Most of these are a bit conservative, as there's chance some tracks will grow on me before tomorrow. Also, these only consider the raw score without the bonus point from the previous round.

Thinking about the next round, I'm thinking the song I submitted is not necessarily "Extreme" but I'll stick with it because it's a damm good song.

I'm struggling to pick a song because I am not a fan of extreme music.  I like blast beats and growls in songs, just not full tilt throughout the whole song.  My ears get weary.

Basically anything at a super high tempo, with tons of blast beats, shrieks/growls, super distorted guitars, a wall of sound, etc. Pretty much anything you'd label black / death metal, or that'd end up in "core" I guess. I was mostly thinking in metal subgenres but something like power electronics / harsh noise also counts as well.

What I sent is labelled as Technical Death Metal so we will see  :corn

Here they are - I'm quite pleased with this round, plenty of strong submissions.

Puppies_On_Acid
Secret Chiefs 3 Combat for the Angel

First impression: This song meanders

The beginning is quite promising, as it feels we're about to embark on quite an interesting journey - I like the motifs introduced here and the mix of heavy and unconventional (middle eastern?) instrumentation. Then we get a violin (I think?) solo, which I thought was cool! And then it continued for a little while, ok. And then for another little while, uuhh. And on and on for minutes. And while it's a fine solo with pretty interesting sections, it feels both disconnected from the rest of the song and it takes too damn long - it takes more than half of the runtime. Shame, it had some pretty cool ideas.

3/5

Cyril
Emily Scott Robinson Let 'Em Burn

First impression: This song is lovely

Yeah this is a pretty simple but nice piano ballad. It's got the lovely melodies I like, the singing and lyrics are emotional... yet it's short of resonating with me. It kind of lacks something to make it distinct from the many emotional piano ballads out there. It's pretty well executed for sure, just wished it stood out a bit more.

3.5/5

Elite
Sungazer Electro

First impression: This song glitches

Mnnnn glitchy music can be quite hit or miss with me - sometimes it's too much and I get bored. This however is quite a cool balance of glitchiness and some jazz fusion. The sax is quite the highlight of the song, but sadly it only lasts for too little. The rest of the track has some cool electronic sections I quite enjoy, but I feel as a whole, it's a bit overwhelming. The pacing is quite fast and despite being 4 minutes, it ends up quite quickly. It feels like there's tons of really good ideas here that they couldn't completely flesh out and just kept throwing new ones one after the other. So it's a bit of a mess, but en enjoyable one nevertheless.

3.5/5

TAC
Sia Chandelier - Piano Version

First impression: This song is emotional

I'll admit I was familiar with the original pop version - it was all over the place a few years ago back when I was in high school. I didn't love it back then and kinda forgot about it, so I decided to allow it since I didn't know I was familiar with it until I gave it a listen. Went with the piano version as you seemed to prefer it, and that was the right choice tbh. I think the singing is a bit over the top for my taste and it makes more sense with the pop sounds, but it's not that big of a deal here. It's an alright song to me, kinda wished I could emotionally connect to it, but it's an easy listen at least.

3.5/5

ReaperKK
Akord Ethereality

First impression: This song is alright

I don't have strong opinions on this one - it feels kinda generic, with strong influences from alt rock, and bands like Haken and Porcupine Tree at display. And while there's nothing wrong with that, I tend to prefer artists with more unique sounds. It's a nicely written and executed song, an easy listen for sure - I just don't find it particularly stands out.

3.5/5

lonestar
Senri Kawaguchi Blessed Rain After the Drought

First impression: This song is a wallpaper

Sometimes with such complex writing and extraordinary musicianship, like DT's last few albums for instance, I wonder how such music can end up going the other way around and end up becoming... a wallpaper. Something that's kind of there, but that's not resonating with me at least. I had something similar happen to me with this song - I really wanted to love it, and while the individual pieces are very cool, it's the sum of its parts that's lacking for me. It's a coherent piece for sure, but I also feel these ideas go nowhere.

3.5/5

HOF
Sweet Billy Pilgrim Stars Spill out of Cups

First impression: This song is comfy

Indie music has always been a tough sale for me, as I find much of it very similar to each other, and it's not a sound I'm crazy about to not mind. So this is not that different in terms of personality, but I'll admit it's quite a nicely written track. I liked the buildup it was happening around the middle but then it kind of dissipated and went back to the previous section just like that. Oh well.

3.5/5

Tomislav95
mewithoutYou In a sweater poorly knit

First impression: This song is grand

I've got no clue on why I thought this was a post-rock band, maybe it was their weird name :lol. This is a lot closer to indie rock, and it reminds me a bit of early Arcade Fire but without quite the emotional punch tbh. It's a lovely song for sure, and I like their sound, particularly the inclusion of an arp. I guess it's just the songwriting that falls a bit short to me - it's just a pretty simple track.

3.5/5

TheSoylentMan
Three Trapped Tigers Engrams

First impression: This song is spacey

I quite like the ideas on this song - kinda synthwave, kinda math rock, with plenty of energy. Sounds pretty good on paper, and the execution if rather nice actually. It's a pretty cool instrumental piece, I just feel that it's probably a bit too hectic for my taste. Maybe I'd have liked a bit more dynamics to it, to balance that crazy energy.

3.5/5

wolfking
The Tea Party Psychopomp

First impression: This song explodes

I really like how this song mixes the lo-fi electronics and the rock elements. There's a nice duality with the dark tone of the vocals and the hopeful little toy piano. The production might be a bit muddy but it kinda works here. I also love how it builds up and then explodes with quite some intensity. So far each song you've sent me has been better than the previous one, so I'm curious to see what you've got for the next round.

4/5

Evermind
Beth Hart Fire on the Floor

First impression: This song is fire

Dunno why you thought it'd be a meandering track - it's quite a straightforward breakup song. And a pretty well written one! It kinda reminds me of the Beth Gibbons Out of Season album, but in a blues rock vibe. The singing is intense, the guitars are emotional, and the climax is pretty cool. It's not an inventive track by any means but it's an excellent execution of the ideas on display here. Sometimes that's enough for me.

4/5

Stadler
Gerry Rafferty Baker Street

First impression: This song saxs

Didn't expect to end up liking this track as much as I did when it started, but when the sax came in, I knew this was gonna be a blast. That repeating section is just so good whenever it appears, it's so grand and climatic. The rest of the song is fine and enjoyable, I quite like the strings on the background. Kinda wished the sax was a bit more present throughout the whole song. I also like the guitar solo here. Pretty cool stuff.

4/5

Vmadera00
Mago De Oz El Cantar de la Luna Oscura

First impression: Ésta canción entretiene

Alright, I was expecting this to be some pretty generic power metal but it's actually very well written rock with uuhh Celtic influences? And some slight Spanish folk flavors maybe? Anyway, it's quite an interesting mixture of sounds and it works quite well. It's pretty fun, it kinda reminds me a bit of some latin rock from around here.

4/5

Buddyhunter1
Carpenter Brut Looking For Tracy Tzu

First impression: This song fucks

Ok this is almost cheating, knowing I absolutely love the Hotline Miami soundtracks, and some tracks from this album were on them. Guess it's shame on me for not checking this out earlier, because it's a banger. It starts as a pretty standard but nevertheless very cool synthwave track, but then right in the middle it becomes a little noisier and the beats hit harder. Really awesome vibe from there on, I think this would have fitted the games quite well. Awesome song.

4.5/5

kingshmegland
Ben Folds Five Song for the Dumped

First impression: This song is spicy

I didn't expect to have so much fun from a piano-driven song, but it's such a well-written piece I can't help but vibe with it. The singing is simple but catchy, the bass grungry, and the aforementioned pianos, well, just nuts. Drums are alright. It has a great balance of instrumental sections and singing, and plenty of hooks. Pretty funny lyrics as well.

4.5/5
