Devin Townsend Project - Epicloud

This is like my fifth attempt in 10+ years of trying to get into Devin Townsend. I like this album.

Thanks! I’ll check that out at work tomorrow. Seems like Transcendence is popular.

Devin Townsend Project - Epicloud

This is like my fifth attempt in 10+ years of trying to get into Devin Townsend. I like this album.

I've told this story a LOT:  I HATED Devin Townsend.  I heard him on Vai's album and thought it was just noise.  Then I heard the live "Deep Peace" from By A Thread, and decided to read his book.  Which I LOVED.  Really gave me insight to this guy, who is still weird, still walks to his own drummer, but has some depth beyond the guy who looked like a spider on the Tonight Show making a fool of himself and was immature enough to take a dump in Vai's guitar case (even he'd say that).

Then I got into the DTP albums, especially the ones with Anneke van Giersbergen (who I LOVE).  And it all sort of sunk in.  I still don't like Strapping Young Lad, but even the Vai album is something I listen to now ("Touching Tongues" is amazing).

I just bought the Sky Blue/Z2 double set.  The Ziltoid stuff is not stuff I listen to a lot (though I think I'm going to search out the non-dialogue version) but Sky Blue is excellent.

I still think he ruins that Vai album, but even without him it’s nowhere near Vai’s best work.

I can listen to Devin’s “calmer” work. I played Ghost a couple of weeks ago, but the wall of sound approach is a bit too much for me and the screamy stuff is just a no no.

He’s a musical genius though.

Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

First thing I've heard from them.  It's OK.  It's not blowing me away.

Hey hefdaddy did you like Ants From Up There? My album of the year so far and I wouldn’t be surprised if it remained so for the rest of the year.

Doctor Smoke - "Dreamers and the Dead"

Fun record from last year. Hard rock/metal with some NWOBHM influence, and a singer that at times sounds like a more melodic Dave Mustaine, if that makes any sense. Good riffs and cool, energetic drumming (check out, for example, Reborn into Darkness or Out of Time). Could use a little more variety, but it's a fun listen and just about the right length.

He’s a musical genius though.

I was vaguely aware of his "debut" alongside Steve Vai (I didn't follow Vai all that much, but I remember magazines at the time were talking about this talented and crazy-looking guy on the Sex and Religion album), but then became a relatively big fan around the time Strapping Young Lad's City came out, and then (even more so) Ocean Machine. I also enjoyed his solo album Infinity and really liked Terria. Then he kind of lost me a bit, except for Addicted, which to me remains one of his most enjoyable records. Admittedly, I haven't paid a whole lot of attention to his more recent output, so maybe I should amend that...

Yeah, I liked it, but not as much as you apparently did.  But it was really good.
