Official Witherfall Thread: how isn't this already a thing?
« on: October 28, 2021, 03:00:26 PM »
I figured I'd start a Witherfall thread and see what happens. I'm quite surprised there isn't already one, given this is a forum for a metal prog band. Nevertheless, here we are.

If you're unfamiliar with Witherfall, here's the rundown:

The band:

Vocals - Joseph Michael (who I wish were DT's singer instead of LaBrie)
Guitar - Jake Dreyer (formerly of Iced Earth, but that's probably a topic for the Political page). If you haven't heard his string work you're doing yourself a disservice
Drums - Marco Minnemann (a man who needs no introduction on a DT fan forum)
Bass - Anthony Crawford
Guitar - Alex Nasla

Discography contains 3 albums and 1 EP. Their best work start to finish, in my opinion, is the most recent release, Curse of Autumn (March 2021). The finale (not withstanding the Boston cover), ...And They All Blew Away, is a 15 minute epic with enough variety to satisfy any Dream Theater fan.

Here's the album and track listing. I've bolded my personal favorites from each album.

Nocturnes and Requiems (2017)

Portrait
What We Are Dying For
Act II
Sacrifice
The Great Awakening
End Of Time
   Part I
   Part II
   Part III
   Finale
Nobody Sleeps Here...

A Prelude to Sorrow (2018)

A Prelude To Sorrow
We Are Nothing
Moment Of Silence
Communion Of The Wicked
Maridian's Visitation
Shadows
Ode To Despair
The Call
Vintage
Epilogue

Vintage (EP) (2019)

Acoustic album, including a great cover version of Tom Petty's I Won't Back Down

Vintage Medley
   Vintage I
   Nobody Sleeps Here
   Vintage II

A Tale That Wasn't Right
Ode To Despair
The Long Walk Home (December)
I Won't Back Down
Vintage

Curse of Autumn (2021)

Deliver Us Into The Arms Of Eternal Silence (Instrumental)
The Last Scar
As I Lie Awake     (easily the catchiest song in their entire discography, and a bit different than the rest as a result, but the outro dueling arpeggios are worth it)
Another Face
Tempest
Curse Of Autumn
The Unyielding Grip Of Each Passing Day (Instrumental)
The Other Side Of Fear
The River
...And They All Blew Away
Long Time (Acoustic Version)

If anything, just have a listen to ...And They All Blew Away. It will only cost you 15 minutes of your life, but you might stumble upon a great new band that inspires you for years to come. Or at least entertains you for a while.

Good band. There is already a thread though. If you do a search you will find it.

I like their earlier work quite a bit.  I was looking forward to their release this year, especially given how '20 was a great year for other extra-heavy power/prog bands like Manticora, Persuader, Pyramaze, Unleash The Archers, DGM, Communic, Firewind, Nightmare and such.  But honestly my first and only listen when it came out was a little underwhelming.  I'm hopefully it'll grow on me after a second or third listen.  I have a truckload of that sort of thing I hope to get through over the next couple months.
