been checking out some of cursive's mid-period albums as i've never really familiarized myself with em (though i think i have heard them all before...)
happy hollow: i get what this album is trying to do but it's a crushing 14 tracks long and a lot of it blends together, the concept isn't super compelling to me & the production is... rough. i really like big bang and there's some other solid tracks here but this doesn't do it for me
mama i'm swollen: oh this is. really good. maybe their best besides the ugly organ tbh. the sound is a bit toned down but as emotional as ever and the concept + its real-life implications for kasher make it compelling on both a music and lyrical level and it's just really good? of course it's the one released in 2009
i am gemini: i... kinda like this one, more than happy hollow at least, but it feels a bit flat musically and the concept is... very bad. very very bad. kasher said he wrote it as a musical and you can tell from how incohesive the songs are but also did you need to spend two songs on a game of hide and seek at the starts? i get what it's a metaphor for but it doesn't -mean- anything and it's slow-paced and small in scope and. ugh. soured me on the whole things tbh. it's musically similar enough to their standard fare but not really special on that front, the sun and moon is prooobably the best song and even then it's not that special
so yeah i'm getting the middle of these three and probably not caring too much about the other two, i think
also i've heard domestica plenty as well. it does absolutely nothing for me. i don't get it
