Thy Catafalque Thread - New single, Néma vermek
« on: August 23, 2021, 02:28:02 PM »
I can't find a thread anywhere for this great, great band. I guess the best way to describe them is a Hungarian, avant garde/black/folk metal band? They have a really great sound and so many incredible albums. This years release Vadak, is easily a top 10 contender for me.

I've just seen on Facebook that they played their first ever gig last Saturday!

I love that, after all this time, and all the music Tamas has put out, they were able to pull off a show like this. Would've loved to have been there, must've been one hell of an experience!!

Great project. Sgurr, Regenteg and Roka Hasa Radio are their best.

Photos from that gig look interesting, though where the hell are the keyboards? Thy Catafalque ain't nothin' without keyboards!

Very cool!

I'm relatively new to Thy Catafalque. The name kept popping up over the years and for some reason I never got around to checking them (him?) out.

Then I finally tried with Naiv, last year, and I thought it was fantastic. I'm still in "discovery" phase, so it's a bit early for me to rank stuff. Vadak is great too, for sure. Rengeteg  and Meta particularly caught my attention. But, again, I haven't even gone through all the albums yet.

One thing that stands out is how their music manages to be catchy and cohesive, despite how varied and out-there it is. Not something that can be said for all "avant-garde" metal (whatever that label means...)

I remember discovering them when Meta came out, back in '16. I was intrigued by the album cover and didn't regret it. It's my favourite album of theirs. I was a little underwhelmed by Naiv, but think Vadak is superb. Quick ranking? Why not...

Meta
Vadak
Róka Hasa Rádió
Rengeteg
Sgůrr
Tűnő Idő Tárlat
Naiv
Geometria

The new albums haven't been my favorites - their older albums had an otherworldly, almost alien quality to them that the new stuff doesn't really have. Less interesting production too, imo.

Speaking of production though, Tűnő Idő Tárlat is only at the bottom because of how awful the original album sounds. If you use the Zapor re-recordings that came out last year, that jumps up one or two slots.

From Facebook...

Dear people!
Season of Mist are releasing a Blu-ray, containing our very first live show ever, which took place at the Fekete Zaj Festival in the Mátra mountains in August, 2021. The entire performance was beautifully captured and shall be released on November 25, 2022.
Besides the Blu-ray, the live show will also be available on an exclusive media book and double vinyl in various colours. Pre-orders are now live here: https://redirect.season-of-mist.com/TCMezolit

Mastermind Tamás Kátai comments: "Last August a unique and magical event took place at Fekete Zaj Festival. 26 musicians performed 15 Thy Catafalque songs in front of a sold out festival and sparked the live carnation of the project that had been a mere studio entity for 23 years. The concert has been recorded and will be released in November. Re-live the night - this will never happen again in such form."
Title track video in the comments.

I'm definitely looking forward to this, even more so after hearing the new live single...

This sounds great. I love the really distinctive sound this band has. I guess a new album incoming but I don't think Tamás has announced anything yet.

It's definitely from a new album. Called Alföld it looks like.

I’m not sure if it’s because there’s been some really stellar releases recently, but this new album is doing little for me. Like, it’s undeniably Thy Catafalque sounding, but none of it is really grabbing me.

I reckon I’ll revisit in a month or so, it just seems to be missing that special something.

I've only listened to it once but yeah it wasn't very impressive. Thy Catafalque doing a less atmospheric, straightforward metal album just... isn't what I want from the project. :P Hopefully he's gotten it out of his system and the next album will play towards the project's strengths and distinct qualities more.

And I wouldn't be complaining about this if the music were better, but man I'm sick of that drum sound he's been using for the past three albums.

I’m sure I’ll be able to hear it now you’ve mentioned it, but I never had any problem with the drum sound. You’re right about a straight up metal album not being what you are looking for from the band.

I absolutely adore Meta, and the only release since then that has come close is Vadak. They have been quite hit and miss in the last 5 years, but also a steady flow of regular releases so can’t complain.

Thy Catafalque are actually touring! Not in my country yet, but apparently more dates to be added...
