Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Just how good is the guitar-work on this?? One of my very favorite melodic hard-rock albums...

Michael Romeo- War of the Worlds pt. 2.

There's no doubt this makes my top 20 of the year! Yeah it sounds like Symphony X because that's how Mike writes and having Dino on vocals makes it feel like a new Sym X album, and a KICK ASS one at that! At times it feels like it has some Damnation Game vibes. Love it!  The songs are so catchy.  :metal

This sure is a nice batch! (also a reminder I have to do some F&J homework...haven't really explored the most recent albums, and I know they've been repeatedly praised here...)

I mentioned this album in my Top 50 but ended up giving the slot to a couple of other Slamer albums - in hindsight this one probably should've made it.

The production he gets on a small budget is about as good as it gets and the playing is always melodic and tasteful.

Yeah, full credit to Brent for turning me onto Slamer. He's such a tasteful guitar play and an amazing tone.

I'll go back to your Top 50 when I have some time, but do you have have a couple of recommendations for albums he plays on? I know his "main" band was Streets and then he played in a band called Seventh Key, or something like that...?

Yes, that tone, my goodness....full, smooth and with just the right amount of crunch in the riffs...

The first Streets album was a bit rough around the edges so I would go with Crimes In Mind ...........features Steve Walsh from Kansas.  And yeah - the other album I mentioned in my top 50 was The Raging Fire from Seventh Key.

Those are probably his best for consistency.  One of the better tracks on the first Streets album was If Love Should Go and there is a nice version of that as a bonus track on the very rare Japanese version of Slaves Of The New World.   The first Steelhouse Lane album is worth a listen too but if you have a big AOR/melodic rock collection you probably have many of the songs on that album as they were largely songs he had already given to other artists prior.   The other Seventh Key stuff is also worth tracking down.

He played most of the solos on Cherry Pie :)

Other than that , some people like his real early stuff from City Boy - never really got around to giving it a good listen but I have the album The Day The Earth Caught Fire , so presumably that's the one I decided was more my taste.

One old , rare Frontiers release that was also popular was the solo album he did for Terry Brock - Diamond Blue.

That should get you started :)

Inspired by the current listening habits thread.

This weekend I've been digging into the early days of the Iron Maiden discography: Iron Maiden, Killers, Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind. Plus the Early Days DVD. None of these are among my favorite Maiden records, but Piece of Mind sure as hell sounded great after a while. Particularly Still Life, Sun and Steel, and To Tame a Land have grown on me. The Dortmund tracks from that DVD were also cool, very nice to see a Flight of Icarus live version from '83.

Those Hammersmith ‘82 and Dortmund ‘83 shows are awesome!

Indeed they are! Gonna watch Hammersmith now, thereby continuing my Early Days exploration. Listened to some of the BBC Archives and early tracks from Best of the B-sides yesterday. Bruce's energy on these early concerts is mindblowing.

The two songs that have been released are great.  The new singer is a major upgrade.

Going thru my B and C list albums of 2012:

That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".
