But is it objectively weaker than the rest?

Of course not. I can't imagine Freewill being weaker than Different Strings and Entre Nous.

Why?

Now this is a good question!

Also Red Barchetta.

I think Red Barchetta is a fantastic song. I also think Freewill is one of Rush's most overrated songs.

This, but reversed. I mean, Red Barchetta is good, but not that good.

I’m not a car guy by any stretch. But the car in Red Barchetta is really a McGuffin to me anyway. To me the song is more about freedom.

I love Freewill, but RB is the better song for many of the reasons stated.
"Better the pride that resides in a citizen of the world.
Than the pride that divides when a colorful rag is unfurled." - Neil Peart

Freewill is musically a much richer and more interesting song than DS and EN, there is a lot more going on in Freewill (section with intertwining of bass and guitar solo is extraordinary).
Different Strings is the weakest link on PeW. It's not a bad song, but it's nothing more than decent ordinary Rush ballad.

Is Different Strings objectively the weakest link on PeW? Is Freewill better than Limelight? Why or why not?

Philosophically, I prefer Freewill, but, musically, I pick Red Barchetta.

I think it's absolutely  stupid to call any song weaker than another song on any album from any one group without explaining why. BUT - if you don't like a song that's OK but realize there are some songs that are your trash that are someone else's treasure. Sheez... :\

Not sure if this is directed at me. But as I said, I like Freewill. Truthfully PW doesn't have a dud on it. It's one of my all time favorite Rush albums and I think it's super consistent and solid, so I think Freewill being among my least favorite tracks on that album speaks more to how good the album itself is.

I don't even think I have any specific issues with Freewill. Maybe it's a bit by the book? Even that's a stretch. I just think most of the rest of PW has a little more to offer.

The funny thing is, PeW doesn't suck.  There are no "duds" on it, and it IS very consistent.  Consistently a 7 for me.  There's no song on PeW that makes me forget what I'm doing and start air-drumming (Tom Sawyer; La Villa Strangiato), there's no song that gives me goose bumps (The Camera Eye, La Villa Strangiato), there's no song that makes me hit repeat and listen to that sumnabitch again and again (Subdivisions, La Villa Strangiato).  It's a very good album by a very good band.   Of the songs on that record, I rate them:

Jacob's Ladders
Different Strings
Entre Nous
Natural Science
Freewill
Spirit Of Radio
The Spirit Of The Radio

Well, it could be because Red Barchetta is on the best selling Rush album of all time.  Not only that, it's one of their best songs.  RB is easily the definitive choice without taking anything away from Freewill.

Red Barchetta. I just love the storytelling of it, in words and music. Nothing wrong with Freewill - it's a great song.

It's an excellent song. My favorite song from Huey Lewis and The News.

Off the top of my head, my favorite Rush songs...

- Marathon, Grand Designs, The Big Money, Manhattan Project, Territories, Mystic Rhythms
- Hemispheres, The Trees, Circumstances
- Finding My Way, Working Man
- Anthem, Fly By Night
- Lakeside Park, Bastille Day, The Necromancer
- A Passage to Bangkok, Something For Nothing
- Freewill, The Spirit of Radio
- Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Limelight
- Subdivisions, The Weapon
- The Body Electric, Kid Gloves
- Time Stand Still
- The Pass
- Dreamline, Bravado, Face Up
- Animate, Alien Shore, Double Agent, Cold Fire
- One Little Victory
- Far Cry
- Headlong Flight, The Garden

Okay so that's 40, if I looked at the albums proper I could definitely fill out the other 10. And I know I'll get shit for Kid Gloves, The Body Electric, and some others making the list but not, say, 2112, or a single song from AFTK
