The Bet
« on: December 23, 2020, 12:09:55 PM »
So I'll start by saying I voted for Trump. But I'm not one of those people who lives and dies with politics and obsesses over it 24/7. I simply believed Trump was a better option for me than Biden.

Now to the bet...

My niece who is 38 years old and obsessed with Trump and the results of the election. She and several other relatives on my Facebook are 100% positive the results with be overturned and Trump will remain president for 4 more years. She says, "I'm 100% positive! Not a doubt in my mind. I'd better my life on it!"

So I started to rip on her a bit saying joining a cult never ends well, but I'm sure Linus will save you a spot in the Trumpkin patch as you sit and await the bombshell results that are coming.

She got pissed and continued to rant on about it. At that point I said, look since you are so convinced lets make a bet. A steak and Alaskan king crap legs dinner for 4. I'll cook the meal, loser buys the groceries.
So of coarse she takes the bet.
A day later she texts me saying "I don't want to hold you to such an expensive dinner. If you want to back out we can just get together for a normal dinner.
I said to her, I will absolutely fork up the 200 bucks or whatever if I'm wrong. She then says..."Ok I'm excited! Were on!"

Now part of me almost feels guilty about all this. Almost...

She needs to understand not to be sucked into the delusional cult of Trump. It really is a cult! Even though I voted for him I can't take the insanity anymore...

Here's what I think will happen moving forward...
Trump will be dragged out of the White House kicking and screaming on January 20th. He will be escorted into a vehicle at at that point he will look at the drive and say...
"To Fox News, James! and step on it!"

He will then proceed to sit on his Fox throne and become the unofficial president of the United States to his loyal following for the next 4 years. I even believe he will still hold large rallies that will be greatly attended.

I am looking forward to winning the biggest sucker bet I've ever made in my lifetime and a killer dinner because I'll be cooking it! :tick2:

200$ for a dinner is what she will lose?

Well, she could have get scammed by Trump himself and his "election defense" fund, whose blink-and-you'll-miss-them small notes state that only donation bigger than 8000$ will go to that fund and he eats the rest, at least this way the money stays in the family!

I’m not so sure?

But pertaining to gambling I have always said...

The thrill of winning money does not equal the agony of losing it.

Therefore I have never been much of a gambler. But my niece needs to learn a lesson on this one that goes beyond a steak and king crab legs dinner.

You'll win the bet, but whether or not you collect is a different matter.

What I disagree with is him being dragged out kicking and screaming. As much as we'd all love to see that, fuck, even Stadler would get a kick out of that, he won't give us the satisfaction. Of course I'm praying for an armed standoff, but that's even less likely. The most likely possibility is that he leaves to play golf on Sunday and just never comes back. What I'm sure of is that he'll prevent any possibility of a Nixon boarding Marine 1 type of photo-op. Maybe he slinks out in the middle of the night early Tuesday morning, or maybe he does what my boss does. "I'm going to run an errand, I'll be back around 2," and he just doesn't come back. He'll definitely slip out unnoticed.

Oh trust me she will honor this bet. I also told her she had to agree with a "No excuses" clause.
No matter what the reason she's wrong about Trump not remaining president won't matter to me. So I won't allow any...
"well the dems did this so..."
"well if his party didn't turn on him...."
I said I'm not going to care. She agreed that if in the slimmest of chances she's wrong she won't make any excuses.

I have not spoken to her. I will not reach out to her. From all I see on Facebook from her she is still believing “the truth will be revealed!”
She goes on and on but sadly she and many others still even now believe Trump will remain the president.
I have nothing to say to that. Honestly at this point I don’t want the dinner. I worry about her mental state. Same with her mother.

I have family members that are also like that.  It's sad.  My wife and I have unfriended or unfollowed a number of our family members on Facebook over the last few months.  One of those "unfriendings" resulted in us being pushed out of her dad's side of the family.  They want nothing to do with us because we don't like Trump.

My own cousin went on some giant diatribe to my wife and I about how Joe Biden has dementia - all while knowing that my mom is showing signs of the disease.  I still feel so insulted about that - people have lost all of their decorum because of the way Trump think it's ok to speak about people, and they emulate him.  Don't come to me and insinuate that Biden has dementia (he doesn't) when I've watched three close family members all suffer from the disease, and my own mom is starting to battle it.  I'm pretty sure Joe can tell you what day of the week it is.  My mom can't.

You're certainly not alone in experiencing how families can be divided because of this political stuff.

Damn Grappler... that's awful.  It's a shame that people can let shit like this truly affect friendships and relationships.  I do truly believe it's a cult mentality, and being POTUS with 90M twitter followers, Trump was in the position to be the most prolific cult leader in the history of ever.  Behaviour like this is the kind of things you hear about Scientology.

And Trump is.... well, Trump. His arrogance, his egoistical narcissism were there for all to see. And still people fell for him like a cult leader, like you said. If people can't see behind Trump's very thin facade, how will they see through a much smarter and less "in your face" version of Trump? what if the political equivalent of Ted Bundy will arise, as in someone so charismastic and suave-looking that you could never guess the monster lurking below until it's too late?

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — A friendly $100 wager over the 2020 Presidential election has landed in a Florida small claims court.

Before the election, Sean Hynes, a Trump supporter from St. Petersburg, reached out to Jeffrey Costa, an acquaintance who is a Biden supporter from Atlanta. The deal was sealed on Facebook Messenger: If Trump won, Costa would pay $100. If Biden won, Hynes would pay up.

But once the votes were counted, Hynes refused to acknowledge the Democrat’s victory, even after recounts, the Supreme Court’s rejection of court challenges and the Electoral College’s confirmation, the Tampa Bay Times reported.

Costa, 50, decided to sue. He’s seeking the $100, plus $250 in court costs and $300 in interest on the unpaid bet. He’s representing himself in the action, filed Dec. 28 in Pinellas County small claims court.

“You should have the integrity in your principles to follow through with what you have proposed,” Costa told the newspaper.

I've been thinking about this general topic for a while, and for me, it's been helpful to sort of flip the viewfinder a bit.  Instead of looking at it as "what will people fall for or be deluded by" - because by definition the "better" version will be harder to dismiss as "delusion" - it's helped me a bit to look at it as "how desperate might one become to be heard".  We all celebrate - when it's convenient, of course - the "right" (in quotes because it's not a right, on any level) to be heard.   We talk a lot about the importance of being heard.   Independent of any subjective observation whether that message is worthy or not, how badly does that person want to be heard?  Are they willing to take a chance on a carnival barker or shaman to get their point of view across?  In terms of the voice, in terms of changing the tenor of the dialogue, I see little difference between Trump and other candidates that have made national splashes over the last 4 to 8 years.  And at least this viewpoint doesn't as a baseline assumption require us to dismiss fully a third of the voting population as "unhinged" or morally decrepit.

I'm guessing that if the Trumptard objects based on the enforcability of the "contract" he may have a chance, though from what I can tell bar bets are often legally binding. He won't do that, though. He'll go to court and object on the basis that Trump won and wind up paying his former buddy. Also, $250 is pretty steep for filing in small claims court. Over here it's about forty bucks. My boss will sue somebody for $41.  :lol

No, you're right.  Here in CT, small claims is $95 plus $50 for service of claim (which you can do yourself with certified mail, return receipt requested).   If you win, it's automatically added to the judgment.

But there's shenanigans, tom-foolery and malarky going on.  I googled Florida, and it's $80 for a claim of that size, plus service fees ($40, it looks like).  The fee schedule for Dade County (Miami) is clearer than that for Pinellas County, but they look the same generally.  And that interest rate is usury (that's roughly 1200% per annum with no compounding.)    :)

So this is the update of what happened shortly after 1/20...
It starts with me making a post that illustrates my typical snide sense of humor.

And back to crack addict again...

Niece - Uncle Rich Lenotti I really hope nobody goes around throwing your past mistakes in your face. How sad and cruel that would be!

Me - You really want to go there with me right now? You think that’s fair? As they say...
Don’t poke the bear.
You have said absolutely nothing to me this past few weeks about your bold and wrong predictions. Not on the 6th. Not yesterday. Not ever. But this is what I get? A lesson in how to be respectful? Remember...”I’m 100% positive Trump will remain in office for the next 4 years! You’ll see”
100%... not 80% not 90%.
Remember...
“I’d bet my life on it”? Glad that wasn’t a thing...
Had things gone differently I’m quite “100%”positive your silence would have not have been so. Want to argue that point?
I have not been mean. I have not said a single word to you about it. You don’t think that bothers me you were not big enough to reach out to me? You know full well I would have if it was the other way around. And now you make more guaranteed proclamations that won’t ever come to fruition. Keep going, enjoy.
While still not reaching to me about what I told you would be the harsh reality you refused to accept.
You spew plenty of stuff every day I pretty sure God would rebuke you for?
As the Bible says, before you judge me, “take the plank out of your own eye”
I love you Stacy and that’s why I said nothing. But make no mistake you are allowed to have your feelings but I am allowed to have mine.

Niece - I AM 100% positive TRUMP WILL GET A SECOND TERM! Like I’ve been saying this whole time! And YOU and the rest of the nonbelievers will see! And I don’t give two shits about that stupid bet!

And there you have it. And Bart, you were right when you said I likely would not collect on this wager. My niece is unhinged and sadly there are millions just like her...

And to update everyone on what's going to happen...

Apparently the "truth" comes out on March 4th and Biden is removed and Trump in back in town!

And when that doesn't happen I'm sure a new date will be installed to keep the delusion alive and well.

Apocalypse doomsday cult but dressed in politics. Simple as that. It's a cult, and people are being radicalized into it by the stuff they read online in their echo chamber.

You're 100% right that come March 4th they will have another excuse for when nothing absolutely happens.

Yeah, I was reading yesterday how Q people were latching on to some sovereign citizen conspiracy theory that the USA was actually changed from a country to a corporation back in 1871 and somehow this now ends with Trump inaugurated as the 19th POTUS on March 4th.
Photobucket sucks.

I read this stuff and I feel like I live in an alternate reality.

I wish COVID was gone; I used to travel a fair amount for work, and I would usually make some off-hours time to sit in a bar and get the pulse of the people.  Florida, Missouri, Georgia, New York...   and in one-on-one conversations it was almost ALWAYS more measured than the memes and tweets imply.   Like any conversation that isn't on TV or in a court room, there was give and take, there were seasonings - sarcasm, hyperbole, self-deprecation - to the point that tempered even the most outrageous of claims.  Granted, I don't visit any of the more partisan sites - on either side - but the only time I ever hear of this more wacky stuff is here, or on the more mainstream liberal news sites.  That's a red flag for me about the extent and veracity of these claims.

I also wish I had a better understanding of the numbers of people that ACTUALLY believe these more egregious claims (i.e. the 1871 corporation theory; disprovable in about 12 minutes with an internet connection and an internet browser).  It's easy to say "millions!" - even Trump did that on his inauguration day - but who REALLY are we talking about?

It's just as easy to say it's NOT "millions".  No snark here Bill, but what evidence are you aware of that it ISN'T measured in the millions.  For my perspective, statistical probabilities I suppose would suggest the number isn't inconsequential.  Add up the numbers of peoples that have rabidly followed his rallies in the last 4 years, the number of Parler subscribers, the number of viewers to the Fox News conspiracy pushers, the OANN, etc... Take some reasonable portion of those that voted for Trump, and voila, that's where my mind justifies the reference to "millions" - somewhere between 1 person, and 9,999,999 persons.
Fox = drip-feeding dumb people with rage-porn. CNN = drip-feeding smug assholes with moral reassurance.
I'll do my best, but this? The guy's getting Llamathrust.
