Didn't they just do a revival of Fantasy Island with a woman and no Denis Villeneuve?  I loved that little guy.

This.  The thread makes about as much sense to me as someone running down the hallway in my office, flailing their arms, and yelling "Whahíbrido Pickingant!" over and over.

Agreed

I'm a bit surprised people don't know who DV is.  The director of Blade Runner 2047 and Dune should be *a bit* better known by now.   But I have absolutely no freakin idea what RWR is.

Sorry, it was Blade Runner 2049 (my bad) and it was the amazing and critically acclaimed sequel that came out a few years ago.   It even starred Harrison Ford (reprising his role) and Ryan Gosling.   Seriously dude...how did you not hear of this?

That's like me going up to some random dude at work and saying, "How do you not know Dream Theater released an album this year?"  :lol

I think there's a big difference between Dream Theater (an extremely niche band IMO) and a major motion picture starring Harrison Ford reprising his role in a sequel of one of the most popular sci-fi films of all time.  But OK.   :rollin :rollin :rollin

You know, even as a kid, I never saw Blade Runner. I thought it was Mel Gibson though.

I do know that Harrison Ford was in Indiana Jones though. Never saw those either, but for some fucking reason I can't explain, I DID see Romancing The Stone. :lol

I'm with Tim (and it looks like this sequel didn't even make enough at the box office to recoup production costs, so....).

It made a quarter of $1 billion against of $185 million budget. But yes, I see where wiki says that in spite of that, the studio said they needed to make 400 million to break even.

My underlying point remains. Comparing a niche band like dream theater to a major motion picture starring Harrison Ford that made a quarter of $1 billion at the box office is hardly in the same ballpark. To have never even heard of that movie is equivalent to living in a cave. Especially with a sci-fi heavy crowd that tends to hang around this forum.

And especially now that Dune has become a worldwide hit, it has done even more to put the directors name in the limelight.

I had no idea who Denis Villeneuve was until all the Dune hype. And I thought Blade Runner 2049 was a triumph! I just had no idea who directed it.

I haven't read Rama (although I plan to at some point), but I'm automatically in anything Villeneuve is doing. There aren't a ton of directors doing high-budget and also good science fiction films at the moment.

Lol at the conversation going on this thread!

I haven't read the book but did read a few comments about how it is quite a difficult book to adapt, IMO Denis has shown he's great at creating an interesting movie out of difficult to adapt books.

In my book he's made no bad movie, if anyone wants to check any of his movie I would recommend starting with Sicario. It is one of most thrilling movies one could hope for.

I think most people just don't really pay attention to directors. Even I only know a handful off the top of my head whose movies I'd be interested in seeing based solely on the director, and I tend to follow movie news and stuff fairly regularly. Bladerunner 2049 is also, while great, kind of a niche film and I don't think it's surprising that a lot of people don't remember hearing anything about it. I would be surprised by people not having heard of Arrival, though.

I am in for this. I believe this book will be difficult to adapt, but this guy seems to know what he is doing. I haven't seen Dune yet but everyone has told me it's an excellent movie and that it is the best adaptation of the book to date.
