Blasted this classic on my way into work this morning. Had to message a group of buddies to basically say, 'Is there any better feeling than singing the final part of Chop Suey! as loud as you possibly can, with a group of like minded friends?' I'm not sure there is.

Toxicity is indeed a great album, but I can't stand Chop Suey! with or without its current meme status. :lol I can see the appeal in the choruses but the verses are just... too annoying and impossible to take seriously. While I certainly wouldn't say SOAD is an underrated band, part of me feels like they'd be even more respected if that wasn't the song people immediately thought of when they're mentioned. B.Y.O.B. is much better as far as their "hits" are concerned, imo.

As far as my favorites from Toxicity are concerned, I'd probably go with Needles, Deer Dance, and Aerials.

I like B.Y.O.B, but I'd surely take Chop Suey! over it...You might be right, though, about the "general" public's perception...There is so much more than the "nu metal" tag that was assigned to them (especially after Toxicity).

Great picks for the favorites, btw...Those are mine too, although I'd add, well, Chop Suey!  and Science (its chorus' melody, in a VERY weird way, reminds me of Rush's The Body Electric). The title-track (overplayed as it may be) is great too.

I agree that Chop Suey is overplayed and for the longest time I couldn't even really listen to it. It's not the best song on the album (my fave is Prison Song) BUT there is something incredibly special about being in a crowd of people all singing the final part of Chop Suey with all they've got.

I've been to many a rock night/club in my time and would roll my eyes when Chop Suey was played, but by the end I would be belting it out surrounded by friends old and new. For that, I think it is incredible.

What made me smile this morning was how oblivious I was to how much of a political record this is, back when I got into the band. So much of the lyrical content went over my head (not that I claim to understand all of what they are singing about even now  :lol ).

I listened to Toxicity a lot when it came out, but man, I can't remember the last time I listened to anything from SOAD.  The thing I found the most interesting about Toxicity is that it sounded like a metal version of Fiddler On the Roof.  By the time Mesmerize/Hypnotize came out, I was over them because Daren decided he needed to sing as much if not more than Serj, and I didn't take Daren seriously as a singer, nor did I think their "message" was clear or coherent.  That's just me though.

All that said, Bounce is easily my favorite song of theirs.  :metal

Yep, definitely too much singing from Daron, but there are some true gems in Mezmerize/Hypnotize too...

Hypnotize ruined them for me.  On that album it feels like Daron actually becomes the lead vocalist.  I used to listen to them a fair amount before that, but now even Serj's voice hasn't aged well for me, he sounds like a cartoon character too much of the time.  Still a few songs I don't mind every once in awhile though.

Oh hell yes. I bought that when it came out.

I saw Andy McCoy's band Shooting Gallery open for Kiss on their Revenge club tour in '92 and they turned in one of the Top 3 opening sets I've ever seen.

Monroe has a new album out on Friday and the first three songs that have been released have been great so far have been excellent.

His band is excellent and has been together for years. Hanoi bassist Sam Yaffa is part of his band.

I've not gotten around to listening to Ritual but I know I've got it queued up on a Spotify playlist somewhere. I remember being really underwhelmed with Dark Ages but it's grown on me now and I'd pick it over most other Soulfly albums, including their debut.

Roots and The Black Halo are obviously great  :hefdaddy

Never heard of Conception, worth checking out?

Time to see if this is any better than I remember it being...

Conception is awesome...Khan's band prior to joining Kamelot.  Prog/power metal, and his voice just soars on those albums.

I loved Roots when it came out when I was in high school, but haven't listened to it much since then.  I've found myself really getting back into it again.

Getting round to checking out The Others by Lustmord now. I've been interested in this album A) because it's a Pelagic Records release, and B) that roster of bands! Holy Fuck.

I didn't know anything about Lustmord, but apparently this is a remix of his album Others, from 2008. But the bands/artists handling the remixes?

Enslaved. MONO. Ihsahn. Ulver. The Ocean. Godflesh. Steve Von Till. And that's not even half of the featured artists.
