I love the part from 1:30-2:42. As expected, really excellent drumming. Great vocals. Love the keyboard rhythms under the vocals at the 4:40 mark.
Five minutes in and we're good! The vocal effects that start at 5:25 really show you how in control of the music he really is.
6:59....um...what just happened?
Yeah, so let's pretend these next 5 minutes never happened..
The song gets real again at 11:48.
Ends with a real Alice Cooperish final two minutes.


After one listen...I think it's pretty good. I'd have to figure out those middle 5 minutes of WTF before I could grade it. I feel like it'd start around a 7.8 and eventually get to an 8.0.

Not a fan of that wallofsoundblastbeat during/after the chorus "Let there be light" part.. 3:10-5:18....It's like Duran Duran on meth.

This song needs another half dozen listens.

But otherwise, yes I get that Ross seems to be a polarising singer. Personally I love the quality his voice has, but I understand that it doesn't work for others, and that's been the case for ever. That's not really the strong negativity I was referring to though.

We'll see how it works out for everyone but I don't really see Tim liking Virus better than, say, Visions.

On the conversation about Haken in general... I see how Ross is a polarizing singer. I also think there's a predictable degree of backlash in the last few years because they're sort of seen as *the* prog metal band now and one could argue that their last couple of albums are somewhat generic (I like those albums, but I'd agree with that criticism). Kind of similar to the backlash against Dream Theater when they were *the* prog metal band.

I’ve only sampled some individual songs outside the one album I own, so I’m guessing I hit on one with Cookie Monster vocals and assumed it was a more frequent occurrence. What I’ve heard from the last two albums sounded pretty heavy too.

I've listened to The Point of No Return on its own a few times recently; I felt I'd been underestimating it some in the past. So that division is fresh in my mind.

Yeah the last two albums (which are linked, hence being similar in style) were more consistently dark and heavy than Haken usually are. I don't expect that to be the case for the next album though, as apart from Virus being a direct sequel to Vector, they do something a bit different each time.
