Movies that you can't bring yourself to watch.
« on: September 02, 2021, 06:45:44 AM »
There are a whole slew of movies out there that every one of us have never seen.  I'm talking about movies that you know exist but can't bring yourself to watch them for various reasons.  Whether it be preconceived ideas, genre, or even something as simple as the movie title,  what movies have you purposely avoided to invest your time in?  A lot of these movies are popular and come highly recommended..

I'll start with the Harry Potter movies. Despite all the raves from family or friends, I have yet to see any of those films.
Also, I will NEVER see The Exorcist or Texas Chainsaw Massacre..  :lol
You can do a lot in a lifetime if you don't burn out too fast, you can make the most of the distance, first you need endurance first you've got to last....... NP

There are movies that I say I would like to have seen.  Meaning, I think they're probably good movies, often covering important topics, but I just can't get up the will to actually watch them.  Generally, because they're likely to be depressing.  Schindler's List, for example.

For me, there's probably three reasons I haven't watched something.

1) Disposable time - or lack thereof.  I've been meaning to get to them ... some day.  John Wick 2/3 for instance.  I've got a crap-ton saved in my Amazon and Netflix lists.
2) Some movies / genres I just don't have an interest in, like horror.  I've never seen any of the Saw movies.  Chick flicks too... The Notebook?  Hard pass.
3) For everything I've heard, they mostly suck.  The Fast/Furious franchise - jingle.son wants me to watch them, but I just don't have much interest.  The Matrix sequels also fall into this category.

I've not seen a lot of so-called "must see" movies.

One time I watched a "film you must see before you fucking drop dead"  - it was

Y Tu Mama Tambien

And it was awful. :lolpalm:

I'm not interested in films like Citizen Kane etc etc as they could never live up to the enormous hype.

HOWEVER the last time I watched a "film you must see before they bury you in a grave" was Blues Brothers. And I actually loved it.

I was laughing out loud pretty consistently. I thought that because it was really early 80s / late 70s It would be really dated and the

comedy wouldn't translate but it was pretty much my style of humour. Just silly.

Torture porn films (such as A Serbian Film or others) hold no interest for me, and I don't see the appeal.

Same with other plain gross horror films, such as The Human Centipede.  No thank you.

I also have no interest in "make you cry" films, like The Notebook or their ilk.

Also, there are fans of movies that "are so bad they're good", like The Room.  Fuck that, they are just bad.  I don't have time to watch all the good stuff I want to, I certainly won't spend time watching stuff that is bad.

The "Saw" films.  Not a huge "gore" fan.

I've watched "Saving Private Ryan" in the theater; I was on a date and the first 45 minutes or so was so intense I sweat through my shirt (embarrassing! Thankfully she was no better).  I've put off watching it again, even though it was excellent, just because it was that intense.

I stay away from Julia Roberts and/or Hugh Grant films. I find both annoying and cloy, and the "Hollywood" endings not my bag.

I stay away from films that proclaim "it's the feel good film of the year!".

I stay away from Michael Moore films because I paid a lot for my TV, and I don't think warranty would cover a shoe being thrown through the screen (though I usually do find a way to watch them for informational purposes).

Yes. I will never watch anything like Hostel or SAW. The only ones I did enjoy were CUBE but they were more puzzle based and they weren't JUST gore.

And films that make you depressed. Why bother ? Like when I saw Arlington Road - the ending was like " why did I watch that ? "

However I thought the ending of Frank Darabont's The Mist was hilarious in how bleak it was.  ;D If only he'd waited til the very last second....

I also can't bear the modern American comedy where it's people like Will Ferrell just screaming and shouting - and they've obviously

called action and let them have free reign.

Fast And Furious:  I'm going to back up Jingle.son on this one.  If you're looking for continuity like the MCU, you might be disappointed - there's a LOT of retconning in the F&F films, but they're pretty good if you get past the posturing of the Rock (didn't like him in this franchise).  He's not in 9, and we watched this last week (my wife would leave me in a heartbeat for Paul Walker; I had nothing to do with the crash) and it was really good.

Also, tidbit:  the first F&F is almost an homage to Point Break.  Watch it and you'll see what I mean.

As for The Notebook; that's the exception to the rule.  I LOVE that movie. I've seen it like five times and I'd watch it again if it was on.  It's sappy, but I like it.

But the acting!  The transition of Michael from straight, moralistic military man to perhaps the most ruthless of all the heads of family is an irresistible arc.

The Godfather is indeed amazing, and worthy of everything that has been said about it.

Titanic is definitely well-made, but I've seen it enough, and there is no reason that it should be on any "must see" list.

I won't watch slasher movies (Friday the 13th, Saw, etc.).

I won't watch foreign language movies (whether or not with subtitles).

I'll generally steer clear of any movie that is more appropriately called a "film."

Every Quentin Tarantino movie I've seen I thought sucked, and many of those I haven't seen I think look stupid.

I won't watch Fast & Furious movies, and I've generally been done with superhero movies for at least 5-6 years (the problem here is that my wife likes those movies, so they turn up on my TV a lot as a "falling asleep" movie).  As a result of this, I know that the F&F movies are about the dumbest things ever made.

From 2000 to the present, I've seen only 19 of the 142 movies nominated for a best picture Oscar (obviously, I don't avoid them BECAUSE they're going to be nominated, so I'm not sure what to make of this).

I swear upside down and sideways that my wife and I watched the first Godfather movie sometime in the '90s.  She swears with equal vociferousness that she hasn't seen it.  Either way, neither of us has ever had any interest in seeing the second one.

Me three, but I find the story of the Titanic very intriguing, and the Jack/Rose story is good enough as background.

I went to see SPR in the theater with my wife and sister.  About 5 minutes into the opening D-Day scene, my wife got up and walked out.  I recall knowing what to expect, but she just couldn't handle it.  I went back in and told my sister what was going on, and she said she was staying.  I wanted to stay but felt like I couldn't abandon my wife, so I missed the movie, and I've never gone back and watched it (even though I still do).

I typically ignore most modern movies. The styles have changed to a point that they just aren't what I enjoy watching nowadays. I want to just sit and watch an enjoyable story. I don't want to feel like I'm in the middle of it. I don't want to have to constantly try and figure out what's real and what's just another mindfuck. I don't want to try and sort out who's doing what because it's so chaotic. I want to watch a story play out and see how the characters adapt and deal with it. Pretty straight forward, but not really what modern ADD audiences want, apparently.

I'm not far off on that. I would add some of the more recent developments that I'm not interested in - social justice and political correctness - to that as well, but it's the same idea.   If I feel like the characters would swear or be nude, then that's fine.   If it isn't believable, then it's not.

Avatar (top 1) gets watched in late November every year, and Titanic's viewing revolves around whichever Saturday night is closest to April 14th. RJ would have to keep that in mind.

I've come to really appreciate the Jack/Rose story. I used to complain about Cameron forcing a love story in the mix, but as I've gotten older, I've done a 180 on it. Jack and Rose's relationship was the only way for us to get a proper tour of the ship and see as much of it as we could in the three hours we had. It allowed for a constant but almost seamless comparison of the rich and the poor classes. I don't know what the Titanic movie would have been had it not included Jack and Rose. I suppose it could have been like 1958's A Night To Remember.

Fun fact about myself: I love the Titanic, and her sisters. When I was in 4th grade, I got a poem I wrote about the Titanic published in some poem book. I can't wait to see OceanGate's findings from the recent dives they've been doing.

I came here to say the same thing. That is a movie that is important to see…once. But I don’t know that anyone needs to watch it twice. Nor could I imagine wanting to. But it was an excellent film.

I go up and down about the Jack/Rose story.  I range from silly, but still well done, love story to compelling drama.  Either way, it's very well done, and it serves the other part of the movie well.  I don't think it was the only way to get the ship tour, but it was a legit way to do it, and I agree that the presentation of the stark contrast between classes was well done (albeit superficial, which is all you could reasonably expect from a movie like this).  The only part I don't really like is the stuff with modern-day Rose.

I always bristle at statements like this.  I've never heard of this movie, but why is it "important" to see?

Not to mention that for every seen with blood or gore you've got at lest 4 scenes with High-Beam Sally running around in her tank top. Or, Jessica Beil if reboots are more of your thing.

Reboots are not my thing, but Jessica Biel sure is!

I've watched "Saving Private Ryan" in the theater; I was on a date and the first 45 minutes or so was so intense I sweat through my shirt (embarrassing! Thankfully she was no better).  I've put off watching it again, even though it was excellent, just because it was that intense.

That's how I am with The Boy in Striped Pajamas. I'm content never seeing that again, despite it being good.

I came here to say the same thing. That is a movie that is important to see…once. But I don’t know that anyone needs to watch it twice. Nor could I imagine wanting to. But it was an excellent film.

I always bristle at statements like this.  I've never heard of this movie, but why is it "important" to see?

Some films, to me, have something extremely important to say. In raising my kids, To Kill a Mockingbird was practically required viewing. The discussion of it was part of their education.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is a film with a message. Without being too spoiler-y, it’s about a young boy in Nazi Germany who sneaks away and befriends a young boy in the prison camp. They talk and play in secret with the barbed wire fence between them.

Misery

Misery is great but I always turn off for the infamous hobbling scene. It's up there with Quint being eaten alive for scenes I cant watch / listen to.

Interesting topic. A couple thoughts.

I was terrified of 80s slasher films when I was a kid. Not sure why, don't recall any specific trauma that would trigger that. No longer terrified, but rarely have any interest in watching gory films. Funny enough, I randomly watched the Cinemasins video on Saw. Thought it looked interesting, ended up watching it and enjoyed it.

As a general topic, I really do not feel comfortable watching any footage from 9/11/01.

Also, there are fans of movies that "are so bad they're good", like The Room.  Fuck that, they are just bad.  I don't have time to watch all the good stuff I want to, I certainly won't spend time watching stuff that is bad.

Couldn't have said this any better for myself.

Misery is great but I always turn off for the infamous hobbling scene. It's up there with Quint being eaten alive for scenes I cant watch / listen to.

I read Misery before seeing the film. When Annie went to hobble Paul, I thought "wait, that's all she is going to do?"

I have never seen the Godfather films and probably won't.  Mafia films just aren't my bag.

I don't think of The Godfather films as "mafia films" any more than I think of Million Dollar Baby as a boxing film. It's just the backdrop. It is so much more than that.
