A stone cold classic. What better way to start an album than those vocals. A friend and I were talking the other day and he said 90s Anselmo is his favourite vocalist of all time. Each 90s Pantera album just got more extreme and Phil's vocals were probably a big driving force behind that.

Probably wouldn't recommend the Celtic Frost to you, but damn that's a good one. Another one I've had on CD years and never really dived into.

Sign Of The Winner has a lot of that speedy double bass thing. I love their drummer. He is amazing on Dust To Dust, some of the best double bass drumming I've ever heard.

Funny you mention Helloween. I actually discovered them through Kai Hansen's website in the early 2000's. This was before Dust To Dust came out. Apparently, he guested on their first album, so I checked it out and went from there.

I do have a Celtic Frost story. In early 1987, Celtic Frost and Flotsam & Jetsam were playing a small club in Providence. A friend of mine (huge Metallica fan) had their first album due to Newsted being on it, and he wanted to go. For whatever reason, CF didn't play, so we got a headline gig from F&J! My love for them started that night.

I've actually never heard CF's older stuff so that seems like a funny pair up based on Monotheist.

Kai Hansen having a connection with Heavenly is no surprise too. I heard a couple of blatant Gamma Ray rip offs too lol. Cool that Piet is singing on that track too.

Yep, it's a little unsettling...

The album is a solid slab of death-doom, though...the second track Hope/Renaissance, in particular, is really good.

It had Bodom-esque vocals which would've been fine if it had Bodom-esque music supporting them.

If I'm going to listen to vocals like that, I'm going to need the music to make it worth it, and well, this didn't do that.

Btw, this kind of death metal is not my go-to either, usually. Sometimes, though, it “works”, and this one just really hit the spot. It’s riffy and punchy in the right ways and grabs my attention the whole time…
