Another round of new albums. I miss the old Silversun Pickups sound, when they reminded me of the Smashing Pumpkins with less obnoxious vocals. Some good moments, but they're still treading water in their newer sound.
Weyes Blood has what I previously considered "the Lana Del Rey problem", before a few of her songs started connecting with me. It's well-made, pleasant, beautiful music, and if I squint I can see how it's adjacent to other stuff I love, but it's not moving me right now. And it doesn't have Lana's endearing quirky irreverence. I swear, she has some of the softest F-bombs in recorded music history. "Twin Flame" is probably the song that has the most chance of being a regular on my playlists though, we'll have to see.
I enjoy Minuit Machine's sort of "chill EBM" sound. Definitely another one out of DTF's normal range though.
I've been having a renaissance with Blind Guardian in recent years. They were one of the earlier power metal bands I listened to, but grew to not like Hansi's voice for quite some time. I think I was partially annoyed because of him being in Demons & Wizards, at a point at which I was becoming a total Matt Barlow fanboy. But now I've come back around on it in the last years. Really solid album. "Architects of Doom" is just pure awesome. Hansi is cheating by having three of my favorite vocalists as part of his backing choir for this album though.
