Outside of Metallica, that's the best one of the lot.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

I'll give it a shot. Spotify says Burial in the Sky is a similar artist, and their latest was great.

I still find this to be so incredibly overrated. I've listened to all of Deafheaven's albums, many times, and to be honest Ordinary Corrupt Human Love is the only one I come back to. That album is incredible and superior to Sunbather in every way, as far as I'm concerned. I get this album brought black metal to a new crowd but still. It just doesn't do it for me.

It's in my list of "albums to check out". I've listened to it once when it came out, but I didn't pay too much attention, so I don't actually remember much  :)

Thanks for reminding me!

Burial in the Sky was super-tasty, last year. Indeed, there was a good number of "tech-y" death metal albums I enjoyed in 2021.

...and while I'm at it, I'm adding this to the mix:

Godless Truth, came out a few months ago, from the Czech Republic. Technical, yes, but very fluid and chock full of fantastic riffs and solos. I mean, take a listen to the riff in Breathe Fire!

burial in the sky last year did nothing for me and aethereus is a good bit heavier (and does not own a saxophone) but is way more up my alley rn

I totally agree. I'll add that Godless Truth album to my 2022 playlist. Cheers dude.

It's a thing of beauty! If we're on the subject of great progressive/tech metal from last year, did you check out this beauty?..

I sure did! It's completely bonkers (not so much in terms of heaviness, but for the sheer amount of notes!), but it's pretty great. And that fretless bass...

Got it  :) I thought you saying (and does not own a saxophone) while praising Aethereus vs. Burial in the Sky was an indication of your disdain for the instrument, but I guess it was more like despite that

...and since we are on some sort of a death metal roll:

Atvm - Famine, Putrid and Fucking Endless

Yes, I know, weird cover art, name and title...but this is the most fun I had listening to a death metal record in a while. Fun not as in "this is funny" - fun as in this is full of truly entertaining twists and turns, always keeping you guessing, but in a coherent way. The band is from the UK, and this came out last year. It's technical death metal, but more in an old-school type of way - not the thousand-mile-an-hour-notes kind of way. Lots of cool things going on, and it sounds great. A tad over-long, maybe, but great stuff.

Listening to the first song Nick, and this is really cool. I love the sound. There's so much space between the instruments.

This was quite high up in my rankings last year at one point, but it dropped right off. Just checked my last.fm and apparently I haven't spun it since August. It's definitely a cool album and I might spin it tonight, along with that First Fragment.

Exactly. The album definitely "breathes" - which is not quite as common as it used to be.
