I bought Alice In Hell when it came out, but I never followed up with them. I remember liking that album though.

Nick is right, they are pretty inconsistent.  A lot of missed opportunities.  The early couple are pretty damn decent though.  I should go through the CD's I have from them, again another one I haven't given a lot of time to.

Hey Nick, great call on the Subterranean EP, that's fucking 20 minutes of beautiful melodic death metal.  Really enjoyed it and really enjoyed the vocalist too.  Wonderful melodies and nice full production.  The extra tracks are well worth checking out.  Murders sounded pretty damn cool with the growls.

 :tup

And absolutely yes to the production. I am hopelessly in love with Fredrik Nordström's productions around that time, especially the guitar sound. Take The Jester Race - the leads, too, sound so beefy!

I only ever bought Alice in Hell and Never, Neverland. Alice in Hell is a great album.

I saw Annihilator in a club around 1991. And I once sat next to Jeff Waters at an Alice Cooper concert.

I have the original, it's solid.  I thought this was a new album not a reworking but I don't really follow Annihilator. The original had some cool guests.  Looking at Metal 2, it has the same guests guitarists??  So what only parts of the songs were re-done?

Pretty sure Mangini did the original.

Correct.  He played on a couple of Annihilator albums.

Having a listen to the original cd.....maybe solid is giving it too much credit.

Correct.  He played on a couple of Annihilator albums.

Having a listen to the original cd.....maybe solid is giving it too much credit.

I went hunting for the original so I could do a little compare. Not feeling the original at all. Mangini's drums sound bland and lifeless. Lacking emotion (I know he gets that criticism sometimes, but it is the first time I have felt it). It seems that Lombardo's take is pretty close to MM's but Dave's sound so much stronger and punchy. Not really liking that Padden guy after hearing Stu's take. Stu literally sounds like a different guy on every song. Downright Dominate he literally sounds like Anselmo. That is a heck of Pantera song right there (not a real Pantera song).

Also, Jeff had Mike Fraser (a legit mixing engineer) handle this mix and the sound seems so much better. So yeah, I have no desire to get a hold of the original.

On a side note, I guess Jeff lost the master tapes for Operation Annihilation so it was not included. He replaced it with Van Halen's Romeo Delight and I guess Alexi had recorded the solo for it so he has another solo on the album. He's not credited that I can see but Jeff said the solo is Alexi. He also added an Exciter cover, Heavy Metal Maniac.

I also saw in an interview that he only gave Stu and Dave 3 takes per song to nail their parts. That's insane and shows how good both are because they both sound fantastic. Dave also used his Reign In Blood ride cymbal on this album, I guess. Lots of nuggets I'm finding.
beul ni teh efac = Lube In The Face / That has to be wrong.  :lol / EDIT: Oh, it's Blue! I'm an idiot.
Pardon the interruption, but I just had to run in and celebrate the majesty of Lube in the Face as highest moment in roulette history

Moon Tooth - Phototroph

Modern-ish hard rock/metal with progressive tendencies. At times it almost reminds of Fair to Midland, although not as as good or eclectic. Really enjoyed it, though. Guitar player is Nick Lee, also with Riot V (!). Album closes on a super-high note with the title-track.

Just finished up listening to this and it's really good. Serious top 20 album contender.

Loads of new releases today so I'll be working my way through:

James LaBrie - BeauShade of Grey
Blut Aus Nord - Disharmonium - Undreamable Abysses
Cave In - Heavy Pendulum
Malevolence - Malicious Intent
Septicflesh - Modern Primitive

Despite being on this forum I've never actually listened to the entire DT discography,

Wow, that's interesting!

You’ll find that most people here don’t actually like Dream Theater that much!!!

Altesia- Embryos - thanks Daily Doug. Excellent stuff.

Badlands - s/t

Britny Fox - Boys In Heat

Iris Divine - Mercurial

This was a nice surprise - came out today and I had no idea until yesterday. I had really liked their previous, The Static and the Noise, with that sound at the intersection of prog metal, King's X-esque sense of groove and melody, and some alternative metal.

I'm enjoying this one a ton. Only one listen, but it sounds like they upped both the modern groove and the proggy, melodic stuff. At times they really let loose, power-trio style, and it's a joy. The first two songs are bit on the "modern" side, and just warming things up (although the chorus in Silver Tongued Lie is great). The third song, Thirteen, is fantastic. There's also a cool instrumental - Death by Consensus - that has some great riffing before suddenly opening up to a breezy, almost AOR-sounding melodic middle section.

Good stuff. I'll be revisiting, for sure...
