I love Heritage. It and Watershed remain my favorite Opeth albums.

Heritage is just a big disappointment. And no, it's not that there are no growls, it's because there are no good songs.

Out of the last 3 it's my least favorite.  I'd rank the last three albums from worst to best as they came out.  I think they are just getting better figuring out how to write heavy without the growls.

It just helps me keep things straight.

We've all run roulettes before, and know that the listening is the easy part. It's the typing/formatting/organizing that is the pain in the ass, and this roulette, for some reason, has given me nightmares in this regard.

I'm a Heritage defender. It's their best post-Watershed album for sure. Dunno how people can say it has no good songs when The Devil's Orchard and Folklore exist. And while Sorceress and In Cauda Venenum might be heavier, Heritage makes up for it with much more atmosphere, which is one of the most important things about Opeth. Songs like Haxprocess and Famine are so fucking dark and dreary and I love it.

Whenever someone criticizes Heritage I just swap it out with Pale Communion in my mind and suddenly the points make a lot more sense.

I definitely agree with all of that. The atmosphere on that album is so powerful. Besides the four you pointed to, I'd also mention I Feel the Dark as a good song with a ton of atmosphere.

Pale Communion and Sorceress don't do much for me. They're both alright, but not particularly inspiring. I like In Cauda Venenum a lot better than them, but I wouldn't put it on the same level as Heritage.

I think Pale Communion in particular is excellent (so is Heritage, but I prefer PC). Sorceress has some good tracks, but I could easily skip half of it.

I'm not very familiar with In Cauda Venenum, to be honest. I need to give it a few more listens.

none of the post-growlpeth albums do a ton for me but uhh. i don't really remember any of heritage, i kinda liked pale communion but wouldn't relisten to it, sorceress i literally only listened to like twice, in cauda venenum i thought was solid but nothing amazing either. didn't consider any of these albums at all in my submissions

I completely lost interest from Heritage onwards.  Can't get into anything they've done since that album.

Well I made through the 21 song/3 hour playlist. I know Stadler is spending the night listening to the Opeth discography and will send hopefully tomorrow.

I realized that after about the 12th song that I hadn't written any First Impressions. So guess what..no first impressions this round!

But I will post some tidbits as I listen..

I did not send Bleak.

Nor I, even though it probably is my favorite. I assumed he'd get at least 5 Bleaks from others. I went wild card this round. 2 songs pre-Blackwater and 1 post-Heritage. I tend to think I went a bit obscure on my early picks, but we'll see.

I'll see how Bleak does here and then maybe send it in the PT round. 

Ooh, 2 pre-Blackwater Park songs is a ballsy move. Curious how that turns out. I almost sent something from My Arms, Your Hearse, but chickened out in the end.

MAYH is one of their best albums though. I considered sending Karma. Demon Of The Fall would probably do decently well and I'd be surprised if nobody sent it.

I'm in.   I listened to the first part of Soldier of Fortune (I didn't listen all the way through) and what I heard was nice, but didn't bring anything new to the table.  I submitted two songs, but I can't tell you how many times I was like "wow, this is musically way better than I remember..." then the vocals kicked in and I was like, "nope, this is what I remember!".    I get it, contrast, light and dark, blah blah blah, but nah, I'm good.
