Cool. Never heard of them, but I'm not a guitarist. But I was interested after hearing the lead tones.

To me, PRS>>>>Fender>>Gibson.

I don't know. Gary Moore played a Gibson Les Paul, and it's the best I've ever heard a guitar sound.

I'll give that to Les Paul, they sound great. But that's about the only thing they have going for them. Those guitars are heavy and uncomfortable.

Also, “publicly scoff” is probably too strong a phrase, but I’m pretty sure SW has said that he didn’t care for DT’s style of music.

Yes, DT is one of the many bands and "traditional" prog is one of the many directions SW doesn't care for. You could fill books with the bands/artists he doesn't like/don't care for/don't find relevant. And while that is his decision, because it's his taste, makes you wonder why he has to tell everyone about it.

Kinda like a vegan.  :D
Or people who do crossfit.  :lol

If you’re a vegan who does CrossFit, what do you tell people first?  :D

The Les Paul has the history and mystique, and an iconic list of players, but PRS guitars are better built, more consistent, and are generally more versatile.  They were designed to split the difference between a Les Paul and a Strat, and I think they nailed it.

Update.. moving right along. I think I have 7 writeups done. Hoping for Thursday. We'll see.

I also want to mention again that the lead guitar playing is outstanding. Is SW his own lead guitarist?
If so, what is his guitar of choice?

I think where SW really shines is in finding the right sounds. His playing and his music in general is less about technical prowess and more about textures, soundscapes and atmosphere.
Must've been Kwyji sending all the wrong songs.   ;D

That's because it was Gary Moore behind it.  He'd make a $200 guitar sound better than a $2000 guitar played by anyone else.

The Lovely Mrs TAC informed me this morning that she is taking the rest of the week off. There goes my afternoon listening! :yeahright   :lol

BUT, I'm 17 writeups down and 7 to go.

Here's what I would say about the results.. I've said it before, but a 7.5 means I LIKE IT. I think we're going to be really bunched up between 7.5 and 8.0. Pretty sure there's no 8.5's at this point. There might be a song or three below 7.5, but I have generally liked pretty much everything I've heard.

He was in Asia for the Aura and Silent Nation albums. He also played some guitar on Ayreon's The Source album.

If you were not inclined to like Asia to begin with, then I can't see how you'd like those two albums. They don't even have John Wetton on vocals, since he was replaced by a dude named John Payne. I rather enjoy Aura and Silent Nation, but they sorta have this generic 90's soft rock keyboard/watery new-age-y sound with some touches of prog here and there. I remember Stads saying that he absolutely hated this iteration of Asia.

For what it's worth, the first Asia album is iconic in my view, and I'm a big fan of the second one as well.   I saw the John Payne Asia live at Toad's Place (Steve Howe toured with them and played like half the set) and it's one of the worst concerts I've ever seen.   I don't own - nor will I ever own - any of the NON-John Wetton Asia albums.   I know that's harsh, and others have more patience or forgiveness for the John Payne Asia, but to me, that iteration does not exist.

For Christmas one year, my brother found a bootleg version of an Asia concert on DVD with John Payne, Geoff Downes, Chris Slade on drums, and Guthrie on guitar.  It was awful.  John Payne trying to sing Wetton-era songs was super cringe-y.  I think I ended up either throwing it away or giving it back to my brother.
