It'll be a shame if 425 gives up on PoS before listening to Remedy Lane.
So, look, here's the thing.
I've heard a number of songs. None of them have done that much for me. I've gotten two in roulette—Undertow and Handful of Nothing, both of which I liked decently well at the time, but which made absolutely no long-term impression on me.
From what I'm familiar with, which is limited, I don't really like Gildenlöw's lyrics. From what I can glean, his worldview really clashes with mine in a way that I tend to find offputting.
Generally, they seem to belong to that more naturalistic side of prog metal, like Porcupine Tree and Tool, that I've always struggled with to a certain degree. (Wilson's just so good a songwriter and has a worldview that is at least friendly enough to mine—though still very different—that I'm able to enjoy a certain section of his output—mainly the last five PT albums, the Raven album, and a smattering of other songs.)
I'm saying this all not having listened to
The Perfect Element yet. I wouldn't say this much if I'd already listened to the submission, and once I listen to it tomorrow, I'll shut up about Pain of Salvation until I'm ready to give results. Maybe this album will turn me around, like a
Deadwing-quality album might have turned me around on Porcupine Tree.
But that's where I'm coming from and where I sit with this band. Maybe that gives some insight into my attitude that this is the last real chance for them—there's a history here; this isn't just one-and-done. If I end up really mehing this hard, I won't ban them, and someone can take the big risk on
Remedy Lane or whatever other one they think will sell me.
Maybe this post, along with my eventual reaction to
The Perfect Element, will also give more general insight into my tastes, which might help folks decide on later submissions.
