I think the problem is that I didn't watch much TV in the 90s.  And it breaks the George Carlin rule of network TV.  So I was left to Sherlock Holmesing "no matter how improbable" and the fact that it came right after the 90s and stylistically hints at a few 90s sounds in spots.

TAC: 8. Musically this has lots of layers and sounds like jazz but how I like my jazz, not actually that much like jazz at all. Also, did I hear a ridiculous lyric thrown around here, was hard to tell.



I deleted the notes I was making whilst preparing the first impressions, but in reference to the ridiculous lyrics, did I hear them scream "IT'S NUTRITIOUSSSSSSSSS" at one point?

Yep, Luke, mine too...did I guess the mystery band right? 

Oh yea, it was Enslaved. The album cover gave me Frost Vibes, even down to the band logo. Also apparently Ivar contributed to the first album (according to wiki). Enslaved do have plenty of clean vocals peppered throughout they're catalogue to be fair and the keys at the end of Up North reminded me a lot of Sacred Horse, from the 3:00 mark.

Oh wow.    I should have stuck with the melodic death metal.  I don't understand the weird synths and vocals comment though personally.  Jeff Martin is one of the greatest voices IMO.

Those were my first impressions and definitely to be taken with a pinch of salt. I generally don't know what I'm talking about half the time.

Yeah, he's superb.  I'm not sure if the weird synths or dating he mentions is from the 90s string patches or the industrial/trip-hop drum loops.  If I redid the song I would change that to real orchestration and have a beefier rhythm guitar tone, but the bones of the song are great, especially the vocals and the live drums.  The ending piano is a little odd too, but it sounds a little bit like the ending of NIN's "Closer", so it gets a pass.

I always loved that piano at the end.  I guess its just one of those special tunes that hit me.  I should not be surprised as everytime I've sent it its received an average score.  The atmosphere of it also is just immense.  Such an amazing, unique band.

I'm guessing (hoping) things will pick up a bit after new year's.  Board activity in general has been down lately, I imagine most people are going through similar holiday/end of year busyness, including me.  In particular I hope 425 either has a more favorable schedule then or maybe can put his roulette on hiatus.  I have a mounting list of songs I want to send, and need a new roulette victim for them.

Just need to find some time to sit down and work on write ups. I'm pretty set on my rating of most of the songs, as usual it's just putting it into words that I suck at.
