Interestingly, the top 3 are also the top 3 from my first album roulette (my v3, which was my first roulette after a few years' hiatus). At least one of you has struggled in each of my roulettes since, but now all three of you are back on form which is rather pleasing!

I’ll take an 8! Ironically, most of the bands I love are from the UK. If you liked that collection, definitely check out Nonsuch as it really has all the best of what XTC has to offer. I don’t know that any of their other albums would be essential if you don’t like that, but their two next best (IMO) would be Skylarking, which is a really wonderful mix of orchestral and power pop tunes but with lousy sound*, and Apple Venus Vol. 1 which is largely orchestral and more in line with Wrapped in Grey.

*the overall production on that one is really strong, but something got messed up on the final mix somehow and it doesn’t sound good.

I'll take that score for Genesis. Glad to hear you're inspired enough to check them out further. The live albums Seconds Out and Three Sides Live are where I would start, honestly. Genesis were a killer live band. And, I know you nixed it for the roulette, but the In the Cage Medley on 3SL is easily one of my favorite moments in music. I know Stadler agrees!

Tim, I have a confession to make.

The score and write-up I posted for your Heart submission... was fake. Because of the fogey-on-fogey bickering, your fellow fogeys (who, I have it on record, are bastards) thought it would be fun to mess with you, and who was I to say no.

You didn't come last.

You didn't score 7.2.

You didn't drop from 3rd place to 11th.

In fact, your submission was better than any of theirs, and has kept you in the running in a solid 4th place.

First impression: Fantastic vocals, I just wonder if I might end up finding the music too tame.

Final opinion: So the answer was that, on the whole, no I don’t find this music too tame at all. In fact, I like it a lot! I find it funny that some of your fellow fogeys have been ripping into you, considering that to my ears this is pretty much as poppy as what they sent me. Indeed I think it was probably the soft sound and low mix on the electric guitar that prompted my initial reaction about the music being tame, but once I got my head around it, I found myself really enjoying it. Crazy On You, Alone and Magic Man all have some great, memorable hooks, and Wilson has a superb voice. The only dud, which incidentally feels the closest to being a rock song, is Barracuda, which ok is kind of fun I guess, but also kind of corny.

Score: 8.1

Final opinion: Hmm, well, to start with the positive, I really do like the vocals a lot. Wilson has a superb voice which makes these songs pretty fun and energetic, and so I do like them overall. I’m just not quite feeling the music really. Alone is a very nice pop song, and Crazy On You is kind of fun although I wish the guitars had a bit more punch. Then the other two songs unfortunately I find a little bland - Barracuda in particular is just a bit corny for my tastes.
