Found out with this thread. Bummer. He was 90, there's only so much "despair" you can have for someone dying that old, but in this 2020 we need every little good news we can get and this is definitively NOT good news.

His legendary status won't certainly be disputed.

EDIT: the BBC says "Sir Sean died overnight in his sleep, while in the Bahamas. It is understood he had been unwell for some time."

Dying in your sleep while at the Bahamas, aged 90. And THAT'S how James Bond leaves the stage  :hat

Sean Connery turned down the role of Gandalf because he “didn’t understand the part”.

I’ll let it slide because he was awesome.  RIP.

And to make up for it he went for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen which bombed and remains his last movie role. Meh!

Just put a thread in the Movies subforum. Didn't look here first.

What I posted over there...

My first experience with Bond was Roger Moore. I had seen a couple of his films before my mom told me I needed to go back and watch the "real" James Bond. I liked them, but they seemed dated to my teenage mind. I don't know how much not seeing them in real time, or being spoiled by 80s action films, informed that opinion. Over time I grew to appreciate the Connery films, even if they are a bit silly at times. And I never thought that was Connery's best work. I always thought he got better as he aged, and preferred his later work. When I think about him, I actually think of Henry Jones, Sr. To me that is the quintessential Connery role.

I could see his face and hear his voice while I read that!   :tup :tup  And thanks for the 'Jeopardy' reminder.  There were occasional moments, but the shtick did get old.

Roger Moore was Bond to me as well due to the times.  Then I slowly checked out the original.  Debonair, and oozing with class....as Bond and every set he stepped on afterwards.  And, as a Queen fan, a few songs and his appearance made 'Highlander' bearable.

Roger Moore was my favorite but that's because I grew up in his era of JB. I really enjoyed Pierce Brosnan's version of JB but I would LOVE to see George Clooney as JB! It may be too late in life though.

I can count the number of movies that are better than the book on one hand - The Godfather, Dr. Zhivago, and The Hunt For Red October.     Scotsman as Russian sub captain.  Perfect.  No, seriously, it was perfect.   Love him as Bond, too.  I like the newer Bonds, too, but as someone who has read all the Fleming books*, they always "felt" 60's to me, and that was Connery.

* Lie; all but two; I'm reading You Only Live Twice now, and have just The Man With The Golden Gun to go.

I remember watching James Bond films religiously when I was a kid. In hindsight, I was probably a bit too young, but kids will watch what they want to watch. It feels very strange and sad whenever one of my childhood heroes passes away. This one is especially bittersweet... Dude lived a great life, by all accounts. He feels like one of those people who will live on forever in his work, like he'll never be truly gone. RIP Sean Connery.

I had company over Sat night and we were running down his movies, and I was surprised by how many movies I've seen him in. He might well be the actor I've seen the most times.

The Longest Day
7 Bond movies
The Anderson Tapes
Murder on the Orient Express
A Bridge Too Far (hated it)
Outland
Time Bandits (don't remember a thing about it)
The Untouchables
The Presidio (don't remember a thing about it)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Hunt for Red October
The Rock

Looks like 18 movies I've seen him in. Not sure who would rival that. Probably B actors from old movies, like Martin Balsam or Ernest Borgnine.

Not The Highlander!?! :omg:  What about League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

Wasn't Presidio with Mark Harmon?  I vaguely recall that one.  I recall seeing Medicine Man as well.  I'm sure I saw Rising Sun and First Knight too.

I liked Roger Moore as 007 better.  Connery's best performance to me is still the one that won him an Oscar. The movie itself was pure cheese, but his work in it was really amazing.
