By impressive I assume you mean infuriating.

I don't know what the record for the longest running roulette (that reaches completion) is but it was no intention of mine to try to beat it. I just really such at hosting roulettes  :loser:

I know we are inundated with roulettes at the moment but remember, when I started this it was the only one running, and the first in some time.

Doesn't matter to me truthfully as I joined so late haha.

When this started in the first place I'd only been back a couple weeks, and couldn't have told you the difference between DTF roulette and Russian roulette.   :D

Without checking the maths here, I assume that leaves us in an 8 way tie.

I mean what a way to end the roulette, no one wins, no tie breaker, we all move on vowing to never take part in a twosuitsluke roulette ever again  :lol

Don't want to raise expectations too much but planning to get results out today!

I was thinking I might drip feed results, rather than do the whole thing in one post.

So I've decided to get my results out for this final round in a way that works for me. I'll basically be talking about the artist/submissions as a whole, followed by a little synopsis on each song, with scores.

I will say that this feels like one of the weakest rounds. I'm not sure if that is partly because I found it hard to finish the roulette, or maybe I found it hard because it was a little underwhelming.

Before going any further I just wanted to thank everyone for taking part in this roulette and being patient with how long this thing took. I'm aware that I'm far from the best host, so thanks for sticking it out.

Anyway, let's dive in and put you all out of your misery...

8th Place
Kingshmegland: Peter Gabriel - Digging in the Dirt / Don't Give Up / More Than This

If you'd asked me before this if I knew any Peter Gabriel songs, I would've said no. Turns out I do know Don't Give Up (don't we all?). This was a bold choice, but you had nothing to lose, so maybe not that bold. As I mentioned in my impressions, the whole overall sound here just feels too dated to me. I don't know how common knowledge it is, but 80s pop is pretty much the worst music imaginable for me. There are obviously some exceptions, but generally I can't stand anything with that 80s pop sound. These songs (particularly Don't Give Up) fall into that that trap, and struggle to pull themselves out of it. I tried not to let prior conceptions influence my thoughts on these songs but I think part of me couldn't help it.

Digging in the Dirt - To be fair, this feels slightly less dated.

6/10

Don't Give Up - I guess I know this song better than the others, and have heard it many times over the years. To me it sounds a bit like Sting or something. Yea, I'm not a fan.

6/10

More Than This - Yea, it's fine but I know I'll not seek this out again following the roulette.

6/10

Round score: 6/10
Overall score: 70.5

7th Place
Ariich: Fjokra - Psycho for the Sake of it / Love, Thrust, Burn / Get Amongst It / The Old Time Nook

A decidedly Ariich band, and one I can totally understand you sending. This band play a brand of quirky, genre bending, catchiness that I can certainly enjoy. I particularly like the little reggae breakdown in Psycho. I love reggae but haven't been sent anything remotely reggae in a roulette yet. I really like the guys voice, the fact we're always struggling to define what genre this is and the fact it's just the right level of weird. They also kind of remind me of Mindless Self Indulgence actually. I think if there have been more vocal hooks and bits that I enjoyed singing along to, this would've done really well.

Psycho for the Sake of it - Yea, I dig this, it's mixing those genres nicely.

8/10

Love, Thrust, Burn - Not quite as good, but definitely up my street. Solo is easily the highlight, love the tone.

7.5/10

Get Amongst It - Yea this is the one that's kinda like MSI.

7/10

The Old Time Nook - Don't even know what this reminds me of, maybe Diablo Swing Orchestra in places?

7/10

Round score: 7.375/10
Overall score: 70.875

6th Place
Nick_z: Skyclad - Salt on the Earth (Another Man's Poison) / Thinking Allowed / Civil War Dance / Still Spinning Shrapnel

Never heard of these guys but they were definitely one of the nicest surprises, and maybe you saved the best until last? They feel like a good mix of classic/folk/battle metal, and were maybe an influence on a lot of the battle metal that came out in the early 00s, I couldn't say as I don't know anything about the band.

I am quite picky with my folk/battle metal, and outside of the few bands I like, I tend not to explore the genre that much. The other side to their sound is a classic metal, Maiden/Priest-esque vibe. I can enjoy a bit of Priest and Maiden, but they are far from my favourite metal bands. The solos in these songs (especially the one in Salt on the Earth) really sell the band, and although nothing particularly new to my ears, are good solos. The riffs in general, are also pretty strong, with a lot of galloping riffs driving these songs.

Salt on the Earth (Another Man's Poison)- The highlight is the solo, but the outro riff is pretty cool.

7.5/10

Thinking Allowed - very Priest to me, the "Thinking Allowed" chorus even sounds like they're singing "Breaking the Law".

7.5/10

Civil War Dance - Good instrumentation, sounds pretty medieval even.

7/10

Still Spinning Shrapnel - Reminds me a bit of battle metal like Alestorm.

7/10

Round score: 7.25/10
Overall score: 71.5

5th Place
Wolfking: Omnium Gatherum - Reckoning / Frontiers / New Dynamic / Gods Go First

More straight up Melo-death from Wolfy, why change it up now. Another band, like others you've sent, that I'm aware of (and have been for a number of years) but never fully took the plunge with. This is another set of songs where they all kind of blend together when listening, so was hard to score. I wasn't too sold on the harsh vocals, however the melodic guitars, and the guitar tones, were really good.

Reckoning - Straight up Melo-death. I like the bits with the clean guitar tone here.

7.5/10

Frontiers - This almost gets a little warm and fuzzy in places. It does what it does really well. The outro solo is particularly sexy as well.

7.5/10

New Dynamic - I found this song to be the weakest of the 4 to be honest.

7/10

Gods Go First - Nothing too exciting, but solid.

7/10

Round score: 7.25/10
Overall score: 71.75

Well, even if it's technically not over yet - thank you Luke for running this. It was quite the long journey (I've wondered before if I somehow jinxed the thing, since it's the only roulette I've participated in so far  ;)) Hope all of the extra-forum stuff that you went/are going through is working out ok.

Glad you enjoyed Skyclad...the score is, well, right about where I sat all roulette long

I have to say I'm a little surprised you didn't know them. I thought they were relatively popular in the British metal scene, at least in the 90s. After Martin Walkyier left I think they had more of a low profile - haven't heard much from them/about them over the last few years. But in the 90s they had some pretty insane productivity, and I LOVE their stuff. They were never the luckiest, from a "commercial" standpoint, I think...they got caught up with Noise Records decline, and by the time they signed for Nuclear Blast in 2000 they had disappeared a bit (Folkemon is an ok album with some good songs, but not as good as what came before, imo)

But both their earlier thrashier/metal sound and the (relatively) more recent, folkier stuff is excellent. As I said in the PM, you might enjoy the Irrational Anthems album. I didn't include any songs from it, for runtime reasons (check the opener Inequality Street, a pretty irresistible folk-metal stomp).

Here's the end to your torture guys...

4th Place
Evermind: Árstíðir -  Ages / Cannon / Lover / Fruðŕlþægingin / Shades

I went to Iceland for the first time last year, and absolutely loved it. Before going I did a deep dive into some of the iconic Icelandic artists, as well as some lesser known ones. There is something quite special and unique about Icelandic artists, so this was a nice selection to listen to. I suppose the songs themselves weren't that special, but they have that certain something that do set them apart. Maybe it's the thought of relaxing in geothermal water, with an Icelandic landscape before me, beer in hand, that helps give these songs something extra. The obvious thing that I'm drawn to is the use of cello and violin in these songs. I tend to love that sound, especially when babds like Leprous have done it in the past.

I 100% have to be in the right mood/setting to fully enjoy and appreciate these songs. Most of the time I prefer listening to high energy music but there are times I just need something like this. Árstíðir are actually the sort of band my wife loves (and wished I listened to more of) so these would certainly score even better with her. The other thing a found a challenge in scoring these songs, was that they all kinda roll into one when I listen. It made scoring individually really difficult.

Ages - Simple yet beautiful.

7/10

Cannon - Love the strings and piano on this one.

7/10

Lover - This one has a bit more going on with it.

7/10

Fruðþægingin - This bring the only one sung in their native tongue didn't effect it, lyrics often wash over me anyway.

7/10

Shades - More of the same really.

7/10

Round score: 7/10
Overall score: 72

3rd Place
LithoJazzoSphere: Jeff Loomis - Escape Velocity / Tragedy and Harmony / The Ultimatum / Surrender

I really feel I should know more about Jeff Loomis, but I honestly don't. I've been aware of the name for years but Nevermore have been another one of those bands that have fallen in my blindspot. A band destined for me to say "why the fuck haven't I been all over these guys for years?". These songs pretty much stole the show from the off. I wasn't too sold on the female vocals on Tragedy, however the video game vibes of Escape Velocity and the cheeky guest vocals from Ihsahn (one of my faves) on Surrender more than made up for it. All up this is just great metal which shreds, has plenty of melody and makes me reach for my air guitar. The guitar is at the forefront and that is just fine with me. Add in a certain video game soundtrack vibe and it's gonna score well.

Escape Velocity - Pummelling drums and lots of shredding solos? It's pretty great.

8/10

Tragedy and Harmony - This was the weakest of the four for me, pretty much purely based on those vocals. Following on from an instrumental, that I liked more, they kinda left me feeling like this music is better suited as instrumental.

7/10

The Ultimatum - Similar shred fest to Escape Velocity, but not quite as good.

7.5/10

Surrender - I take it all back about the vocalist, as this features Ihsahn, and it pisses all over Tragedy. I feel his vocals just fit way better, of course I also just prefer them.

8/10

Round score: 7.625/10

2nd Place
Buddyhunter1: Parannoul - White Ceiling / Age of Fluctuation

I have actually sampled these guys, I think last year, due to the album these songs were taken from being rated highly on RYM. I also think there is a crossover with King Gizzard fans, although that doesn't always bode well as lots of stuff that's popular on the Gizz reddit is not for me. So, this was quite an interesting submission and I particularly liked the fresh sound on the vocal delivery, different to what I usually listen to for sure. I wasn't too sold on the drum sound on White Ceiling and on the whole these songs seemed to drag a fair bit. I'm sorry to say that this wasn't enough to seal the win for you. I do feel bad as you were King of the Hill all the way through this. I don't listen to a ton of music sung in languages I can't personally speak, but of those I do, I really prefer the sound of Asian vocals.

White Ceiling - Not sure on the drum sound here, it's kinda grating at times.

7/10

Age of Fluctuation - I feel there's just something off about the production that doesn't sit well with me. I definitely prefer the more chill parts of this song.

7/10

1st Place
TAC: Warfect - Into the Fray / Pestilence / Witch Burner

I see you just went straight thrash for this final round. I can respect that, even if I longed for more stuff like Autonoesis. Warfect remind me of those early thrash albums that were proto-death metal, in particular bands like Kreator, but also Possessed. I don't have a great deal to say about the full on thrash fest, other than it's pretty decent. I have been digging into some thrash classics over the last few years, but nothing really wowed me here. It's enough that I'll at least explore the album, but I probably won't go much further than that.

Into the Fray - The intro grew on me, and there are some blistering riffs here. Definitely a bit Kreator, with that death/thrash sound. That spoken word bit about Russian nuclear submarines could be straight off a Megadeth album, Dave loves stuff like that :lol

7.5/10

Pestilence - Pretty straight up thrash here.

7/10

Witch Burner - Not a lot to say, it's thrash.

7/10

Round score: 7.16/10
Overall score: 74.66

Final Standings:
TAC - 74.66
Buddyhunter1 - 73.5
LithoJazzoSphere - 73.125
Evermind - 72
Wolfking - 71.75
Nick - 71.5
Ariich - 70.875
King - 70.5

Here we are at the end and I just feel I have an overriding need to apologise for this roulette :lol

Thanks again for participating everyone, and commiserations to Buddy for leading this thing for almost the entire roulette only to lose out in the end. Tim, congratulations as you really deserved the win. Autonoesis really won it for you towards the end.

I've come away with a playlist full of albums to check out. Everyone (as is often the case) was able to send me something I loved and I will be digging into these bands over the next few years at least.

Maybe my next roulette will run more smoothly than this one and I'll have developed my write up skills, but it's unlikely.

Love you all, peace out, and until then...
