Yes.

I'm now hesitant to say The Flower Kings since they've been mentioned a lot. Not long after the first Transatlantic record I gave a Flower Kings record a go and I couldn't find anything to like about it.

Yes - 1970's era and anything with Steve Howe on it, can't stand his guitar tones.
Leprous, Spock's Beard and Haken, can't stand the vocals.
Genesis and any 1970's prog rock, never clicked for me no matter how many times I've tried.

Rush

there, I said it

You're dead to Joe.   :lol

For me, it's easily Haken.  Honorable mentions to:

Porcupine Tree
Steven Wilson
Pain of Salvation
Between the Buried and Me
King Crimson

Emerson, Lake & Palmer

It was the summer of 2009 that I started getting into the 70s prog rock. I fell in love with Genesis, Yes, Van der Graaf Generator and Gentle Giant, but for some reason, ELP didn't click. At all. And it still doesn't.

Fates Warning - totally uninteresting to me
Marillion - meh
Porcupine Tree - can't say I dislike them, but most their stuff don't attract me much
Jethro Tull apart from Thick as a Brick (dig that album)
Meshuggah - like a song here and there, but in general they bore me

I probably like too many Fates Warning songs for them to qualify, but I do find a lot of their music monotonous. I like a lot of it, but get bored with it.

Does Radiohead count?

I never understood why albums like OK Computer or Kid A are considered masterpieces or revolutionary. Especially OK Computer has a bunch of nice, interesting brit pop songs, but revolutionary? I don't know...

Between the Buried and Me

I've never tried to force myself to like a band more.

Stuff like Haken is close but I do have a soft spot for a few albums. Aquarius and the 80s sounding one specifically.

Radiohead falls under the "awesome" genre more than the prog one.

I almost put them down.

Tool would also be one.

I've never really seen Radiohead as a prog band.  They don't count.

Another one for me would be Jethro Tull.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Ah, I had forgotten the most horrendous of all: Sons of Apollo.

So bad that I even forget that it exists (fortunately).

I think the idea is to talk about highly regarded prog bands that you can’t get into.  I think most people found Sons Of Apollo to be pretty average (at best).  Not everyone of course, I’m sure there’s the odd person who loves those albums but I would be shocked if we ever hear another one!

Steven Wilson and anything Steven Wilson related.
This for me.  I know he's widely considered to be super-talented.  But, his music does absolutely nothing for me.

Aren't people as excited about the band as they were when the debut came out? I did not know that.

Makes this a weird question to answer. If you don’t like them, how can you judge whether a band is the “best.”

I think I'm the first to say this in this thread, so maybe not so well-regarded, but I once gave Devin Townsend a chance (with three DTP albums I bought used at a local FYE many many years ago), and I just could NOT get into it. The three albums I got were Ki, Deconstruction, and Ghost.

I've since not given him a chance at all as my first experiences with his music were pretty grating, IIRC, so I've just not gone back, despite how much I see/read about him and his music, and his work seems to be fairly popular, at least among some prog/metal/prog-metal circles.

Another I've tried getting into and just could not get is Jethro Tull. Apart from TAAB and Aqualung, I've never really gotten into them. I tried really hard when I was first discovering prog over 15 years ago and dove into all the classic 70s prog bands and albums. Bands like Pink Floyd, Genesis, Yes, Kansas, and King Crimson all clicked with me right away, but Jethro Tull just never really clicked with me outside of those two albums. I tried, and even own several of their earlier albums, but nothing just really worked for me. Same goes for other classic 70s prog bands like Van Der Graaf Generator and Gentle Giant. You'd think my love for Spock's Beard might have helped me get into GG, but it just never happened, and with VdGG, I guess I just found some of the music and Peter Hammill's vocals to be a bit much to listen to at times.

One more I've tried, and kind of enjoy but just never really latched on to is Opeth, despite owning almost all of their albums (during a phase of my prog discovery where I bought a lot of albums by a lot of the more well-known, well-regarded bands). I recognize their talent and all, but maybe their music just never lined up with my tastes.

-Marc.

Marillion is the first one that comes to mind. Hearing all the praise from fellow DT fans, and even MP, I had to check them out, but despite my best efforts, they do absolutely nothing for me. To a lesser degree (because I haven't given them as much of a listen), I would add The Flower Kings, ELP, Zappa, Jethro Tull, and PG-era Genesis. And of course anything with Cookie Monster vocals is an automatic write off.
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
