Can someone give me the sparknotes version of this conflict? Did TAC not want to send Heart or something? :lol

Basically some of us fogeys made a gentlemen's agreement to send pop tunes this round. Tim was gonna send Blondie, but since he's near the top of the scoreboard and doesn't have a set of stones, he changed his mind.
It's all quite funny for a couple of reasons.
 - I've been sent a fair bit of pop already, and some of it scored well. Or did that not count because it was good pop? :P
 - No comment on the quality and I can't speak for each artist's wider work, but the fogeys including Tim have all sent me stuff that's pretty equally poppy (EDIT: which isn't actually that much).

I'll own this one.  My "challenge" to a few of my fellow fogeys was a 1-round play of 80s pop-rock.  Five of us agreed.  Four of us actually sent acts that were in the vein of "pop" (as a genre, not the actual definition of the word), while one sent a the most "popular" hits from a legendary classic rock band.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

I tried playing along, which I knew was a fucking bag job.

No you didn't ... you took your toys and went home, content to just play with yourself.   :P

A bag job? I sent fucking Berlin in a music competition on a prog metal board. How the fuck is that a bag job?

No shit!

I sent this guy:

Not exactly Petrucci or Yngwie, is he?

@rom & jingle: nope.

@Buddy & Stads: Yep, although Bill you'll need to narrow yours down more than that.

I'm not good at that!   :)

How about:
You are remarkably consistent.
Nothing out of the ordinary, but quite enjoyable.
Slightly dated production but there’s some great stuff in here.
Didn’t wow me, but there was one particular aspect I liked a lot.
Quite enjoyable, but I’m not sure it goes far enough in doing what it does.
A nice and varied listen - reminded me of one of your previous submissions.

Here are the currently revealed ones by the way:

Round 4 first impressions

You are remarkably consistent.
More intense than I was expecting. [Nekov – David Bowie]
Nothing out of the ordinary, but quite enjoyable.
Slightly dated production but there’s some great stuff in here.
Didn’t wow me, but there was one particular aspect I liked a lot.
Loved the groove, but (one song aside) where were the melodies?
Nice variety of styles - some I loved, others I’m not sure about yet. [Elite – David Bowie]
I’m sure I’ve heard this before, but hadn’t appreciated how good it is. [Cyril – 10cc]
Dark, atmospheric - not sure I took it all in on first listen but I liked it. [Puppies – In the Woods]
Quite enjoyable, but I’m not sure it goes far enough in doing what it does. [lonestar – Berlin]
A nice and varied listen - reminded me of one of your previous submissions. [Stadler – Squeeze]
Fantastic vocals, I just wonder if I might end up finding the music too tame. [TAC – Heart]
Opening up the 90s seems to have led us closer to your usual comfort zone. [Sacul – Gustavo Cerati]
This was pretty much comparable to what I’ve previously heard from this artist.
This was a moderate improvement on what I’ve previously heard from this artist. [Kwyjibo – Van Halen]
This was an enormous improvement on what I’ve previously heard from this artist. [Buddy – Nine Inch Nails]
The vocals aren’t the most consistent, but the music is an enjoyable fusion of styles.
Not sure what I’ll think of a whole album, but for now I’m rather digging the theatricality. [wolfking – King Diamond]

After some process of elimination, I’ve narrowed it down to three possibilities that make the most sense:

Didn’t wow me, but there was one particular aspect I liked a lot.
Nice variety of styles - some I loved, others I’m not sure about yet.
Quite enjoyable, but I’m not sure it goes far enough in doing what it does.

This was an enormous improvement on what I’ve previously heard from this artist.

One of these, probably the first but hoping for the last.  ;D

So the last one is taken by buddy, then mine is the first? Or something completely different?

Nope, so by process of elimination it was in fact the moderate improvement.

Stads, I remember seeing Saueeze live on MTV and I was blown away that Glenn Tilbrook did all the solos.  I never knew back in the day.

I've seen them three times now, and the show from where the picture came I was first row center, and I really came away with a good impression of him:  he is a REALLY good guitar player.  Some of the things he plays while singing are just jaw-dropping.  Seriously.  Not widdly-widdly like Yngwie, but really complicated.  If their tickets were cheaper, they would be one of those bands I would just go see because (for some reason, their tickets are really expensive; where they've played the last couple times around here, is a 500 seat theater, and most tickets are in the $60 range, and they are consistently over $100.)
