First impression: This song is both chill and quite technical

Quite an interesting choice to send this artist again . I've never been a big fan of his music tbh - although it's quite well-crafted, it lacks the emotional power to get me invested into it. This is a nice and chill song, but I feel it's just kind of there? Like a nice wallpaper, quite unobstrusive, but not remarkable either.

The Expendables Sacrifice

First impression: This song reminds of stuff I hear on the radio

It has that reggae vibe that's quite common on the radio here. It's got a nice and simple groove, a bit of atmosphere going on in the chorus, and some cool guitars after the middle section. A nice and simple song.

Intervals Breathe

First impression: This song is pleasing but forgettable

Yeah I'm not feeling this one that much, it literally feels like an interval between songs lol. It's just alright, but I feel I've listened to something like this many times before and it's never been my cup of tea. It's just too innofensive.

Periphery Erised

First impression: This song reminds me of a genre I don't care about

Never cared about this band, and I remember why - it's mix of progressive metal with uuhhh metalcore? has never resonated with me. It reminds me of bland songs from that genre. While I appreciate the electronics and the catchy vocals, it feels too much like something that would appeal an angsty USA teenager. At least it's quite well put-together.

Buckethead Dreaming Frequencies

First impression: This song is quite surprising

I've never listened to Buckethead tbh, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Certinaly not something this atmospheric! I think this is my favorite song from the EP, I like the chill vibes quite a bit. It's nothing mindblowing but quite pleasing, mostly when the electronic drums come in. A little too short sadly.

My Chemical Romance Welcome to the Black Parade

First impression: This song represents the emo phase I never had

Yeah I think you've already sent me this on a previous roulette years ago, but it's been so long I've forgotten about it. It's quite an anthemic song at first that quickly transitions into more typical pop punk territory, before going back to the grandiose sound. Dunno how I felt about this song before but am quite enjoying it this time. Never had an emo phase tbh, but now I kinda feel like checking this album out.

La Dispute Fulton Street I

First impression: This song is grim

I like how dark and moody this track is, even if most of its runtime is just a slow build up. And I was kind of expecting an epic climax, but it just ends . Which is fine, and maybe it makes more sense in the album context, but I felt there quite some potential here - I was really digging the atmosphere and the vocals in particular.

Spanish Love Songs Otis/Carl

First impression: This song's style is alright but not my thing

Ah yes, more pop-punk and emo. Never been huge on those genres tbh, neither when I was younger nor now that I'm an adult. I appreciate the songwriting here, it's quite strong, but I'm not feeling it that much personally. It just sounds like every other band of this style out there.

First impression: This song reminds me of how hit or miss this genre is

Post-hardcore is kind of difficult for me, as I've found more misses than hits on it. This song in particular I feel it's quite busy, and although the atmosphere is nice, and the buildup is great, it's not resonating with me as much as I'd like to. I dunno, maybe it's just too foreign a style for me to properly get it.

PUP Scorpion Hill

First impression: This song kinda reminds me of Brand New

It's the vocal harmonies that sort of remind me of what Brand New did on some of their songs, but yeah that's all I can really compare between the two tbh. So, more pop-punk! This one with a bit more intensity and personality (but barely). Hints of indie rock are appreciated and make for an interesting experience at least. Cool track.

Spanish Love Songs Losers 2

First impression: This song is quite well-written but not my cup of tea

Is the pop punk? Or the punk pop? . Important questions aside, this is a nice song. Sort of reminds me of the 2000s, my childhood, and early teenage years for some reason. Maybe it's just that this genre never changed much. And that's fine I guess, but not what I'm looking for in music.

First impression: This song is intense

Such a dark and intense song, knowing about the context this was made in gives it another meaning. Which kind of makes me feel a little bad for not giving it a higher score, but it's just too short and abrupt on its ending for me. I guess it fits the theme well at least?

First impression: This song has some layering

I quite like the layering of the vocals and the guitars, it makes for a dense but quite cathartic sound that I enjoy. I really feel it should be a little longer as well, but it's strong for what it is. A nice way to close the EP anyway.

The Hu Wolf Totem

First impression: This song has some... interesting vocals

I quite enjoy some throat singing here and there, and hearing it in this context is quite interesting. It feels more ancient than modern in general, but in a way that works quite well. It's a simple but quite solid song, makes me quite curious about the rest of this album!

First impression: This song has both a modern and ancient sound

This one has more of a contemporary flavor than the other one. Feels kinda like the soundtrack to a videogame for some reason. Also the vocals are a bit more uuhhh normal here for the most part . Didn't find it as engaging as the previous track, but it's still quite solid.

Alien Weaponry Ru Ana Te Whenua

First impression: This song is original but kinda generic at the same time

On the one hand I like the fusion of these ancient sounds with more contemporary metal. On the other, it feels like a superficial blend of both styles that leads to some generic sounding guitars and vocals. Which is quite fine, but I prefer when the result is a much more unique sound, like Jambinai's mixture of noise rock with traditional korean folk, yet sounding almost like neither. This is an alright song for the most part - I felt that the section with the gongs was going for something unique, but it didn't, oops.

First impression: This song has some generic riffs

I'm not feeling these riffs nearly as much as I'd like to - they're fine, but I feel I've heard way better ones and with nicer drumming to go along with them. The song has a pretty simple structure for the most part, which means there are little surprises or twists, which I'd have liked given the interesting sound they've got going on. Oh well.

The Hu Song of Women

First impression: This song has some interesting textures

The longest song on the EP! This one feels a bit more adventurous and exploratory, with more of a continuous and repetitive structure, but one that works quite well here and doesn't feel long at all. There's also plenty of interesting sounds and textures here. My only gripe is I don't find the main motif that memorable after a few listens, and while it never gets boring, it never did stick to my memory that much. Still, cool song.
