Just got home from Steve Vai's London show at the Palladium. The show itself was great and the band was tight, despite not touring for over 2 years and this being their third show on the tour.  :metal

Because of everything going on with Dance Gavin Dance, Coheed is replacing them for the tour. As much as it sucks for the band, I'm kind of happy because I don't really care much for DGD.

So I didn't see Starset yesterday.  Ticket prices weren't dropping to below $30.00 like I hoped they would (face value was $35.00 on Ticketmaster, raised up to $39.00 the day of).  Plus, I wasn't feeling too great, so I have to draw a line somewhere.

No matter, there are still shows in June I got my eyes on.  Nothing More and Atreyu are playing at the Anaheim House of Blues next Wednesday.  Hoping for a ticket below $40.00 to get me to go.

I may also take a different direction and see 5 Seconds of Summer at FivePoint Amphitheater if a center-view bleacher seat is priced at where I like.  I'm also considering seeing this Mexican band called Mana at the Kia Forum (hurray, a new sponsor name for a LA building that does not have a cringy name like Youtube Theater or Crypto.com Arena) in Inglewood.  Saw a live stream of theirs years ago, and I liked their vibe, so that's an option.

Got Midnight Oil next week and a week after that, Tears for Fears.

Wait, you don't think Kia Forum is a cringy name? Or is that sarcasm.   :lol I saw the new name earlier this morning and thought that was terrible.  I miss just "The Forum" which is kind of a basic name but established and known for what it is.  I'd imagine people will still call it that.

Two concerts this weekend:

June 11th - Sammy Hagar’s The Circle & George Thorogood @ PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel NJ
June 12th - Haken & Symphony X @ Wellmont Theater, Montclair NJ

I imagine some people that went to events in the Forum in the late 80s/90s still call it The Great Western Forum like most people probably still call Crypto.com Arena, Staples Center.  For me, I personally refer to it as the Inglewood Forum to distinguish itself from other places in the world that has "The Forum" as a name.

When you have seen names like Youtube Theater and Crypto.Com Arena, having a building name after a car company is not bad in comparison.  No different than say Toyota Arena in Ontario, California or Honda Center (formerly known as Arrowhead Pond) in Anaheim.

Part of the naming rights contract needs to be that repaint the entire fucking roof, and not just the part where your name will go.

For me it's always been just "The Forum." I didn't figure anybody ever bothered with whatever qualifier might be attached. In any case, when it comes to venues the name you start with is the name you own for the rest of your existence. The owner can call it whatever the hell they want, but don't expect me to.

It's been hard to call Metlife Stadium anything but Giants stadium even though it's a completely different building. But I think it's situational, usually for more iconic venues which I would consider the Forum to be. No one calls the amphitheater near me the Garden State Arts Center. People only call it PNC Bank Arts Center. It's not an iconic venue.

Football stadiums are a weird thing, because some of us old folks still think of them more for where they are than what they're called. The Patriots play at Foxboro. The Giants and Jets play at the Meadowlands. I don't even know what Buffalo's stadium is. It's just Orchard Park, AFIC.

Pretty sure I drove past that place a month or two ago. Looked alright, I liked the area, but I could see how traffic might suck ass.

Along those lines, though, you saw a show at our version of that place, Starplex, and I recall it was something completely different when you were there. Everybody in Dallas knows what Starplex is, and if you say Yellowpages.com Center people are going to think you're in the wrong city.

So here's a cool little side note about the upcoming Nemophila show at the Whisky....they only did two shows before Covid (mostly covers)...they were barely a band when it struck, they built their fanbase through YT vids and streaming shows. Since stuff started opening up again, they've done 4 or 5 shows, all in Japan, where restrictions hold people from cheering at shows and everyone is masked, and of course in Japan they follow directions better than we do here in the states. So they posted today that their looking forward to the Whisky show because it will be the first show they actually hear their fans screaming for their music.

Such a fucking trip...this show is gonna be fucking dope.

Trying to keep this thing current, scratched a few shows that I ditched on, adding Nemophila at the Whisky in July..
1/16- Tool, Chase Center
2/6-   Dream Theater, Fox Theater
3/13- Allegaeon, DNA Lounge
4/23 Dragonforce, UC Theater
6/30- Allegaeon, The X Bar in Santa Clara
7/1- Nemophila, USA DEBUT, Whisky A Go Go
9/9- Aristocrats, Great American Music Hall
9/11- Nine Inch Nails, Greek Theater in Berkeley
9/21- Sabaton, Epica, Fox Theater
9/28- Porcupine Tree, The Masonic
10/7- Nemophila and a shit ton of other bands at Aftershock Festival

We'll see if I can pull off seeing Allegaeon, sleeping, driving 6 hours to LA, and seeing Nemophila. Not sure if my 50+ year old ass is up for that, which would be a bummer, cause Allegaeons new album is fucking dope.

I was about to do the same thing for Allegaeon. But, I haven't really rested from ProgPower either until today. My plane landed and I went straight into work till close. Then got up early for my other job the next day. I was out of it when I got home and could not do the 50 mile drive to Santa Fe, stand for the show, then drive back, and wake up early again the next day.

I really like Allegaeon too and I am sure it was a kick ass show. My friend's brother loves them, I still need to ask him how it was.

While I don't go there anymore, the venue on 44th and 7th (Times Square), finally got a "descent" name for it. It used to be "Best Buy Theater", Then it changed to "Play Station Theater" (Seriously?), and now it's called "Palladium Times Square".

Over here, people still call our main big venue...The Journal, it's full name was Journal Pavilion. It was named after the Albuquerque Journal, then the Isleta Casino got the name rights and called it..."Isleta Casino presents the Pavilion" and now it's called, "Isleta Amphitheater" but people still call it by The Journal. :lol

I forgot about Nokia! Yeah it's a good venue, I just don't like going to that area anymore. I used to work right across the street from there at the Guitar Center when it first opened (2014) and it was already the BB theater. Last show I saw there I think it was 2013/2014, Five Finger Death Punch and All That Remains, the one and only time I did crowd surfing at a show

Allegaeon tours a lot in the states, you'll have another shot, but if you like the new album I wouldn't skip this one. It's going to be very Danum heavy.

I asked him how it was and he said it was amazing. Also, he got to talk with them and learned a lot about the music business. I like the song Called Home and would've went just to hear that song. Hopefully, no one else will be playing the local spot here and I won't have to travel to see them...

I've seen Ace Frehley opening for Alice Cooper back in April in LA.  I say playing wise, there was nothing glaring to note.  I will say, however, in his post-song banter, I felt that he was slurring a bit in his words, but not enough that it affected the set or the mood which was a fun outdoor good times vibe.

Saw Drive-By Truckers at London Kentish Town Forum last night (and in the spirit of this thread I'm refusing to call it by it's corporate sponsor's name). Very good they were too.

AXS Customer Service on the other hand... suffice it to say I will NEVER book tickets thru AXS again, I'd rather not go to the show.

I've never been to the BB Theater (and being a DT/Portnoy fan, that's a crime, since I think he's played there about 984 times).    But that new name introduces it's own problem.  "The Palladium" is a famous venue in New York and it wasn't there in Times Square, it was over on East 14th St. near NYU and Irving Plaza.  It started as the Academy Of Music, and the list of rock and metal bands that played there in the '70's and '80's is as long as my arm.  Kiss played there as an opening act when they were starting out, and played a couple "club" gigs (it wasn't a club; it held like 3,500) later on in the 80's.   Eric Carr's first appearance with the band was there.  Maiden played there a number of times (I have an '82 boot from there that is excellent).  It's sort of trading on the name I think.  The TLA in Philly is like that too.  I don't know; maybe it doesn't matter to anyone but me, but since I'm interested in the history of music, it's important.

Marc, are you planning to go to the Porcupine Tree show?

By the way, I tried sending you a PM but your inbox is full.

Currently not planning on it, I cleaned my inbox up a bit.

Because of everything going on with Dance Gavin Dance, Coheed is replacing them for the tour. As much as it sucks for the band, I'm kind of happy because I don't really care much for DGD.
Hows Alkaline Trio and Mothica sound instead?

AXS Customer Service on the other hand... suffice it to say I will NEVER book tickets thru AXS again, I'd rather not go to the show.

I can totally feel something bad could be brewing already. My pair of Queen + Adam Lambert tickets were bought on TM UK, but they told me check with the O2 app (as mentioned above). As I finally got around to look closer, I needed to get into the AXA info via the O2 app. As of right now a QR Code is all I have, and it doesn't show any information whatsoever. The CS at TM told me my tickets "should" appear two days prior to the show for security reasons (what?). I bought a pair of tickets and I can't even have at least a pdf version as backup?  :tdwn

I fucking love Alkaline Trio! Wish they were bringing them to the UK as well, although I am super stoked for Thrice.

Thrice is playing locally tomorrow night.  I just don't have the energy for a 3 concert weekend after Progpower from last week and Thrice is my least favorite of Sammy Hagar, Haken and themselves.  Sadly I'll also miss Gwar this weekend as it's the same day as Sammy.  Big weekend of music in NJ!

Also NOFX just announced a punk in drublic show with Descendants locally for October but it's the same day as 311 and I'm a huge 311 fan so sadly I am choosing to miss the punk show.  Sucks because I feel like NOFX rarerly comes to NJ and while I'm not the fan I used to be, it's been like 20 years since I've seen them now so I'd totally go.  Oh well.

Now I know why the keyboardist of Alestorm said on reddit recently that they can't tour the US until next year because all the venues are booked  :lol

Saw Sammy Hagar and the Circle on Saturday night with George Thorogood and the Destroyers opening.  It was the first concert for me this summer at my local shed and the evening started with the new high school staff directing traffic poorly and forcing us to park in the further away lot even though there were plenty of spots open up close.  Not sure if that's a new traffic flow or just ignorance from the new staff, but it annoyed me as someone who's gone to wayyy too many shows here to count so I know the venue like the back of my hand.

Anyway, George Thorogood was the opening act.  I will say, I was not a fan.  I only know the couple hit songs, but I found his set fairly boring.  I'm sure that style of rock music plays a role in me not being into it, but something about him made me not into it.  He seemed like a gross old man.  Let me put it that way.  I loved the live sax player and George's guitar playing was good.  Even when he did Bad to the Bone, I was just not into it at all.

Sammy was next.  It started wtih the full Summer Nights song being played on the PA before the band came out.  I was kind of bummed that song wasn't being played live considering it was a summer night and all, and a song I really like, but regardless, it helped wake the crowd up.  The set list was mostly Van Halen songs, with some Sammy songs sprinkled in.  One Led Zepellin cover and one DLR era VH song that Mike Anthony sung lead on.  I was a bit surprised to see no original Circle songs.  I guess he figures it's best to go with what the crowd knows instead of trying to work over his newer original music?  I can't complain though, I hadn't seen Sammy in 18 years.  His set list was perfectly fine for me.

Sadly, it sounded like Sammy's voice was shot.  Right out of the gate he struggled singing There's Only One Way to Rock.  It was kind of disappointing to hear him sound so bad.  It was only night 2 of the tour.  Maybe age has just caught up with him.  I also thought the entire band kind of sounded like shit.  Like, I've seen bands with no budget sound better than these rock stars.  I think my video shows it too, George Thorogood didn't sound bad, but the mix for Sammy's band was pretty garbage.  Sucks he also had to play to keyboard backing tracks for a few songs.  Like they can't get a live player? I know Sammy had one in his Waboritas band.

Having said my negatives, I actually had a lot of fun.  Just seeing Sammy and Michael Anthony on stage together might be worth the price of admission alone.  Sammy showing off all the fan stuff being tossed on stage is always fun too (the Poundcake NJ license plate was great).  His voice may be shot, but the guy still knows how to throw a party.  He had plenty of drinks on stage to give out to people and drink himself.  It was a very fun set and the crowd ate up the VH songs.  As much as this post was complaints, I swear, I still had a good time and would go again.

I'm not one to bag on Sammy; big fan of his solo stuff (and The Circle; that record they put out a couple years ago is SURPRISINGLY good), but he's 74, so I would expect at some point the pipes are going to say "enough". That's fine, there's enough there to like that I'd still go, but it saddens me that the band itself wasn't tight and didn't sound good. They are all monster players and they've been playing together for years now, so a June night at a shed ought to be like boiling water (that is to say, too easy to screw up) for them at this point.

Yeah, he's an older dude who's going to struggle I get that.  But Alice Cooper sounded better all around. It was fun though, you should definitely go if you are interesting and he's coming to town.

Paul McCartney is about to be 80 years old and he still has a good enough live voice.  Then again, Beatles and Wings songs aren't really vocally demanding songs to sing.  Probably Maybe I'm Amazed.
