Say something positive about your least favorite DT song(s)
« on: January 06, 2022, 07:58:37 PM »
Remember when Trump and Clinton were asked to say something positive about the other during a debate. How wonderfully awkward that was!

So, I was revisiting a couple of my least favorite DT songs after seeing them on the Top 100 list, and thought "surely there is something in this song I like!"

The Dark Eternal Night:
1) The 'Drifting beyond all time" vocal part is cool and dare I say fun to sing along with.
2) The guitar riff at the end.

Constant Motion
1) The instrumental part after the second verse around 4:00-4:30 is pretty solid.

Cool idea!

First song that came to mind

Anna Lee:
-"trying to believe, the scars unseen, tears wash clean" line is beautiful.
- the piano intro is nice.

Wow I love Anna Lee.  To have it as a worst is interesting.  Certainly not a metal or prog song so I guess it’s understandable.

Honor Thy Father: I listened to the instrumental demo of it for the first time recently, and I gotta say, that version is pretty good! I suppose that makes it more evident that the lyrics are really the only problem I have with the song.

The middle part of the Room 137 guitar solo is cool (around 2:35-2:50).

Took the words right out of my mouth there.

Well that's funny because I really like You, not Me

It has nothing to do with the style of the song, it's a fine song, just the one I have the least desire to listen to.

I like that Prophets of War eventually ends.

I also honestly appreciate that it’s on a pretty bad album. If it happened to be on a really good album, I’d be exposed to it more.

In fact…I appreciate that fact so much, that it almost seems to make Out of Reach and Viper King (my 2nd and 3rd worst) even worse…because they are tarnishing an otherwise good album.

I'm not crazy about Outcry (definitely don't hate it, but it's very rare that I want to listen to it), but I do really like the HEY! HEY! part for the crowd at the end.

Damn right.  Also, I'm sure they meant well (which is about the only positive thing I can think to say about that song and The Great Debate and New Millennium).

I'm glad that You Not Me was released in the CD age.

It would've been a bitch to have to FF through it on a cassette.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Winger Theater Forums........or WTF.  ;D
TAC got a higher score than me in the electronic round? Honestly, can I just drop out now? :lol

The live version of Space Dye Vest on Breaking the Fourth Wall (and as performed on the entire Along for the Ride tour, for that matter) was outstanding.

The riff and other instrumentation under the chorus on Prophets of War are VERY cool.

Through Her Eyes: Jordan's piano melodies are very nice.

Act Of Faythe: See above.

Ministry Of Lost Souls: At least they tried going for a different vibe for a longer song. Petrucci's solo at the end is pretty good (though The Best Of Times did this kind of outro better).

I really like all of Syatematic Chaos except for the droney Repentance. The guitar solo is the only thing I like about that song.
As far as Viper King, technically it's a fun bonus track which I really like. I think it would translate very well live!  Out of Reach would also come across cool in a live setting too.

I've gotten into arguments for suggesting this here, but... I have good news about Viper King and tarnishing the Distance Over Time album, which is that it's not part of the album.

I’ll go album by album

-Light Fuse and Get Away: While it’s one of the band’s weaker songs, there’s nothing so bad that makes it stand out as truly awful.
-Surrounded: There’s a lot of good things I can say, as Images and Words is probably Dream Theater’s best collection of songs put to a single record, even though it’s third in my overall band album ranking, but I’ll highlight the song’s extremely underrated solo.
-Space Dye Vest: It’s moody and atmospheric in a way that no other Dream Theater song is save for maybe Disappear.
-You Not Me: The chorus is actually pretty good out of context.
-Regression: It’s not really a song so it automatically lands at the bottom of its album’s standings, but it’s the perfect intro for the incredible music that follows.
-Misunderstood: Shorten or completely cut that outro and this is a top 50 Dream Theater song.
-Endless Sacrifice: I appreciate John Petrucci writing a thank you note to his wife at the end of the song, as most bands and artists tend to ignore the tremendous sacrifices their families make to allow them to live out their dream.
-I Walk Beside You: This is probably Dream Theater’s best attempt at a straightforward pop rock song.
-Prophets of War: There are a lot of cool ideas in this song. The Queen influenced harmonies, the sequenced keys, the fan led chanting, this is Portnoy’s finest hour in the producer’s chair.
-A Rite of Passage: The solo section is really fun here. I’m actually a fan of the Bebot solo, and Petrucci’s solo in this one doesn’t get talked about nearly enough.
-Build Me Up, Break Me Down: Here it is. My least favorite Dream Theater song. With that said, the harmonized solo is cool, and I love the outro.
-The Bigger Picture: The keyboards are absolutely huge on this.
-The Walking Shadow: Out of the context of The Astonishing I’m not a fan, but it does a great job driving the narrative of the story.
-Room 137: The Beatles influenced harmonies are a lot of fun.
-Transcending Time: The soft piano parts are absolutely beautiful.

I’ll go album by album

That could be fun.

- The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun has a solid chorus.
- Another Day -- it's a really good song that just happens to be the least strong song on an amazing album.
- The Mirror...hmmm...ummm...good guitar tone, I guess.
- New Millennium -- the very first time I heard it, I thought the intro sounded cool.
- Regression -- it's an excellent way to open the album (see above re Another Day).
- I honestly can't think of a single positive thing to say about The Great Degate (beyond my "they meant well" comment in my prior response).
- Honor Thy Father...see above re The Mirror.
- Never Enough -- the intro riff before the vocals start is pretty cool.
- 'Nuff said about Repentance
- The Best of Times -- the lyrics are nice.
- Lost Not Forgotten has a catchy chorus.
- False Awakening Suite isn't bad.  It's just less good than the rest of the album.
- The less said about TA the better.
- Room 137 has kind of a catchy little groove.
- Haven't digested View well enough to comment on a clear least favorite.

The only redeeming quality of Anna Lee is that it's beautifully sung by James.

As for Constant Motion, it's only strength is that it can be skipped. Ditto for Viper King.

You Not Me, which is for easily the worst song ever put on a DT studio album, has a cool riff and the outro is kinda neat.  That's all I got.

As for Constant Motion, it's only strength is that it can be skipped.

That one ranks very low for me as well, but it has a good riff.  And Petrucci's solo, with Portnoy's killer drumming underneath, is pretty bad ass.  I will give it that at least.

Room 137: The main riff is neat......the first few times anyways.

It just straight-up reminds me of this Amaranthe song.

...and here I thought The Alien was a pretty good track!
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

The groove behind the JP and JR solo section in "A Rite of Passage" is really good. It's the kind of stuff that makes your head bop.
