HOF: The Clientele - The House Always Wins
The dreamy, ethereal vibe of this really reminds me of another band but I can't quite place it. I don't listen to a great deal of music like this, but this is really pleasant. I can hear a classic rock influence in here, like all those famous 60s bands, as well as 90s stuff like Brit Pop. It's quite simple and relies quite heavily on those breathy vocals, which I have no problem with. This impressed me enough that I will check out at least one album, see how it fits. I don't find I have a great deal to say about it, other than it's a style that I find myself slowly being drawn towards, even though I'm not fully invested in it...yet.
6.5/10
Hey, I'm just glad you're interested in hearing more! It's not really a style I listen to much myself, but they are a great band. This particular song just happens to be one I've been listening to a bunch lately, and it's been hitting me in the right spot for whatever reason.
I think you nailed the description of their style. It's somewhere in between 60s rock and Brit-pop, maybe a bit like early Radiohead. But that's moreso on their first two albums, which both have this dreamy, kind of lo-fi production. Almost like you are listening to an AM radio station. After that they became a bit more modern sounding and stylistically drifted off towards orchestral/baroque pop with an Indy rock vibe, a little folky at times too. I like those first two albums a lot (this song is from their second album The Violet Hour), but their later stuff is a bit more accessible. If you liked this, probably should start with The Violet Hour or the first one, Suburban Light. My favorite albums from them are Strange Geometry and Music for the Age of Miracles, which are both worth checking out even if you don't like either of the first two.
I guess now I have to think of something else to send!
