What?!? That's a great album; the only song I don't care for is "The Zoo".

I like True Messenger better than Shine On, but both are solid, and anyone who's a fan of Rabin-era Yes should check them out.  The life in these songs dwarfs anything that the Steve Howe Band has put out in the last decade.

JA and the Geeks are playing at a venue kinda near me next Friday.  I'm struggling with really wanting to see the show and not wanting to drive 80 miles each way or dropping a bunch of money on a hotel.

On the Images & Words Discord, they do these "Listening Party's" and people can submit an album (1) for them for AOTY or Album of the Decade.

So they are taking submissions right now for the decade of 2000-2009. And for those who may be curious, here's a list of all the albums submitted so far

It might be interesting to see what a list around here might look like. I forget, but if we had an Album of the Decade thread back in late 2009/early 2010, what everyone's #1 record of the decade was, although that was 15 years ago, so there's a lot of people here now, who weren't here then, and of course tastes change, so the list might look different now anyway.

Going back to this - as noted above, I'd imagine there might be a "Favorites of 2000-09" thread somewhere on DTF...? If so, is there a way to unearth it? Not sure how easy it'd be to find it via the Search function, and the one existing "container" thread is for Top 50s and more recent song/album countdowns.

It would be fun to do a 2000-09 and a 2010-19...or even combined, maybe.

Search doesn't work as well as it used to, but if we did one for that decade it'd probably be with an outdated set of users.  We did this one a few years ago for each year.

It'd definitely be interesting to do a new one just for the decade of the 00s with the current batch of posters.

Edit:  Actually, search seems to be working better today.  There are a few threads I'm finding kind of like that.

Nice, thank you Litho! I'll comb through these. I know we had Soundscape's thread on the best by individual years too.

But it'd be nice to have a revisit of this century's decades so far.

Went with my wife to see Chris Thile the other night. I had seen some of his stuff on youtube. Fun folksy stuff. Turns out this was basically a one man mini-musical. His the dude and his mandolin and a few props. Told a 80 or so mininute musical story about moving to New York and falling in love with a weird bar and the story of that over the years. Insanely fun, compelling (I say this as a guy who doesn't drink or go to bars), immensely talented dude, very engaging and funny. Dude totally blew me away.

Would highly recomend Chris Thile to anyone who is more into modern folk/blugrassy style music. Dude also broke into a 5 or so minute Bach solo on his mandolin after the show since he felt it was too short.

Yeah, he's easily my favorite mandolinist, and just a generally incredible all-around musician who can do it all and seamlessly blends ideas from myriad genres into his playing.

I'm a fan of Nickel Creek but I kind of found Thile's other band Punch Brothers hard to listen to. Super talented guy though.

Doubtful.  He's right, and that list of mandolinists is legit.

I found Sierra Hull to be super fun to see live, and I got to meet her.  Totally bubbly and super nice.  I think she is playing the IBMA again this year, so hopefully I get to see her again.

BTW, modern progressive bluegrass musicians are just as skilled and virtuosic musicians as any popular rock/prog/metal musicians.  Just not as loud.

Indeed.

And I've seen her live as well.  My mandolin looked at me with contempt when I came home after.

This is perhaps not as relevant these days, but prog and metal fans used to place a premium on skilled (and often overt) musicianship and subverting commercialism, which bluegrass excels at, far more so than mainstream pop-country has, so it's interesting that it didn't appeal more to them.  But of course now values have changed a bit over the last couple decades (to the point that Taylor Swift can have a thread with thousands of replies, mostly positive, not that I have any problem with this).

No.  That's why I said BTW = By the way, which indicates bringing up something not previously addressed, but related.

Well, just supports my theory that the timeline goes "we like what we like" THEN we "backfill in why we like it", as opposed to vice versa.

It appears The Sword has reformed. I came upon them late and after they had stopped making rifftastic albums. No idea if they plan on making new music, but if they do I hope it in the vein of the first 3 or 4 records and not the last 2.

I still listen to those first 3 albums regularly.
