Thank you.

Well, it only took me two weeks to polish up my prior post.   :D

I had completed most of the Word docs for the very brief recaps for Queen+Paul Rodgers and Queen+Adam Lambert a while back, and will post soon.

Over the past three months, we've had the specter of cancer hanging over this household.  The results of an invasive surgery on my wife came back negative yesterday. Phew!

So, let's raise a toast to Mrs. DA!  :tup

The '46664' project was conceived by Nelson Mandela as a platform to raise awareness of the AIDS virus and raise funds to help it's prevention, as the disease was ravaging South Africa. '46664' was his prison number whilst imprisoned on Robben Island. The project brought together many musicians, including Queen, Dave Stewart, Bono and Bob Geldof, as well as some modern pop stars and African musicians.

Certainly, a much different reception was given to Brian and Roger in regards to their appearance and show this time in South Africa, as opposed to the Queen tour in 1986.

QUEEN + JOHN FARHAM   WE WILL ROCK YOU

Released:  July 2003

Now, for a bit of fun.  John Farnham worked with Queen to produce a new version of "We Will Rock You" for the 2003 Rugby World Cup, released on his greatest hits album, "One Voice". Media reports of Queen asking Farnham to join the band were subsequently denied by both Brian May and Farnham.

AUDIO   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vP6O5hCN1M8

********
Farnham's voice is somewhat similar to Brian on this release.  This version is a minute longer than the original, with added vocals and a damn good (kick axe!) instrumental that really works, and gives it a very 'fresh' feel.  Definitely worth a listen or two.    :tup

QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS

Brian and Paul had worked on a couple of collaborations eons before.  The origins of the collaboration came when Brian  played at the Fender Strat Pack concert in 2004. Now for the first time, he joined Paul Rodgers for a rendition of Free's classic, "All Right Now". After this Brian spoke of a chemistry between the two of them. Following this, Brian invited Paul to play with Queen at their induction to the UK Music Hall of Fame. Again citing a new excitement with Rodgers, the three announced they would tour in 2005. The tour originally was meant only to include Europe and the 46664 concerts of that year.  However at the end of the European tour, some dates in the USA and Japan were added. In 2006, a full scale US tour was undertaken. (wiki)

Q+PR would be together for three years, before a mutual parting of the ways.

I enjoyed them for what it was, which was a chance to see Brian and Roger with a big name lead singer.  The Ferrari was back, revved up, and the machine was still as powerful.  The driver just wasn't always a perfect fit.  Then again, look who he was trying to 'replace'.

******************

As good a live album and introduction to this partnership as this may be, it’s often noted that it was unfair to Paul, who is singing a set of primarily Queen tunes. Comparisons to Freddie were inevitable, and most reviews ranged from fair to good.  I especially enjoyed the moments when Roger was sharing or full lead on vocals, the short drum solo, and a full version for the first time of ‘I’m In Love With My Car’.  The first time in almost two decades that Brian’s guitar solo is on a ‘Queen’ release, and ending it with his solo instrumental ‘Lost Horizion’ is one of a handful of true highlights.

It was good to finally hear the music performed live on songs such as ‘I Want It All’ and ‘The Show Must Go On’…..it’s just that Paul wasn’t exactly the right fit on these and few others, and his extra warbling at times was a detriment.

I also thought it would have been nice to have something ‘new’ so to speak to the set list:  Brian’s ‘Driven By You’, Roger’s ‘Man On Fire’, and I really would have enjoyed Bad Company’s ‘Movin’ On’.

Oh, and the artwork  was lazy and unappealing.

I love Paul Rodgers.

I always thought highly of him.  'Bad Company' is a top 100 album.  I was so glad he hopped on board.

After the European tour, they took a three month break, and did two shows in the States (New Jersey and Hollywood) before playing six shows in Japan.  That sold out show at the Meadowlands Arena was such an incredible day.  The first arena show for 'Queen' since '82.  The tailgating in the north parking lot around Jacky Smith's group, meeting dozens of UK and American fans in person (knowing many by their 'handles' for eons), the show (about ten feet from the catwalk on Brian's side), tailgating afterwards, partying in the hotel lobby til 2AM.....  basically.....because Paul had the nads to give it a go.

I'll always be grateful to him for this.

Oh, and if you 'love' Paul Rodgers, you have to be absolutely thrilled with 'his' songs.....and that great backing band he has on this ;) :tup

There’s a couple of OK songs, but this is basically sounds like a Paul Rodgers album, with a Roger LV thrown in.  No LVs by Brian (and only three written by him). I had truly expected many songs to have shared LVs.  Roger has six writing credits.

For some reason, no bass player was brought in.  Brian and Paul shared those duties, which hurts the end product.  It also just kind of sounds like a bunch of middle age rockers doing most things 'by the numbers'.

We listened to this a few times when it was released.

'Small' is a very moving highlight.  'We Believe', and 'Some Things That Glitter' are the highlights that I remember.  'Cosmos Rockin' and 'C-lebrity' are OK (Taylor Hawkins making yet another collaboration with Brian and Roger).

Oh, and again, the artwork is lame, boring, and very unoriginal.  And.....who are those tiny, itsy bitsy people on the front and back covers?

Re: QUEEN Discography - QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS The Cosmos Rocks LP
« Reply #1419 on: December 21, 2022, 07:36:09 AM »
When the Cosmos TV series premiered on public television in 1980, its score consisted of a variety of music from all over the world. Considering the non-commercial scope of the series any music could be used, free of charge. The variety of the selected music ranged from classical and ethnical music, to Vangelis' and Jean-Michel Jarre's synthesized pieces taken from their seventies albums.

The liner notes of "The music of Cosmos" - Collector's Edition explain:

"The musical content of COSMOS seemed to create a message of it's own - almost as though it were the collective intelligence of the universe pleasantly calling our attention to the lessons at hand. [this]... expresses, simply and eloquently, our intentions in selecting music for the thirteen hours of the COSMOS television series. As with the golden phonograph record placed on board the Voyager spacecraft, bearing a sampling of "Earth's Greatest Hits", we included a variety of musical traditions and genres. Many hours were spent exploring the music of unfamiliar composers and performers, and considering  how old favorites would enhance the thoughtful words and rich visuals of the series. Finding the music for COSMOS was in itself a voyage of discovery. We hope you will share in that experience, enjoy the music of this album and then sample the original works from which these pieces were excerpted. It was always our intention in COSMOS that the images and the music would be as important as the words, and that the series would speak to that part of us in which the heart and mind are one"

(Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan and Steven Soter)

My wife was a fan of the 'Cosmos' TV series, and bought the vinyl soundtrack when it was released.  She has had the cover framed on her office wall since I've known her.

Does anyone see any similarities to the Q+PR studio album title and cover? :D :D :D

The remaining track, 'Wishing Well', which was performed before 'Shooting Star', appears to be unreleased.

A concert movie was produced by NCM Fathom and Disney’s Hollywood Records. It was shown in U.S. movie theatres one night only – Thursday, 6 November 2008.

Q+PR was asked to headline the free concert Don't Let AIDS Ruin Your Life, Recorded at the 'Life Must Go On' concert

from queenpedia:  Mere weeks before their tour was set to start; the concert was a way of promoting safe sex practices and raising awareness of AIDS, a rising concern in the Ukraine, and was supported by the Mercury Phoenix Trust.  Released nine months after the event, and well after the announcement that Q+PR had disbanded.
One Vision was brought out of mothballs for the first time since 1986, and Shooting Star was played live for the first time. Perhaps the biggest and most welcome surprise came after Brian's guitar solo, when he and Freddie (by way of the video screen and the original audio recording) duetted on Bijou; second to this was Roger's unique drum solo, where he and Danny Miranda fooled around on an upright electric bass for a few minutes (slipping in references to Another One Bites The Dust and Under Pressure) before Roger sat down at a basic drum set of bass and snare drums and hi-hat. As he started his solo, roadies would assemble a much larger kit around him as Roger showed that he hadn't lost any of his chops."

This was released after Brian, Roger, and Paul amicably parted ways. I don’t own this, and have never heard a second of it. Some day, one day……..

So...I listened to Queen And Paul Rogers for the first time ever today.
Return Of The Champions is the only thing they really have on Spotify.
@ Joe, the streams for each song average about 550k, with Bohemian Rhapsody topping out at 783k and Can't Get Enough bringing up the rear at 298k.

Anyway, the sound on this album isn't very good. I pulled up the Ukraine concert on youtube though and  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Wow! It sounds and looks amazing. I dropped the needle blindly and it landed on The Show Must Go On..incredible. I had always though Paul Rogers was a curious choice to collaborate with, but he really pulls it off and is very cool.
It's heartbreaking to see those happy people in the crowd.

I just read Glenn Hughes' autobiography, and apparently when Ian Gillan left Deep Purple, they actually asked Paul Rogers to join them. He obviously did not, and started Bad Company instead.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

I'm with TAC, I listened to Queen + PR for the first time today via the youtube link and it was awesome. I really liked Paul a lot more than I thought I would.

Thanks for the Spotify recap, Tim. :tup  And the Deep Purple story.  Interesting.

I finally listened to most of the Ukraine concert over the past couple of days.  Yes, it is very good!  A bit disappointing that both OV and TYMD were shortened to start.  Doing TSMGO early in the show helped Paul, as his voice didn't cut it later in the set during the 'Champions' show.  My personal gripe was that I just wish he didn't add extra vocals that weren't on the original.  But it was a good show, especially the informal stuff on the catwalk for ''39, LOML, 'Car', etc.

I wonder what that area looks like now.  I know missiles landed in and around that center this year >:( :censored

QUEEN + ADAM LAMBERT

There was (is) controversy regarding Van Halen or Van Hagar.  It's the same or worse regarding '+ Adam Lambert'.  I'll just say that the kid (hell, he's 40 now) has the pipes and the range to do Freddie's vocals justice.  His fanatic Glambert fans are generally annoying as all hell, but he also has had the nads now for ten years to step in and do the songs justice.  He didn't try to step into Freddie's shoes, is in a no win situation, but his live performances are quite stunning.

My wife will always tell you which studio version of 'Too Much Love Will Kill You' is better:  Freddie and Queen's, there is no comparison to Brian's. :D  She's seen Q+AL four times now.  And is looking forward to yet another 'one last one' soon.

A couple of couples spent the weekend on their 'tour' of the tour for the show at Columbia MD's Merriweather Pavilion.  It was our 'thank you' and 'goodbye' concert.  Not the best view from the lawn, but the sound was as loud and good as ever, 'Love Kills' was superb, and the show was fun and entertaining as hell.

I mean....I got to hear the taped intro of 'Procession' again :metal  And 'Stone Cold Crazy' again after thirty years, and 'I Want It All', and.....

It was a worthwhile experience......

Their 'News of the World' anniversary show, complete with great animation of Frank the Robot.  Sadly, they dropped most of the NOTW songs by the time we saw them at Madison Square Garden with some friends.  Thanks guys, yet again, for a great show and all the memories throughout all the years.

Couldn't turn down yet another trip to MSG for their two night sold out visit.  Sitting with a dozen of our Long Island friend's friends at the Tic Toc Diner on 34th and 8th before the show, wearing my 'Hot Space' tour shirt (which was a good 10-15 years older than many of fans in attendance :D) This is the one where the ground just shook and shook after the operatic part of BoRhap.  Of all tunes, they brought 'Machines' out of mothballs.  And it was pretty damn good.

Again, anything with the taped intro of 'Procession' has got to be good.  It's a good show, good sound, mostly good video (minus the ever annoying crowd shots), and it shows they made a good choice of a singer.

oh, but yet again......who continues to design their horrible cover art? :tdwn

After the release of the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' movie, they decided on doing a one off rendition of their 'Live Aid' performance in Australia.  A pity that this show wasn’t a bonus disc.  Not including ‘I Want It All’, ‘These Are The Days Of Our Lives’ etc was extremely disappointing, ….as well as a full version of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

And....there's no Pavlovian 'God Save The Queen' tape to end the show.

As is….the camera work isn’t too ‘squirrelish’, and it was way more enjoyable than we’d expected.

The artwork continues the failing marks over the past two decades.

We're glad we got it .....as a gift! ;)

« Reply #1428 on: December 27, 2022, 09:42:25 AM »
Being a 'glutton for punishment', in the next few days I'll be posting ALL of the Queen and Queen+ album releases for this century.  That includes all of the reissues, the compilations, and those with Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert.  Page references when mentioned prior will be listed (Wembley '86 released in 2003, the BBC 'On Air' sessions for example) and most will be a simple post with title, release date, and song listings.

Many (most?) were money grabs and semi 'insults' until some good/great hidden or forgotten gems were released.  I feel bad for the completists.  So glad we gave up on that eons ago.  And, as many have said, it is surprising that 'QUEEN FARTS' was never released as a money grab.  Then again, that would probably chart in dozens of countries and go Gold or Platinum in the UK.  ;)

It'll be a whirlwind, but I cannot wait to discuss the demos and polished demos of last months 'The Miracle' collectors edition.  It was hell to see it sit under our tree for weeks unopened.  Yes, it could have had more demos included.  But....whoda thunk that I would actually ever enjoy 'Party'?!?!?!  :o  :D :tup

And then, I'll finally be done!

Oh ... that's right, there's still more Brian and Roger stuff to post after that.  ;)

The disc for GH III is now a light blue, but all tracks are the same UK listings as previously released on:

Greatest Hits   page 19     https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=57201.630

Greatest Hits II     page 33    https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=57201.1120

and Queen + Greatest Hits III  page 39   https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=57201.1330

It truly amazes me that the certifications and sales totals are for just this release!  Greatest Hits went 23x Platinum in the UK on its own (Platinum in the States), GH II 13x Platinum in the UK (Platinum in the States), and GH III 2x Platinum in the UK.

The amount of people that bought the same old thing(s) in a slightly different (and more expensive) package is just crazy!

And....just call me and the wife crazy!

2004

JEWELS
Released:  January 28, 2004, Japan (EMI)

Charts: #1 in Japan

Certifications:  ONE MILLION units sold!

I Was Born To Love You / We Will Rock You / We Are The Champions / Don't Stop Me Now / Too Much Love Will Kill You / Let Me Live / You're My Best Friend /
Under Pressure / Radio Ga Ga / Somebody To Love / Killer Queen / Another One Bites The Dust / Crazy Little Thing Called Love / Flash /
The Show Must Go On / Bohemian Rhapsody
*******
A Japan only 24 bit digitally remastered compilation CD featuring extensive liner notes in Japanese and obi-strip.

It was released alongside a DVD that bears the same name, which includes the official videos of the songs that make up the album plus two bonus tracks, "I'm Going Slightly Mad" and "Let Me Live (Photo Gallery)"

Another basic rehash with surprising sales numbers. I will admit to being tempted to buy it, as the Japanese remasters were always a grade or two above the UK offerings.

JEWELS I and II

Released:  October 3, 2005, Japan (EMI)

Jewels & Jewels II Japan Tour 2005 special limited edition 2-CD box set , to coincide with the Queen + Paul Rodgers tour.

Let's see.....what market can we fleece yet again this time?  Hey, it's the same two CDs we just released here, let's slap on a new cover, print up some of the Jewel I versions, and package it with all the Jewels II ones that didn't sell.  And mention it being a limited edition to the completists world wide.

Yup....sounds good to me.

Something that should have been a 'must buy' item that yet again failed miserably IMO.  We passed.  Due to how that album was recorded, we knew there would be little to no demos available.  Some polished up live offerings from the era, and a complete live 'BoRhap' from '77 would have been nice.  We  did find the audio DVD for five bucks at a neighbor's garage sale a few years later.
