Over the last couple of days:

The lesser know (I think) from the last row - Anomalie "Tranceformation" is quite cool, I'm reading they were previously more on the black metal side of things, but this record from last year is not particularly extreme, and it has a very interesting dark mood throughout. The bottom right one is "Holoceno", by Brazilian band Papangu. I think somebody here recommended it sometime last year. It's quite a trip of an album. I guess it can be broadly defined "progressive metal". It's quirky and weird, and it intrigued me. I'll be revisiting...

Really enjoyed this EP, now working backwards since I haven't listened to this band in a while.

I'm semi-obsessed with Shadow of a Fallen Star (thanks again, Tim! ). Such a good record. You can tell you from the acoustic intro already that you are in for something tasty - there's something about the "arcane" mood it creates. The whole album has a bit of that feel, actually - it sounds nostalgic but not just a rehash of NWOBHM. And the guitar work is excellent (among many things, I love the harmonies at the very end of The Artifice...but, really, there are beautiful leads all over)

Checked out The Cauldron and the Cross for the first time too. Only one listen - it's very good too, but I get the impression Shadow...is a better record, especially in the vocal melodies. I haven't spent as much time with it, though, so this is subject to change  ;D

I'll have to try the debut too...

Mad House is a killer song! Shame the opening riff doesn't get repeated later in the song though.

The debut is freaking awesome. Kind of like if Def Leppard's 1st album had a baby with Iron Maiden's 1st album.

:tup Will check it out soon...

Incidentally, I always prefer physical copies, but these are a little harder to come by. And their Bandcamp page has the whole (digital) discography for about $25, including a couple of EPs...I'm tempted...

Finally gave Transatlantic a spin and started on their second album. This sounds condescending but it's a really good record to work to! Been spinning it today and almost finished, really enjoyed it. Will probably go back to album 1 and start there later tonight.

Transatlantic will probably always be one of my favorite bands solely for their second and third albums (Bridge Across Forever and The Whirlwind). SMPTe is pretty good, and I've not yet had any desire to go back to Kaleidoscope or The Absolute Universe (though they sounded good enough from what I remember), but BAF and TW are perfect in my eyes, and both of them are probably in my Top 5 favorite albums of all time.

Damn, what a nice listen this was. More accessible than their earlier stuff.
The last song, Patient Zero was amazing. It goes from Fates Warning (with Tony Martin) to Fields Of The Nephilim.
This song has potential for SOTY.

I have their first couple of album and yeah pretty decent but not very accessible.  Will have to check this one then.
