Here’, and a nice extended version of ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’.  ‘Jailhouse Rock’ is played just before ‘Sheer Heart Attack’.

Tonight marks the last time they'd play the slow "We Will Rock You' at the beginning of the show on tape. These are also the final performances of ‘Bicycle Race’, ‘Dreamer's Ball’, ‘It's Late’, and the full ‘Keep Yourself Alive’. ‘Brighton Rock’ would be dropped from the setlist as well (the solo would always exist), but it would be heard at least once on the Crazy tour.

Queen’s longest world tour concludes, finally giving Freddie a chance to rest his vocal chords.  He would come back months later, sounding stronger and better than ever.

From various locations of the European ‘Jazz’ tour.  A real shame that ‘Somebody To Love’ was not included (never had a live version of it until the 90s from the Montreal ‘81 VHS tape).  Same for ‘It’s Late.  They should have released them as a double A-side 45 single at the same time.  That would have sold well.

I had hoped that 'Live Killers' would have been polished during the time of all the reissues in 2011, or in a 40th anniversary release., with a complete and correct tracklist, which would have added ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’, ‘If You Can’t Beat Them’, ‘It’s Late’, and ‘Somebody To Love’.  Instead, there was no reissue or anniversary release

As is, there are better sounding live releases of various bands out there.  Hell, there’s better sounding bootlegs from this tour!  But…cranked up, that’s how the band sounded to me eight months earlier, so I’m not going to complain too much.

Highlights were Side Two and Four, as well as ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’, and certainly ‘Spread Your Wings’.  And all of the audience participation throughout.

I LOVED this record when I got it (not in real time; later, probably mid-to-late '80's, whenever it first came out on CD) and love it now. This is a great record, and SCREAMS for the UFO Strangers treatment (a live box of all the complete shows that went into the final release).

I'd be first in line for that.

So I bought a Used vinyl copy while I was in college at this awesome used record store. I swear it was in some dude's enlarged shed behind his house, but I used to go there all the time. He actually moved into an actual store, but it was never quite the same.

And being totally serious, I don't think I ever listened to more than Side 1. Queen could just never hold my attention.

I bought the CD after I met my wife, but again, I just don't remember ever listening to it. :lol

Spotify streams..

Sheer Heart Attack....418k
We Will Rock You....570k
We Are the Champions....622k
God Save the Queen....362k

Once again, the song I can't remember ever hearing has the most streams.

And for as many streams as the studio version of Bohemian Rhapsody has, I thought this version was surprisingly low, even at 971k.

But it shows that this album is not popular with the kids. :lol

Oh, and I know why I never got past side 1. I probably shut it off with IILWMC and GDML back to back. I never liked those songs.

Honestly, IILWMC actually isn't that bad musically, except for the fact that it's called I'm In Love With My Car. :lol

Seems like people people are going to be pretty divided on this one, which I guess is nothing new around here.

I think this is where Queen officially lost me, and it had been iffy for a while.  Those early albums were so well produced, sounded so amazing with the layers of vocals and guitars, that I really didn't feel that they translated well to a live setting.  As always, my opinion might have been more forgiving if I were watching video of the live performances, but as it was, all we had was the audio, and I just couldn't get into it.  I thought that fast version of We Will Rock You was weird.  Not bad, but I just thought "Why?"  And I really do not like medleys.  They just seem like dumb excuses to play parts of songs and tease the audience, when I would always prefer to hear songs in their entirety.  Pretty sure I never got past Side One.

I should probably revisit this one, since I've found considerably more respect for live Queen since then, but at the time, nah.  It just didn't work for me.
