The purpose of a roulette is to introduce the person to a stunning array of new music and change their life forever. Brag about winning, if you won. Sulk about losing, if you lost.

However.

My list of artists to check out is easily a few hundred artists long. Plus all the new albums coming out every year. Plus when there's a global pandemic and I have to make sure to listen to my comforting oldies for months on repeat. Plus, unlike probably most of this forum, I do a fair amount of non-album listening (more on that later). Whatever you're sending to me, I've probably already heard of it and it's probably on my "to check out, eventually"-list if it's the kind of music I like. Dodging a ban list for that kind of roulette would be kind of impossible - not that this one will be super easy.

HOWEVER.

The process and the ritual of sharing music is quite lovely, and one of the things that gives me those happy feelings is when someone recognizes they really like a singer I really like. There are other elements of music I find really important, but this one is the most democratic to have for a roulette theme, much better than if I told you to give me stuff with lyrics you like or guitar solos you like.

Important roulette details: I'm taking up to 14 people, and if you already signed up in the tracker thread, confirm you're signing up in this one as well. I will be judging SONGS, not singers, so you can be adventurous and you don't have to send commercially palatable voices or technically impressive voices or anything like that. Just a singer you like, that's it. Spotify is fine, Youtube is fine. Live versions are fine, demo versions are fine. You can send up to three songs by a single artist in a single round, but if you think one song is a perfect ten, you can send just the one. No limitations in length, but if you all go crazy at once, rounds will be late. I don't plan on taking more than ten days per round, and will be shooting for one week per round. If a round isn't crazy in length and I'm not too busy and it runs late, I'll give you my address and you can mail me a box of glitter I'll be obliged to open on camera. I don't have a vacuum cleaner, so that should be fun. Shooting for five rounds, but if we have fun I can always add more. You can drop out at any time. You can send me all your songs at any time as well. If my inbox is full, I'm sorry, I have a lot of messages saved from DTF friends yikes I will clean out after each submission so it should be fine.

Taste details: I like anything with a nice melody and some cool piano/synthy sounds. Obviously I'm really into metal, and this is the one roulette per year where "someone with a voice you like" can also be a black metal or death metal vocalist. I've listened to just about anything from indie folk to techy death, so I don't feel like guiding you too much, but again, all my favorite metal genres have keyboards in them.

Ban list: I added all the artists for which I'm sure I've heard more than half of all their stuff. So lots of "big artists" are missing. But again, I do a lot of non-album listening, so I'll do you a favor and skip adding all the artists I have kinda sorta listened to, and you do me a favor and skip their top five greatest hits, if it's a big metal or rock or pop or goth or prog artist. I'm sure I forgot something, because I just took my old one and added artists newer to me by memory, but if I skipped anything and you send it to me, that's on me and not on you.

On one hand, I kinda want to avoid some obvious choices because I'm sure you've heard something from them (where's Avantasia, Blind Guardian, or Epica?), on the other hand, it's difficult to go really obscure when these bands are available.

Everything that's not on there is fair game because it's just in the realm of sporadic non-album listening feel free to share any of those with me. I think the only Epica song I recognize is White Waters, I haven't put on a BG album in about 15 years and Avantasia was even sent to me in my first roulette but I never went beyond that.

Yup. That's my safeguard against receiving 20 minute drone/post rock instrumentals with no discernible vocals TBH I don't really listen to instrumental music.

Do you like rap / hip hop music? Asking for a friend.

Not that I know of. The GTA rap station is nice, so maybe I like rap from the 80's?
