I went with SDOIT, the Twelve-Step Suite, and Octavarium.

I like ACOS, and it might be been my third pick but I've really enjoyed the 12SS quite a bit since it wrapped up 12 years ago. In fact, I listened to my personal mix of it just last night!

This was pretty easy.  ACOS is my favorite DT song.  SDOIT is my #3 DT album, primarily on the strength of disc 2.  I love 8VM as a whole, and particularly the second half of it.

After those, I'd go with IT, AMBI and TCOT, in that order.

I have almost no affinity for ANTR or ITPOE, and TDS and Repentance make the 12SS largely unlistenable, even though I like TGP and Root (TSF is just ok).

I also know this is probably a controversial statement, but I put INPOE over Change Of Seasons.  :omg: :omg:

Tough call. ACoS and TCoT are easy picks for me - just gonna have to think about what my third choice will be....
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

Twelve Step suite by far, followed by both a Mind by Itself and the second disc of Six Degrees.

The Twelve Step suite as a whole is probably what I love about Dream Theater the most. So many chills, manic riffs, metal phrases and still so vunerable.

"Vulnerable" or "venerable"? I mean either work, just making sure. 😅

But yeah, I'm surprised fewer people are speaking out for the Twelve-Step Suite. It's one of my favorite things the band has ever done and I'm glad Mike was able to put it all out there before he left the band. When I first discovered the band, I didn't really know that TGP and TDS had subsections or that they were related, but when I started looking more into them online in 2004 or so, I discovered that they were part of a suite that Mike was writing lyrics for album-by-album and so my excitement to hear the next song/parts grew with the next 3 albums as they came out. I love how each song is just different enough from each other to continue being entertaining to my ears. I also really liked how each of the 12 steps start with "Re-" in their titles, and how each successive song referenced or used a riff from the previous song, with the final song taking parts from across the suite to wrap things up.

Such a shame we will never see Mike and the rest of DT perform it all live like he would've wanted. Makes me wish I could've gone to his Shattered Fortress shows!

-Marc.

lol Marc, I mean vulnerable indeed. That suite has so many layers and although it’s hard for me to dig my way through Repentance, I love everything else on it. The prayer at the end of the Shattered Fortress is probably the part I can relate to the most.

So beautiful.

Voted first then saw this.  My votes too.  I really wanted to include votes for #4 and #5.

Why isn't Scenes on the list?  Probably just dominate the poll, huh?  Then the inverse for TA (although I like it)

It's an entire album, just like  TA.  Neither of them are really a "piece" the way that this thread is intending.

I would go with ACOS, 8VM, and AMBI.

I

Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Their best song on their best album.  :hat

You’re half right!  It’s the best song on their absolute worst album by some distance.

My first two picks are pretty easy and they are ACOS and TCOT.  For the third one I have eventually settled on Illumination Theory.

Well, you're both half right!   It probably is the best song on the album, though not by much, but it's neither their best nor worst album.  8V is a top three or four album, though, and I for one would love to see a little acknowledgement of that style in the band's current music.
