The problem with Octavarium is that the majority of the songs are merely pretty good/good. The lack of truly great songs outside of the title track is glaring. It's too bad because there is a lot of variety on the album, and it could have been one of their best had the songwriting been consistently great, but alas it was not to be. And as great as the title track is, I do dinge it a little because it has so many direct musical references to songs by other bands. This was the era where DT was borrowing a bit too much.
