I did not send 1985. I think it's a solid song but I don't really get why it's so beloved compared even to other songs on the same album.

Well, I'm not sending my favorites from every artist. I'm analyzing every track and trying to decide if he'll like it or not. I didn't send my favorite Devin and kind of sent one fave from Haken. I know I'm not sending faves from Neal and Opeth.

1985 felt like a track that he would like based on his like for the older music and such. I just bailed and went another direction which I felt was safer (and will probably blow up in my face).

In terms of Affinity, the run of Earthrise - Red Giant - The Endless Knot is where it's at for me, but 1985 ranks just behind those three.

Yeah, it's not a matter of style, it's a matter of perceived quality, which I'm obviously not arguing is objectively provable (I don't want to range that wildly in this thread). I could have named other examples, but those are three songs that I think are way better than 1985 (and that I think tend to be popular among Haken fans).

It's like if I compared Peruvian Skies to Metropolis, The Glass Prison and Octavarium. To me, those three songs are far better than Peruvian Skies. And so I would be surprised () if someone liked Peruvian Skies better. I have similar feelings of surprise at people liking 1985 better than Celestial Elixir, Visions and Falling Back to Earth. But it's not a personal criticism, just a discussion of preferences.

Yeah of course, I guess for me it's precisely because they're all different in style (including 1985), that I don't at all find it odd or unusual or surprising that some people will like some more than others. I love all four of those songs, but some others that are mostly loved (like The Architect) I find pretty much weaker.

Ultimately for me it comes down to the fact that Haken are one of those bands whose talent and songwriting are just consistently excellent, and so the songs than any fan likes more or less (or in some cases even dislikes) is mostly going to come down to taste in terms of style.

If we’re comparing 1985 to DT songs, it’s a lot closer musically/sonically to something like Take the Time or Innocence Faded than Peruvian Skies. Also reminds me a good bit of an album I know TAC hates, so interested to see what the reaction is.

I don't know what songs Haken fans generally prefer, but it makes sense that DT fans would also like 1985.

I agree Kade, BTBAM are all about albums really, even many of the songs that are more distinctive often segue in and/or out of other ones.

Absolutrly.  The songs on their own for me seem only a piece of a full puzzle.  You need every song of the album to connect a gigantic masterpiece.
