Is a movie "The Dark Knight" (2008) really THAT GREAT?
« on: January 03, 2021, 06:07:40 AM »
What would you say?
This 2008 movie about Batman is among the most celebrated and praised movies of the 21st century. Does this movie deserve it?

Yes. It's not perfect, but comes dangerously close to it.
I use my sig to pimp some bands from Italy! Check out Elvenking (Power / Folk metal), Folkstone (Rock / Medieval metal), Arcana Opera (Gothic/Noir/Heavy metal) and the beautiful voice of Elisa!

Yes but has too many characters. Nolan said in retrospect - Two face should have gotten his own film and I agree.

Plus I actually thought "...Rises" was a bit better.

I found Rises a lot more entertaining and less cluttered but I do love all three.

I think when I next get paid - i'll order the Dark Knight Trilogy on Blu Ray to top up my Chris Nolan collection.

So Far I have

The Prestige
Inception
Interstellar
Dunkirk
Tenet

I also need to get Momento - and i've actually never seen Insomnia !

As a movie, I prefer Begins, but it's damn hard to top Ledger's Joker.

Yes, overall a very good movie and Heath Ledger's performance is iconic.

Yes but has too many characters. Nolan said in retrospect - Two face should have gotten his own film and I agree.

Plus I actually thought "...Rises" was a bit better.

That's one thing I remember thinking when I first saw it, that Two Face came and went pretty quickly for being what considered (with my fairly limited Batman knowledge) to be a top-tier foe of Batman. I had expected that the movie would end with Harvy Dent's transformation into Two Face and he would be the main villain in movie three.

I thought something similar.  He IS a top-tier villain; the old Batcave in the comics had a huge coin reflecting that, if I'm not mistaken.

Nope, out of respect for Heath Ledger the Joker isn't mentioned or alluded at all.

Apparently, if Ledger had lived he was going to be the judge in the kangaroo court instead of scarecrow.

The association of the Batcave coin with Two-Face was a later retcon.  It was originally from a Golden Age encounter with the Penny Plunderer.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Eh, Ledger is too over the top for me. Like someone that crazy could intricately maneuver multiple events is way out of the realm of possibility. It’s like he becomes superhuman and indestructible or something.

Yeah, that's the major flaw of the movie - a self appointed agent of chaos, a dog that chases cars and wouldn't know what to do with it if he got one, that has a god-like plan prepared for every possible outcome.

I didn’t see an issue. Being an agent of chaos doesn’t mean having no plan, it’s trying to cause chaos. And the dog line I always saw as a lie to Harvey to mislead him.

I disagree.  Ledger was steeped in realism.  At the movie goes on, his makeup runs, his hair becomes greasy, less green, you can see the madness in his progression.  I love that he has ticks, lies, believes those lies and truly believes that he is Batman's kindred spirit.

Memento is probably my #1 Nolan film. It isn't his best, just my personal favorite.

On topic, yes it is a great film. Any flaws or shortcomings are minor and not worth pointing out, except possibly:

Eh, Ledger is too over the top for me. Like someone that crazy could intricately maneuver multiple events is way out of the realm of possibility. It’s like he becomes superhuman and indestructible or something.

It isn't a matter of whether a "crazy" person could do everything he did. It's that anyone could do everything he did. It didn't detract from my enjoyment of the film, but there were a couple "now, wait a minute..." moments for me.
